WHAT IS CHIRALITY?

Chirality is a "one-switch" game of reflexes and
perception. It is written in Java and is freeware.
The game may be played and distributed freely,
providing it is not modifying and all files are
intact. It is not open source and may not be
disassembled or its code used to make other
games. It may not be distributed with altered
credits or content. It may not be sold, or
included in any compilation which is sold.
Only the original author's written permission
can override these restrictions.

LAUNCHING CHIRALITY

Launch Chirality using one of the appropriate scripts.
Scripts ending in ".bat" are for use on Windows OS,
and ".sh" are for Unix/Linux/Mac.

There are alternate scripts that control the sound
options. Here is what each does:

Chirality-Music : Launch game with music
Chirality-Voice : Launch game with vocals
Chirality-Quiet : Launch game with no sounds
Chirality : Launch game with all sounds

You can also launch the game from a command prompt
with this command:

java -Xms96m -Xmx96m -jar chirality.jar

You can specify the sound options as well with these
extra command arguments:

java -Xms96m -Xmx96m -jar chirality.jar music
java -Xms96m -Xmx96m -jar chirality.jar voice
java -Xms96m -Xmx96m -jar chirality.jar quiet

HOW TO PLAY

Control of the game is done with the "one switch"
philosphy. Everything is accomplished with a single
control. You may use the SPACEBAR or the LEFT MOUSE
BUTTON to control the game.

Chirality starts with a title screen. Credits and
high scores are displayed in the center area.

There are three main menu choices:

Start Game - Takes you to the game selection menu.
Panic Mode/Peace Mode - Press the control to toggle.
Panic Mode is the default game, and gets very fast.
Peace Mode runs at half the speed of Panic Mode.
Exit Game - Quits Chirality

The Game Selection menu cycles through four choices:
three different modes of play which have more
"vanes" to match and which are increasingly
tougher, and the exit command.

Once you select a play mode, the game will begin.

There will be two sets of "vanes" in the play area.
These look somewhat like fans rotating. There is a
white set of vanes rotating in one direction, and a
blue set rotating in the other direction. On both sets
of vanes are yellow symbols. There are six different
symbols in all.

As the vanes rotate they will eventually overlap each
other. (The center of the vanes lights up with a grey
light when the overlap happens, in case you are not sure
exactly when an overlap begins and ends.) When the vanes
are overlapping you must press the button, but ONLY if
the symbols match on one or more pairs of overlapping vanes.
If no symbols match, then do NOT press the button.

So for example, if two vanes overlap and both have the plus (+)
symbol on them, then you would press the button. But if one vane
has the plus and the other has the bars (=), and none of the
other vane pairs match either, then don't press the button.

If you hit the button when a match overlap is happening, you score
one point for each matching pair. The matching symbols turn green
and fly off the vanes, and new symbols zoom in to replace them.
If there is a match and you don't press the button before the
overlap ends, the match pairs turn red and disappear. They are
also replaced by new symbols, but you don't score any points for
them, AND you lose one "try". If you press the button when there
is no match, you also lose one try.

You start each game with five tries, which are shown at the bottom
of the game screen as blue circles. Lose all five and the game is over.

There are three different play levels in this game, each of which is
harder than the previous one. The levels of play are:

Easy (The Dragonfly) - Each fan has only two vanes, and play starts off
slowly. This is a good level for learning the game, though even this
level can get fast once your score gets high.

Medium (The Orchid) - Each fan has three vanes. This is trickier, as
there are more symbols and overlaps come quicker. You need steady
concentration to master this one at the highest speed.

Hard (The Windmill) - Each fan as four vanes. This is the hardest level,
and it can get very difficult even at the lower speeds. You will need
to watch constantly and react with split-second decisions to earn a high
score on this level.

If at the end of a game you earn a high score, you will get a chance to
enter your initials. Simply press the button as each letter lights up
inside the pointers, and after you enter all three letters you score
and initials will be saved. Next time the title screen appears, it will
be your high score on show for all to see!

On the Game Over screen you can choose from three choices:

Play Again - Play another game of the same difficulty as your previous game.
Go To Menu - Return to the main menu, where you can change settings or choose
             another game style.
Exit Game - Quit Chirality

That's it! I hope you enjoy this game, and please visit Dream Codex for
more freeware entertainment!
