=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Sat Jul 10 22:23:03 1999

        *** civax has joined #demojournal

        <|ps|> so hello!

<civax> hey, just let me come. err... finish...

<|ps|> so we are live from.. ? somewhere in wales? :)

<civax> in leeds, which is still in england. i got smash sitting
                with me commenting my words...

<|ps|> =) so for those who dont know you who are you? :)

        * |ps| waves hi to smash

<civax> ohad barzilay, aka civax / moon hunters. I used to run the
biggest scene board in israel, almo main organizwer of
mov95,96,97,98 and one of the coorganizers in asm97.
and a cool guy, really! ask anyone!

        <smash> its not true

        <|ps|> smash: :D
               how is dejavu2 like? :)

<civax> how is what? Oh the thing i'm in? well, its a nice
demo party. its nice to see how it starts. people here are
quite cool, and actually i'm not the only foreigner here,
there are 2 guys from norway and another one for australia
too, so i guess its an international party :)

<|ps|> =) so how did an isrealy get to be at a british demoparty?
               (besides taking the plane excuse)

<civax> well, i was actually traveling ireland to my enjoyment and
i just took a wrong turn and found myself in leeds!!

<|ps|> i understand how that happens...
isnt ireland separated from england by sea?

<civax> oh, so thats what it was! I was wondering why is that lake
                so big!

<|ps|> hehehe :) any true to the rumour it rains all the time in
               england?

<civax> actually i arrived leeds yesterday evening and didn't know
where the partyplace was so i ended up sleeping in the park
next to some drunk guys and in the morning was almost
arrested when i was showering in a tap i found in the park.
the cops saw me nude and started going towards me... I just
                barely ran away...

        <|ps|> bahahaha :)

<civax> well, its quite nice the last 2 days here, the english guys
say its hot, but its just nice.

<|ps|> what do you do back home? work?

        <civax> study and work

        <|ps|> seems boring to me.

<civax> i study physics in the hebrew university in jerusalem and
work for a company called Geo interactive

        <|ps|> how is cfx going?

<civax> cfx is actually coders f/x, the bbs, but I basically closed
it since i need the computer for my studies in jerusalem.
but I'm working on CFXweb now, so it might come out again!
                how's demoj is doing?

<|ps|> its going bad! :P im sick of doing interviews :P

<civax> well, thats cause we're all megalimaniacs and you're sick
of talking about other people. ok, ps, tell us who and what
                you are?

<|ps|> im a little lamer on a dot in portugal. :/
isnt cfx also the name of a newsletter related to your bbs or
you have closed it down too?

<civax> cfx newsletter started as the bbs news and only later became
a full scale newsletter read by 90% (atleast) of the israeli
scene. I might continue it as part of CFXweb

<|ps|> how is the israeli scene going?

<civax> well, the il scene is quite silent now that cfx isn't
working, and most people think its going to die... but I
                hope it won't.
I was centering the il scene for 5-6 years, and people
can't expect me to do it forever. some new sceners need
                to take over!

<|ps|> how are the demoparties going?

<civax> demoparties are cool!!!! Kombat / immortals is trying to be
in as many of them as possible before he goes to the army,
and I'll still be active in the parties around the world!

<|ps|> another ohad. ohad's in israel are like john in the usa no?

<civax> no, actually its not that common name, its just that ohad's
usually are smart intelligent beautiful guys.
                we rock!!

        <|ps|> bahahahahahahahaahahah :)

<civax> well, what about the scene? do you think the scene is
                getting smaller?

<|ps|> humm.. well actually yes, i think there are less and less
people interested in entering the scene. you agree? :)

<civax> I think its alot harder to get new sceners to the scene
nowadays then it used to, cause demos aren't ahead of games
anymore, and they don't look THAT amaizing thext to all the
games demos that takes whole cds.

<|ps|> so you think we should start making bigger and better demos?:)

<civax> well, another thing: effects ued to be simple and
understandable and nowdays is really hard for begginers,
specially since NO NEW SOURCES get released...
beginners just have too many technical dificulties to do
                something impressive.

<|ps|> so your a fan of opensource code? :)

<civax> open source WITH DOCUMANTATION. or a tutor.
just 111100 lines of code sais nothing even to the original
                coder... :)

<|ps|> well.. what about coders who dont know the logic of what
they are doing and just rip others code?

<civax> maybe they could do that few years ago, when effects were
2-3 routines. today its too complicated.... :)

<|ps|> so when did your passion for demos errupt? :)

        <civax> passion? you said passion?

        <|ps|> yeah =D i did.. :)

        <civax> ho! demos! right

        <|ps|> bahahahahaha :)

<civax> well, I was a cracker and I used to see all these cool
intros groups made (TRSI/RED SECTOR/THG ect) so soon i
started doing only intros and stopped cracking..

