=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Tue Jun 22 21:50:32 1999

        *** lluvia has joined #demojournal

        <lluvia> hie

<|ps|> halo! so first the normal question, what is a fish?

<lluvia> could have done that in query too, no? hum:)
                 what is that question?? :)

<|ps|> its the normal question everyone asks another one on a
demoscene interview. what is a fish?
i see you havent been reading many interviews lately :P
nah im just fooling around, so who are you lluvia?

<lluvia> a fish is something we hang on the back of somebody else on
                 the first april :)

        <lluvia> ohhhh wait 3 seconds..
                 back
sorry. the cat was doing some stupidities :)

        <|ps|> which one? :P
so can we know who are you now? :)

<lluvia> actually both, coz when one starts fooling around, the
other follows:) ok, who I am :)
well, I am a person, called Anne (yeah that's a female
name, you got it), living in Paris, France, and born
                 something like 21 years ago...

<|ps|> uuuuhhhhhh 8) and so, what do you do on this scene of ours? :)

<lluvia> I'm putting together some nasty sounds to make a very
particular noise that we call music:) No, ok, I'm musician!

<|ps|> for how long have you been in the scene?

<lluvia> for about two years (yes I'm a newbie, I know)

<|ps|> how did you discover the scene?

        <lluvia> When I met my boyfriend, Yes (webmaster of Orange Juice);
I must admit that I had never heard anything about the
scene before. I just stepped in the scene to see what it
was, and well, once you enter, you can't go out!

<|ps|> hehe :) so what do you think about it now that you are
               defintly in? :)

<lluvia> I think I still can't exactly define what it is, since I'm
very new in this; and I guess it's not the same thing for
those who are in there since ten years... but I think that
it is a very cool way to meet people from everywhere, and
to meet other musicians who have the same passion as me!
There are really few trackers in that strange thing that
                 we call "real life" :)

<|ps|> lets talk about that, did you ever had the idea about
tracking or doing music in some other form before you came
               upon the scene?

<lluvia> yes, sure, I make music since I was born, more or less!
I learned many instruments, and stopped after some years,
because what I wanted to do was composing, not playing
other people's compositions... of course the musical
knowledge helps me a lot; but I've always composed my own
music, even when I was 6 (I still have tapes, ok, it sucked,
but well:)) From the age of 8 I started to make music with
midi synths, and I stopped midi two years ago, cause my
sequencer crashed, and I had no money to buy another one,
and no computer. I met Chris (my boyfriend, that's right)
just after this, and I jumped on Fasttracker cause I was
really missing music... and well, here I am

<|ps|> oki :) boy, you sure type alot.. :) girl i mean..

<lluvia> (I answer to the question:)) hehe

<|ps|> so why do you like fastracker over impulse tracker?

<lluvia> I never tried impulse, I must say that the interface is not
very hum... friendly for a poor person not used to
computers, like I was :) I need interfaces more
                 "instinctive", you know
But I should try now, cause it seems that we can do
                 more with impulse tracker

<|ps|> how is it like to be a girl in the scene?

<lluvia> here we come:) Well, at the beginning it is a bit strange,
cause you're not used to see so few girls anywhere else...
and many guys are REALLY persuaded that you girl CAN'T be
as good as them, that you are certainly here because your
boyfriend took you with him, that's all... but with the
time, they get used to the fact that I'm not "the
girlfriend of ..." but that I am me. Don't laugh, it's very
important, cause now most people listen to my music as
MY music, and not as "the music of a girl".

<|ps|> humm. i understand your point. why do you think so little
               girls are "into" demoscene then?

<lluvia> demoscene is directly connected to computers, and there
are not many girls using computers in general. That's not
because of any ability or anything like that (computers
have really nothing difficult), that's only a lack of
interest, a cultural problem... you don't buy a computer
to your little girl, but much more to your male son; we are
just raised like that... but I think thing will change.

        Session Close: Tue Jun 22 23:06:17 1999

        Session Start: Sun Jul 25 12:33:45 1999

<|ps|> what was the first party you ever attended? :)

<lluvia> Wired 97 I didn't know many people then! Just maybe ten
persons... it was a bit boring, but I met many new people

<|ps|> what was the best and worst aspects of it then?

<lluvia> the worst, well, the fact that it was very hot, that
everybody was just stuck to their computer during three
days, without going outside, eating anything at any moment,
                 and well.. stinking:))
the good side was the demo projection, it was worth it, I
liked the GMF demo (genocyd), and the atmosphere was
good... and the fact that I met several nice people too!

<|ps|> what was the best party you ever attended?

