Nykyisin useimmat videotiedostot saa toistettua ilman koodekkien jahtaamista ja etsimistä. Netissä on kaikenlaisia koodekkipaketteja, joiden asentamista kannattaa kuitenkin välttää. Valtaosan videoista saa näkyviin ffdshow-ohjelmalla. Kyseessä on DirectShow- ja VFW-koodekki, joka toistaa muun muassa DivX-, XviD-, wmv-, H.263-, MPEG-1- ja MPEG-2-videoita. Ohjelmassa on tuki monelle tekstitysvaihtoehdolle ja se toimii sujuvasti myös hieman vanhemmissa tietokoneissa.