<|ps|> you never got busted? :)

<civax> i released little intros for bbses with the full source code,
that how people started to know me

<|ps|> you never had cases where people used your code and putten
               their name on it?

<civax> people try to avoid mentioning any connection to me, so they
will CERTAINLY not use MY name!

<|ps|> i mean with ripping your code you dumb ass :)

<civax> ho, I though you were talking to me, tell me when you'll
finish to talk to dumb ass.

        <|ps|> :P

        * civax looks around
        * civax picks his nose
        * |ps| slaps civax
        * civax finds something interesting
        * civax examins it.

<|ps|> you should pick your nose in front of the cameras
               its rude :)

        * civax examins it CAREFULLY.

        <civax> GOLD!!! GOLD!!!

<|ps|> bahahahah in your nose? :P

<civax> ho, no. its just yellow.
                stop making faces, you're GROSS!

<|ps|> :P are you ready for demojournal top quizshow contest?

<civax> sure, hit me, hit me!!!
(there's a dj session over here and i help him with my flash
light, doing figures in the dance-floor)

        * |ps| hits civax with an anvil

<|ps|> 1. whats your favorite color?

        <civax> 1. purple! (motion)

<|ps|> 2. whats the capital of madagascar?
               whos the dj? :P

<civax> 2. donno, and nobody else does too
(just yelled it in the party place)
                dj? you mean Demo Journal?

<|ps|> no, diskjockey :) you know.. the guy picking the songs.. :)

        <civax> whats a diskjoker?

<|ps|> he makes stupid jokes about disks?!?! :P

        <civax> ho. well, donno, he's just... a guy... :)
no, he actually not very funny, just really noisy.

<|ps|> 3. if you could take only 3 things to a desert island what
               would you take?

<civax> 1. My computer (of cource with internet connection)
                2. my backpack with all water tanks full
                3. my girlfriend

<|ps|> i think she will be very happy to know you left her to 3rd
               spot :P

        <civax> { if girlfriend == 0 then doTakeMoreWater }
well currently girlfriend == 2 so they will be ok.

<|ps|> 4. have you ever practised cordless bungee jumping?

<civax> 4. no, but i tried parashuteless skydiving. really cool,
thought you gotta avoid the landing as much as possiable.

        <|ps|> civax: *grin*
               5. whats the diference between a quaker and a scener?

<civax> is there a differece? errrrr... well.. sceners don't come
                to demo parties, quaker do?

        <|ps|> bahahah :)
               whats your favorite demo?

<civax> ps: shit thats hard. probably good old second realty,
though it used to be for a while sunflower.

<|ps|> what about more recent ones? anything you like? :)

<civax> well, you ask alot of question, why not asking whats the
                color of my underware!?
no. the recent ones weren't as inspiring as these. nothing
that makes you remember them specifically - just another
demo. maybe jumpy by digital murder because of the drummer
                part in the end.
that was unique - you can have your own xm and it will play

=====! demo !==================================================================

Angeldust phase II by Chrome & Astroidea

Found on the Dreams 2 CD-ROM
        1st place at the Jumper'97

        For your information:
There have been several smaller parties recently (VIP, Jumper 2k-1,
Chaos'99), but I haven't found any entries or result-files yet. As
I'm VERY busy with my 4K-intro for Inscene'99 (which will be over by
the time you read this), I've no time to download & check demos
randomly. At such moments, a reviewer has the right to browse an
archive-CD, review a demo that is good but not so well known, and
        blame it on nostalgia :)

[editor: or blame it on the mag editor who begged for the reviewer
to review this demo isnt it right 7? :)]

        System requirements:
1.7MB HD, standard VGA-card, SB or GUS (those were the days!)
Guessing: 8 MB RAM, a pentium

        The demo:
Angeldust was a demo made by some broken-hearted, suicidal sceners
(or so it seemed), and Angeldust II keeps the same theme, albeit a
little less dark. Love: can we live without it? And can we live with
it? Doubts... The whole demo runs in 256 colors, with a
yellow-greenish palette. This enables blending & crossfades, effects
we are so used to see in hi-color demos. Thoughts or slogans are
shown everywhere, like "lies are filling up my body", or "I don't
trust myself, but I trust you". The effects aren't very impressive,
nowadays (but hey, how many current demos will be impressive in two
years?). A few landscape fly-overs, distorted and bump-mapped faces,
polar effects with little windows in which an other effect is
shown...The one-color palette, together with the TV-snow filter in
the begin-part gives the demo a very low-fi look, that really fits
the lyrics and the overall feeling. There is only one hand-drawn
picture, a big title-logo, the rest are photos of girl-faces.

        The music:
A perfectly fitting but very strange soundtrack. I'll try to
describe it anyway: it starts very slow and dark, no melody, no
percussion, just an ambient humming that slowly goes up and down.
This continues during the whole tune. Then the percussion starts,
with fast-changing effects synchronized to it. There's much variation
in the percussion, which is necessary as there is no real
lead-instrument in it. At the slower parts, we hear bells and a
whispering voice. At the end when the speed increases, there are
lots of white flashes that I dislike a bit.