        <lluvia> LTP2 :)

        <|ps|> why? :)

<lluvia> even if I was in the organizing team:) no, I really think
it was a great party, the atmosphere was really nice,
people seemed to be very happy, and there were many many
interresting people, and almost no gamers (I think I hate
parties with too many gamers, they are just lame ppl)

<|ps|> ok, are you ready for demojournals top quizshow contest?

        <lluvia> yes:)

<|ps|> 1. whats the capital of madagascar?

<lluvia> Antananativo wow typed it wrong
                 Antananarivo

<|ps|> 2. whats your favorite color?

<lluvia> (hum, I dunno how it's called in english, wait)
well, it's not in my dictionary...
in french it's turquoise (you know, that colour between
                 green and blue)

<|ps|> great! she knows the capital of madagascar but doesnt know
whats her favorite color in english :P
well.. anyways... 3. how much wood would a wood-cutter cut
if a wood-cutter would cut wood?

<lluvia> a wood cutter could cut as much wood as a wood cutter could
cut if a wood cutter could cut wood

<|ps|> 4. what is the name and height of the tallest mountain on
               earth?

        <lluvia> Mount Everest, 8880 m

<|ps|> 5. whats the perimeter of the earth messured around the
               equatorian line?

<lluvia> hum I have no idea:)
maybe 350 000 km or something like that?

<|ps|> how do you know the capital of madagascar? :)

<lluvia> well, I know it, dunno how:)

<|ps|> no one takes the time to go look the name of the capital
               of madagascar

<lluvia> I guess I've learned it once, I remember it, dunno why:)

<|ps|> and you dont remember when you remembered it?

<lluvia> well, do you remember when you learned the capital of
France was Paris? I dunno, I just know it:)

<|ps|> well.. no. but madagascar isnt just like as popular as
               france now is it? :P

<lluvia> yeah I know, it was just to say, I don't remember from
where I know it:) you know that in madagascar they speak
french, it was a french colony, maybe that's why we learned
                 it at school, I dunno

<|ps|> since your such a smart girl i have an extra question!
               6. where and what were you doing on the 13th january 1995?

        <lluvia> don't move
                 it was a friday

<|ps|> :P i cant believe you recall it... what were you doing
specifically? :) at 12:00 lets say

<lluvia> I was at boarding school , at highschool in Strasbourg,
I spent the evening playing cards with my friend Tanja
well, it was during school time, so at 12:00 I was eating,
                 before going back to class

<|ps|> really?!?!?! :P arent you making this up? :P

        <lluvia> (no, I use to write a diary from 91 since 95:))))
I just looked in it:) it's here beside me:)

        [editor: CHEATER!!!]

<|ps|> anne: so this is what diaries are for!!! wow :)

<lluvia> well I was very crazy about it, I wrote everyting...
everyday I wrote what I did, and the day you choose was
not very interresting though, there are only a few lines:)

<|ps|> well... just for curiosity.. what were you doing the same
               day in 92? :)

<lluvia> hum wait:) I was in Germany for a month, and the 13rd
january, after the class I went for a walk with my french
friend Sophie , and then we went to my german friend
Maren's and played scrabble and we had a big discussion
about nazism:) (coz our german friends were very active
                 against that)

        <|ps|> wow! :) this is freaky! :)

        <lluvia> hehe I got you:)))

<|ps|> well.. lets move on! :) what is your favorite demo? :)

<lluvia> my favorite demo, wow this question is more difficult:))

        <|ps|> HAHA!!! NOW I GOT YOU!!! :)

        * |ps| only doesnt get how you can get all questions right and dont
know the word for torquoise in english :P

        <lluvia> hehe:)
well, there are many, I don't know if I really have ONE
favorite... usually I like the demos who have kinda story,
or something that makes a sense and linkes the parts
together. I don't like just 3D objects turning with a
                 background, well you see

        <|ps|> so, say names! :)

<lluvia> well, it's difficult, coz I never think about the demos I
like in this kind of question, names just don't come

<|ps|> ok.. moving on.. :) what are your favorite
               coder, tracker and gfxian?

<lluvia> hehe, there are many many. do I have to say names?

<|ps|> yes! thats the whole point! :) well.. i cant force you..
               but.. :P

        <lluvia> :) well I'll try then
coders, well it's very difficult, coz I'm quite new in
there, and I don't know if I can really appreciate the
actual work of a coder when seeing the demo

<|ps|> its easy... the most weird things are the harder to code! :D
and the ones that go faster :P

<lluvia> I can only say if I like the design, but technically I
                 don't know sh*t:)
let's say I like Skal:) (not only because he's a friend of
mine:) hehe well Skal is original I think
                 I like Statix too

<|ps|> well.. nice picked then! :D
for a girl that cant analise code you pick them pretty well :P
what about gfxians and trackers? :)

<lluvia> hum well they are popular too:)
graphicians, well I like Boz (hehe, a friend again:)),
I like Made's work (even if we had a quarrel recently, he's
still a good graphician), I like Moxica, Flan, well too
                 many ppl...

