=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Sun May 23 01:12:35 1999

        *** ^Traven^ has joined #demojournal

<|ps|> who are you? :) where do you live? whats your shoe number and
how many brothers do you have?

<^Traven^> Hi, i am Traven of Syndrome. I live in the incredibly
beautiful city nammed Paris, in France. My shoe number is
43-44 (french size), and I have one brother, 3 half ones,
                   and one half sister. :)

<|ps|> uhuh, big family! :) anyways, what do you do on the scene?

<^Traven^> I am a musician. And I try to some pictures but well...
I should concentrate on music! :)

<|ps|> when did you first started to track, in what machine, which
               software and why?

<^Traven^> I started tracking in 1993 on my old Amiga, with a awful
software called "Sound FX". I thought tracking was a good
way to print my musical ideas. Better than play piano and
imagine all others instruments in my head! :)

<|ps|> you had any musical theory background? (piano classes or
               something like that)

<^Traven^> No. But I started to play the piano when I was 4 on my
father's old organ (well ok, it was an organ :). But I am
interested by solfeggio, it is very important and allow
you to know. All that by autodidact way.
So i knew lots of "musical stuffs" when i started
                   tracking.

<|ps|> is it hard to express yourself through tracking? or is it
something that comes with the experience?

<^Traven^> All these years were especially technical learning. This
is not about difficulty, but more about ideas. If you
have ideas you can "print" them when tracking. And of
course, technics is the tool which allows you to do it
better. I think technics comes with experience.

<|ps|> have you ever had any ideas but you couldnt "print" them
               correctly?

<^Traven^> Oh yes there were! And there still are. But I think, when
you have time, motivation, and technical ideas, you can
do everything. My main occupation at the moment is to
have a real orchestral sound with Fasttracker 2.

<|ps|> have you done anything positive so far?

        <^Traven^> Almost... :)

<|ps|> well, you told me previously you were doing syndrome demo for
assembly99, is this the soundtrack then?

<^Traven^> How keen you are :) Exactly.

<|ps|> tell us more about syndrome... history, past, present and
               future..

<^Traven^> Ok :) Syndrome was founded in 1995 by Tenshu and Codac.
We made a few "serious" demos and lots of funny ones on
amiga. But only french people could understand these.
In the early 1997, a few members (Guille Nytrik and Maf)
left Syndrome and created Cocoon. In 1998, Gengis (yes!)
joined Syndrome. But didn't release anything because he
was very busy (and he still is) Two weeks ago, Tenshu
quit and allowed me to "rebuild" the group.

<|ps|> so who is in syndrome right now?

<^Traven^> So, here comes the member list:
CODE: Codac, Gengis, Geek, Nasty Boy, Fks, Araya.
                   GFX: Zaac, Kobi.
                   Music: Me :)
And please welcome our new members Kinan as a graphist
and X-barr as a graphist and excellent coder! I think
that is all. Hope i didn't forget any one :)

        <|ps|> big member list! :)

<^Traven^> yes but only a few are actually really active

<|ps|> i hope that is changing soon! :)

<^Traven^> Not as much as me :)

<|ps|> anyways, what are your favorite demos, artists and scene
               musicians?

<^Traven^> Well, my favorite demos are of course old classical ones
like Arte, State of the Art, Nine Fingers, Interference,
Closer and Killer from CNCD (which is my favourite group).
My favorite graphicians are Ra, Tenshu, and my lovely
Made. Because they have different styles, and are the
best in their own. My favourite musicians were Moby
(master!:), Nuke, Vinnie. I think they really had that
"curious power" that made their tunes incredibly good.
For the code i would say Jamie is my favourite. He did
the BEST 3d engine ever on amiga.

<|ps|> talking about moby, it seems he is about to release a CD! Are
you going to buy it as soon as its available then?

<^Traven^> OF COURSE!!! I can't miss it, I spent my first tracking
years hoping he would release one!

<|ps|> talking about amiga, tell me about the design in amiga demos.

<^Traven^> I am not an expert :) But I can say on the Amiga, you
HAVE to compensate the lack of power and speed by ideas
and different ways to show effects, with a certain
esthethicism. That's why most of great demos on the Amiga
                   are based on simple things.

<|ps|> and that doesnt happen on PC?

<^Traven^> It does not happen very often

<|ps|> do you follow the PC demoscene or do you stick with amiga?

<^Traven^> I follow, I love my Amiga like i could not love any
machine in the world. Early Pc owners can not understand.
But now, I think we should try to make real artistic
stuff with the power Pc offers. I'll try that :)

<|ps|> so is syndrome PC group too? or not yet?

<^Traven^> Syndrome is a Pc group since november 1997 :)

<|ps|> it is, what have you done on PC so far then? :)

        <^Traven^> Shad and Shad 2

<|ps|> uh, well.. besides shad! :P shad doesnt count! its a co-op
               with cocoon! :)

<^Traven^> Huu.. We didn't release any production without co-op :)
                   But it's coming :)

<|ps|> hehe ok. so, what parties have you been to?