        Worth the download?
Angeldust II may seem nothing special when you read the above,
but the best thing is the design, which is really hard to describe.
There are many details that all add something to the demo, like the
flashing 3D-head of a robot, superimposed over a pretty girl, or the
landscape that is really coarse at the beginning, but very smooth
when a girls eyes are shown at the horizon, ... The more you watch
it, the more meaning it gets. When I saw it again, I wondered how
few demos about feelings are made, compared to music. Here you
have one of the few; don't hesitate to check it out.
                                                                        Seven

[editor: you dont just watch and listen angeldust2. you feel it.
you HAVE to dim the lights and turn on the speakers.
this is one of the best demos ever made. whole team who put
this one together deserves my full respect. this one is
specially for you tsc! you rule! :)]

=====! music !=================================================================

Inner City Funk EP by Noby / the sound of Helsinki
                                              available at http://come.to/tsh
                                                                         1999

Distinctive or at least curios house/monobeat
(or that's how it sounds to me)

The following titles included and analyzed:

        inhuman

Built on a freaky string sample going on and on, with some
trip-hoppish ambience stuff hoovering about. Haunted voice seems to
be whispering something like "dance with me" (tough the sample
played alone didn't say anything like that). Bassline sounds like a
load of celloist playing wild staccatos through an echo box-effect.
Tune is very repetetive, though; when it catches you on it's near
brilliance, if it doesn't, it can leave one cold. The drum beat is
at times repulsively boring and at times imaginetively attractive.
        Curious.

        Inner City Funk

Sounds more like common house, with all those trendy
"uh-huh" - samples around. :) Builds nicely and is quite groovy. And
that's just the intro part - it breaks, twists and ho - the sound
changes, beat is more muffled and flanged, keyboard-ish melody comes
in - it's still the same tune, just completely different. It's a
treat this far - too bad nothing else really happens for the rest
couple of minutes, unless you count the nothing-achieving quote from
mr.Oizos Flat Beat somewhere after the middle. Grooves on all right,
though - this _is_ dance music, after all. :)

        tomorrow

Opens with a fade-in of echoing, fast but still graspingly eerie
beats which are quite groovy. Then comes perhaps a bit tricky
hihat-sequence, which is quite hard to grasp during the first
playing - but soon it changes and merges with the main beat. The
combination pushes onward with considerable strenght until a
somewhat unfitting sound comes along (credited Poly S-61). On the
other hand, this creates a controversiality, which can sometimes
have a very impressive effect, but in this piece it doesn't
contribute too much with the rest of the song and a bit of tears it
apart.. and on the remaining hand, it could have a very freaking
effect on the listener if he/she had just, say, stayed up and awake
        for >28 hours.

Fades out at 05:30, leaving a bit unnerved feeling, as if there
had not been a complete satisfactory. Still a forcefull and enjoyable
(if in a perverted way) tune, after all.

If you're into house/monobeat/other similar, you ought indeed to
check this out - it's not perfect, but it's intresting and original
enough (for me atleast). Worth my downloading time. And we're
looking forwards for Noby's next product, aren't we?
                                                                - PuQ / tempo

[editor: so now you know the ultimate tip for relationships with
girls... sorry to the girls reading this. i hope you find

=====! question !==============================================================

        >why do we live our life when we do not have a goal for it?

Classic answer: because we MIGHT still find our goal.
So in fact one could say that, may it be at a probably subconcious
level, at that moment our goal becomes finding our goal.
Which is actually the situation most people find themselves in.
And besides that, while searching for ones own goal one can
have great fun stopping other people from reaching theirs *grin*.
        -The Watcher^TUHB

to live is to resist. life is not futile.
        -bam!eVolve

        hapiness/perfection maybe considered goals.
if i didn't have any kind of goal i'd kill myself.
        -rents / digital artists

life is not made of goals, it's made so you can find out what you're
go at, if you didn't died. ask mozart.
-artist previously known as cremax ;)

We live in order to enjoy our lives. And to ensure that our genes
        will remain for several centuries.
        -Adok/Hugi

No, life is senseless and absurd, but what should we do in those
years that were given to us? Try to forget that.
        -Csordas Gabor

        to find this goal :)
        -gandalf

yeah.. simple answer. Our goal is to learn to live the life in a
correct way. Then we discover our final goal.
        -dave

"flowers bloom and they don't ask why"
cp/teklords, who doesn't remember where he read that...

I don't know.. life sux a lot, but i still live it.. i suppose we
all have some sort of hope that something better migh happen..
til there i'll keep working or something to forget life
        -Attack / WIJ

        now that's an easy one.
to have the opportunity to find things like hplus.zip by accident.
-viinikala [editor: bahahahah :) nice one!]