        <|ps|> and musicians.. :)

<lluvia> and musician, wow, there are really many let's say

<|ps|> Luckily your used to type alot! :)

<lluvia> ! I love Radix, Awesome, Falcon, Basehead, Scorpik, well
                 really many people :)
it's because I like to answer the question properly:)

        <|ps|> :)

        Session Start: Sun Jul 25 14:58:12 1999

<|ps|> where do you get inspiration to track?

        <lluvia> usual question:)
well I don't know... in every little thing around me,
in some events, in some feelings, in some music I hear,
                 in anything actually

<|ps|> :) hehe.. your a musician.. comes with the territory these
questions :) what kind of music do you listen to?

        <lluvia> no, it's just that I don't really know
I'm very eclectic (hum, is that an english word?)
I love every kind of music, except rap
there are good things in every style of music

        <|ps|> like what?

<lluvia> like anything, classical music, jazz, trance, experimental,
ballads, rock, pop, ambient, new age... etc

<|ps|> the lunch took away my imagination.. dont know what to ask..
humm.. let me think.. whats your favorite icecream flavour?

<lluvia> hum, I don't think I've tasted all the flavours that can
exist:) I like exotic fruits usually, like coconut,
melon... once I tasted a "rose" ice cream, it was really
                 strange, like eating a flower:)
                 but not that bad though

        <|ps|> whats your favorite bird?

        <lluvia> hum, my cat
hehe yes, it's a bird, I can tell you she can fly:))
                 (her name's PiouPiou even)
anyway, I love birds, I mean, real birds, when I'm at my
parents' in the country side, I love beeing waken up by
                 their songs

<|ps|> hehe how does she look? :)

<lluvia> my cat? well I can send you a pic:)

        <|ps|> oh goodie goodie!!!

        <lluvia> no , better idea: http://lluvia.planet-d.net/live.html
(oh, about my cat, there is a pic on my site too :)
                 on the "me" page)
well she didn' really agree with the pic though

<|ps|> do you use computers for other things or do you only see in
them as an instrument to make music?

        <|ps|> haha :) cute cat :)

        <lluvia> well, if I didn't track, I would never have bought a
computer... even if I had one when I was younger, and made
some basic programs with my little brother :)

<|ps|> ok, now im really out of questions... want to say hi to
               anyone? :)

<lluvia> many ppl yes:) how many lines am I allowed to use?

<|ps|> as many as you want! :)

<lluvia> ok, fasten your seat belt then:)
First of all, the scene girls, and especially Nogsf, Malon,
                 Manka, Bonnie, DjPudding, Peachpie...

        * |ps| goes get something to eat again... This is going to take long

<|ps|> anyways.. do you have an homepage and an email for your fans
               to harrass you? :)

        <lluvia> well yes:) http://lluvia.planet-d.net
                 e-mail: lluvia@planet-d.net

<|ps|> well.. what are your plans for the future now? :)

        <lluvia> wow, I don't know! I'm in a very hesitating period
I'll answer that question in one or two years ok?:)

        <|ps|> why?

<lluvia> well because I'm interested in many things, but I can't seem
to choose one single thing and make it only for the rest
                 of my life

<|ps|> cant you keep doing them all?

<lluvia> well you must have a job:)
but if I could, it would be great yes:)

<|ps|> :P cant you have a job with things you like doing? :)

<lluvia> yes, but I must choose ONE as I told you :)

<|ps|> :) ok! so, its time to close this interview
               unfortunatly that is.. :/
thank you for your time anne! :) you have any final words?

<lluvia> well.... I can't seem to find a nice and clever sentence,
so I just say thanx, hope you people enjoy my music, and
                 have a nice summer :)

<|ps|> hehe :) cya around anne. thx for the interview :)

=====! demo !==================================================================

Moral Hard Candy by Blasphemy (party-version)

        Found at www.scene.org
1st place at the Summer Encounter'99

        System requirements:
          Big machine (suggested: PII 350), Win32 (So win9x or win3.1 + win32
will do, I don't know about winNT), DirectX 3+, and "some memory",
there is a -lowmem parameter in case you get out-of-mem errors.
        5 MB HD