        <^Traven^> Saturne 4 and 5, Ltp 1, ltp 2 (co-organizer),
                   Volcanic 3,4,5, The Party 6, Wired 97 and 98, TO 98.
                   I think that's all. I forgot Kobi parties :)))

        <|ps|> what was your favorite?

<^Traven^> My favourite were "Made parties" and
                   "Flubby-Zappy Parties" :)

        <|ps|> hehe, why? :)

<^Traven^> Because it was at their homes :)
                   There were naked girls
                   naked pinguins

<|ps|> haha, how many people "attended"? :P

        <^Traven^> I am joking :)
how many people? Let's say 5 or 6 most of the time :)

<|ps|> the pinguins had their clothes on?

        <^Traven^> No, we shaved them!

        <|ps|> YOU BASTARDS!!! ;)

<^Traven^> Pinguins are my favourite sexual toys :)

<|ps|> hehe :) ok, more seriously now, what's so appealing about
               demopartys?

<^Traven^> DEMOS!!! I come to watch new production, my favourite
time during a party is the demo compo. But I also come
to see people I can't see much during the year.

<|ps|> are they still appealing after so much time? (new demos)

<^Traven^> I am not "old-scener" enough to give you a right answer,
but it's true that demo compos are not as exciting than a
                   few years ago.

<|ps|> well.. i dont have much experience but i find demo-compos to
               be dull...

<^Traven^> Yes, that's why I plan to go to "big" parties in the
future. I hope Assembly will be a great one.

<|ps|> uh, well best of luck then! :) for you and your demo at
assembly! :) are you ready for demojournal's top quiz show
               contest now?

        <^Traven^> YEAAAAAAAAAHH!!!!! :)

<|ps|> 1. whats the capital of madagascar?

<^Traven^> euh...I would say Tanarive, but I am not totally sure
                   about this.

        <|ps|> antananarivo! (cheater!)

        <^Traven^> that's the same, no?

        <|ps|> no. wrong answer! :)

        <^Traven^> pffff I won!

<|ps|> 2. whats your favourite color and most dificult.. why?

<^Traven^> It depends on what... For Car, clothes and design, i
would say black. It's smart and mystical at the same time.

<|ps|> 3. whats your favorite icecream flavour?

        <^Traven^> Meat!

<|ps|> 4. how many ferrari testarosa are there in the world?

        <^Traven^> I would say 100 thousands, plus mine, 150 thousand? :)
but i have a more mystical answer: All things I do not
                   possess, do not exist. :)

<|ps|> 5. what is the velocity of an unladden swallow?

        <^Traven^> I dont know... Let me think... 100 Km / Hour ?

        <|ps|> *BEEP* wrong answer.. :)

        <^Traven^> DAMNED!

and mostly talk about your dislikes. Talk about things

=====! demo !==================================================================

        The problem:
OK, I wanted to review Shad2, had seen some impressive screenshots
at the website, but when it was released, I noticed the system
requirements: more than 64MB ram required. I only have 64 so ...
Same with Robot, winner of Icing99 (according to the pre-results):
Voodoo 3D required. Which I haven't. In short, unless someone with
the right hardware would be so kind to review these, DemoJournal will
have to do without them. So if you want to help your fellow sceners,
preventing them from downloading a piece of crap, or from overlooking
the very best demo of 1999, feel free to help...

Ok, on with the review: Mother Earth by Wipe (bugfixed version)

        Found at www.scene.org
        1st place at the Ukonx99-party

        System requirements:
Again nothing mentioned. 9 MB HD. I guess 32 MB RAM should do it.
          Midas-supported soundcard. Vesa2 320*200, but by pressing F1, you
can switch to a looks-like-hi-res interlaced videomode.

        The demo:
Well, a thematic demo. Guess from the title what it is about. There
is not much 3D in it: a virus, some fish, a butterfly, but no rooms
or tunnels. Instead, there are a lot of pictures, several very good
full-screen (photoshopped, I think), and nice little hand-drawn
"icons" everywhere. Most effects are 2D too, some kind of water
effect, the old texture-mapping inside a sphere, and some strange
plasma during the greetings that looks almost 3D. There's nothing
really innovating (in fact some parts give me a deja-vu of
Nature/Vertigo), but it does have its own feeling.

        The music:
It changes a few times: it starts like the intro of a film, with
thunder, building up tension, but after the title pics it becomes
more melodic, relaxed. Drums & guitars kick in during the shark-part,
while singing birds and other ambient sounds can be heard just a few
seconds later. And we end with a jazzy tune during the greetings. As
the demo takes only 3 minutes, I think a bit less variation would
        have kept a better atmosphere.