        The demo:
So, the demo that won SE99 has been made by Blasphemy. Does that
mean it uses a wide-screen hi-res mode? Yes, it does. Does that mean
that it features anti-aliased lines? Yes, it does. Does it mean
there are flat-shaded morphing objects all over the place? Yes, it
does. BUT THERE IS MORE! For the first time, I'm actually impressed
by the CODE of a design-demo. Hundreds of transparent blue pyramids,
each rapidly changing orientation but still forming a solid stream.
A combination of a tunnel and a wireframe-net, with at least three
layers of scrolling background-pictures. 5 massive light-beams that
are emitted from a strange object in a fully texturemapped cave
(in hi-res, mind you), and that we follow through a tunnel in a
Hplus-like fashion, with again an occasional transparent picture
over it. Wow! And the pictures are pretty good: this kind of demo
has of course no full-screen girlie-pictures in it, but in other
design-demos, backgrounds are usually limited to a few anti-aliased
lines, circles and letters, or a few big single-color areas. Here,
we have for example a recursive hand (top of finger = another hand),
or schemas of electronic equipment (I think). It's hard to speak of
"a background", as there are usually several layers of pictures
scrolling in different directions at different speeds. I've watched
it several times, and I keep finding new things.
Only one part that should have been left out: a red figure that is
so blurred that it is unrecognizable, with a background of blurred
points. All other parts are really sharp, and this part disrupts the
overall feeling (just my opinion, of course).

        The music:
Design-demos have a semi-standard kind of music, and this is no
exception. You know, ethereal high tones that do not really form a
melody, with semi-random rattles, lots of different percussion etc.
Not my favorite style, but I do like this one. It's high-quality
(mostly 16-bit samples, some over 300K big), and it fits the demo
as a made-to-measure shoe. Close your eyes and you can perfectly
hear how complex the currently-shown scene is, and how it evolves,
just by listening to the amount of percussion and the volume of the
lead. Some objects follow the beat, such as the pulsing blue stream,
but not always, so it's not predictive, and hence not boring.

        Worth the download?
I was a bit surprised that I liked Moral Hard Candy so much, as
I'm not really a fan of design-demos. So I watched a few older demos
with the same style and I tried to pin down the
        differences/improvements:
        - If objects are simple (like cubes or tetrahedrons), there are
shown LOTS of them, say 100 instead of 10, and often transparent.
        - Backgrounds are not just lines and numbers, but they show objects.
OK, it's not always clear what kind of objects, but at least you
can have fun figuring out what they are :)
        - One "main" object/effect is always complemented by several little
effects, such as pictures scrolling in several directions, or just
circles appearing and disappearing randomly. Simple, but it helps
          a lot to prevent boredom.
Together, these things really boost the WOW!-factor of the demo.

So, for the not-so-fast readers that don't know what to do, here
is a little schema you should follow:

Do you like demos with hi-res design?
Yes: -> Download Moral Hard Candy & watch it.
No: Do you like demos with great code?
Yes: -> Download Moral Hard Candy & watch it.
No: Do you like demos with perfectly synchronized music?
Yes: -> Download Moral Hard Candy & watch it.
No: Do you like demos with lots of strange pictures?
Yes: -> Download Moral Hard Candy & watch it.
No: Bang your head against the wall really hard a few
times and start again with the first question.

There's only one excuse for not watching it: if your PC doesn't
meets the requirements. In that case, watch it on a friends PC, and
you'll run to the nearest PC-shop to buy yourself a PII 350. You
        have been warned.
                                                                        Seven

[editor: oh please can someone take me out of my misery, the damn
demo doesnt work on my machine! Of all people this could
have happened to, it had to happen to me, blasphemy's #1
fan. Shutup roger, i already told that i am the #1 fan not
                 you! memememememememe.
                 HHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!]

=====! intro !=================================================================

        Ethik by Haujobb

        Found at scene.org
1st at Summer Encounter 99 64k intro compo

        System requirements:
No idea. Maybe a pentium and vesa2 drivers. Oh, and a clean DOS,
        no windows-boxes.

        The intro:
It starts with the normal small precalc as in every intro, then
we get a 3d spaceship very similar to the one in the bomb demos.
Everything is very blurred and clean, the demo syncs to the beat of
the music with some inverted color schemes and antialised lines
marking the faces. The camera circles around the ship a couple of
times and then enters the ship, everything just looks like a demo and
thats the plus factor on this intro, textures are normal, 3d scenes
are normal. Credits and greets are delivered using transparent BIG
pics (harder to squeeze into 64k) Ultimatly we also get a 2d effect
(rather good i might add) to go along with the flow, we hand with
some screen shots of the previous 3d scenes and thats it.

        The music:
It gets a bit repetitive on the final parts as some patterns repeat
themselves, but the music is good for an intro, somewhere between
        the typical demomusic standards.

        Worth the download?
Any intro is worth the download in my point of view. They are too
small for any complaints. This one is on the standard of intros these
days, nothing really new but everything is made to look like a short
demo and not an intro, big 3d scenes/objects, diferent textures, big
pictures for credits/greets, normal music, everything squeezed into
        64k.
                                                                           ps