        Worth the download?
The best part, in my opinion, are the pictures. If there where
twice as many, Wipe could have released an artdisk instead of a
demo :) The rest is not really groundbreaking, but not bad either.
The main contra of those pics is the size: 9 MB is quite a lot for 3
minutes (almost 5MB zipped). So this is one to check out if you're
tired of 3D-only or hi-res design.
                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

<LeeDooper> Replay's new peace is fuckin good. I personally think it
is their best product yet this year. (2 be continue)

<rod_mndl> the music by distance is excellent, fits so well in the
intro, very calm and nice tune/

<|ps|> rod: distance says he thinks that music sucks :P

<rod_mndl> distance, anyway, i like it even if he thinks that :)
replay guys like that, because they used it

<LeeDooper> Their design looks grat again overall, i especially like
the little arrows pointing to an object. That was a
                    great idea!

<|ps|> hehe lee: yeah although the object looked crap :P

        <rod_mndl> hey, ps, it's a review, so don't lash them :)

        <LeeDooper> (realtime review roolzz!)

<|ps|> :P hope someone is logging couz im not

<rod_mndl> i really like the small rectangles on a spline parts.
                   really nice and handsome idea

        * |ps| likes the initial syncing with effects

        * |ps| also likes the lines that go faster and faster until they
turn into normal "cut here" lines

<LeeDooper> Only the last part is what i don't like so much, but i
think they run out of ideas.
                    rod - most a Nocturnal Jazz-t ;)))

<rod_mndl> IT'S YOUR BEST PRODUCTION REPLAY GUYS, KEEP ON WORKING
                   IN THE DEMO FACTORY
nocturnal definitely don't know what is jazz, so don't
                   talk about them :)

<LeeDooper> AND A SPECIAL GREETS TO BALOO, HE IS GOING TO ARMY NOW!
                    PLEASE DON'T BOMB HUNGARY :)

<|ps|> "replay demo factory - we make toys you like watching"
sweden is not in NATO is it?

<LeeDooper> rod - well, ok, i'll review the music then ;)
ps: yes! they're out. so WE will nuke them ;)))

<rod_mndl> no wars at all, wars good for nothing

<|ps|> rod: send the log to me for next demojournal :P

=====! music !=================================================================

        First, sorry for my English.
I've been reading demojournal since number 29 and every 2nd
issue is whole written by ps, so I'm writing this contribution to
help him a bit. [editor: thankyouverymuch] Hope that you will
contribute also after reading, because I'm sure you will think that
you would write it better - so do it ! And hey, I'm no musician so
sorry for not saying what chords in the tunes are :). For replay
of the tunes I've used OCP 2.5.1 (for S3M, MOD), Xmplay 1.4b (for XM)
or IT 2.14 (for IT) on SB Awe64.

        -------------------------------------------

        needle x o
        xhale
        theralite - release 76
        downloaded from scene.org
        year : 1998

Typical xhale - start with slow ambient sound, fast drums, smooth
break between the parts, cutting beats, no leads, time 3:49 - right
enough. If you like his music, you should download this one, but
surely it's not his best. If you don't, than ignore it.

        -------------------------------------------

        Daft overload / Over Reacted
        norfair
        echo off
        all downloaded from scene.org
        2nd at remedy98 / 1997

All songs by norfair I've heard are at least very good and that's
the reason he is in kosmic. Both songs are in his typical style (a
bit jazz), having great percussion, guitars keeping melody running
and flute or piano as the lead. Download all his tunes, that are on
scene.org, because they are all really good. If you're too lazy,
download at least "over reacted" to know what his style is.

        -------------------------------------------

Hope this will help you a bit, when wasting space on your
harddrive. Please send me any comments you have. Also if there is
some song you want to recommend me, my e-mail address is
                                  Vojtech Tryhuk (xtryhu00@stud.fee.vutbr.cz)
                                                                    20.5.1999

[editor: tryhuk has sent some more reviews aswell but i saved them
for next issues. Thank you once again to tryhuk for caring.]

> when was last time you saw 2 girls on first two places at a scene compo?
> (demoparty or not..)

err... there was Lluvia and... er...
Rents / digital artists

Bonnie & Lluvia at Wired party 98, no??
Mephisto/Anta Tribe

I saw.. four or five girls at the first place at remedy 95. wild compo.
/steffo^cryonics

sure, TP98 pixelcompo for example. (btw: was Made really second?!?)
girls always win in pixelcompos. this is not fair, but fortunately
this is not possible in other competitions (I've heard about girls
tracking and even coding, but I've never heard about a tracker or
a coder tracking or coding girls. Perhaps we could learn smtg from
those pixel-maniacs of the scene?!? - btw: coding a 3d engine showing
animated polygon girls does NOT count!!!;)
BAM! eVolve/eXtensive [ed: i was talking about persons not entrys]

don't remember when, don't remember who, i just remember that there
was two pixel graphs which presented naked women... then i saw two girls
on first two places... blah:) out!
