=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Sat May 15 17:45:41 1999

        *** Buckshag has joined #demojournal

        <Buckshag> hi

<|ps|> well, hello there! :) so who are you? :)

<Buckshag> i'm a coder :) well. my real name is john van der burg,
am 21 years old and live in the netherlands

<|ps|> what do you do on real life?

<Buckshag> i'm still doing college, but thinking about quitting my
studies and go work fulltime at a game company. and i
also do freelance work for some game companies at this
                   moment

<|ps|> where have you worked previously?

<Buckshag> last year i did freelance programming work for lionhead
studios for their game black and white, and i just
finished a half year fulltime work for orange games, on
                   their game Core

<|ps|> what have you learned with working with companys? whats the
               real big diference from home-coding?

<Buckshag> i learned a lot about how the 3D engines like unreal etc
exactly work and how to make your own with the same
quality. The big difference is that you have to do
everything yourself if you work at home. When you work
at a company you work with a team, and you work on things
                   where you are specialised at

        *** Lapute has joined #demojournal

*** Lapute was kicked by |ps| (lapute? :P)

[editor: i hope you dont know french...]

        <Buckshag> hehe

<|ps|> tell me more on how things worked.. how is it like? big
               network with ppl talking around?..

        <Buckshag> at a game company?

        <|ps|> yeah..

<Buckshag> well, at the lionhead offices it was more quiet, but
ofcourse there were a lot of fun things there. The people
there work very hard and serious on their projects. At
orange games all ppl were really crazy! it was extreme
fun! I'm sure that you wuuld get crazy if you join a full
day with me over there :) it's not a big network with ppl
talking around. most game companys are not that big
lets say 15 ppl working in 1 room
if there are some things you don't know you can always
ask someone else. there is no sense of competition in a
company. you work in a team, helping eachother

<|ps|> humm then why does it take so long to make a game? :)

<Buckshag> because a game is an ENORMOUS project. everything must be
perfect. It's not like a demo where all camera positions
etc are always the same. You have to deal with a lot of
                   difficult big and small things

        <|ps|> humm.. really? :)

<Buckshag> :)) it also depends on how big a game is ofcourse
you can make a 3D tetris or a game like black and white
                   or core :)

        <|ps|> 3d tetris? :P that sounds interesting.. :P

<Buckshag> hahah ;) those stupid games sell good :) but are no fun
to make :) it's cool to work on things which are never
                   done before

<|ps|> like black and white? :)

        <Buckshag> exactly :)

<|ps|> hehe ok, lets get back to scene.. what have you been doing
               lately? :)

<Buckshag> i was a member of superstition, but i never worked on a
real demo :) that's why i decided to quit superstition
so i am groupless now :) i am working on my own new
3D engine called Oxygen3D you can check it out at
                   www.mysticgd.com

<|ps|> oxygen3d.. uhhhhhh and what are you planning to do with it? :)

<Buckshag> licensing and creating a game with it. and demos :)
because superstition will use that engine too for their
                   demos

<|ps|> so your on superstition or not? make up your mind.. :)

<Buckshag> no :) i only support them with my engine. They have
permission to use it. I don't work on their demos ...
but there will be one day i will make the best demo ever
together with krafton (the 3d modeler)... :)

<|ps|> :( so you wont make any demos yourself?

<Buckshag> maybe... till now i only did 4 hour demos (created in 4
hours or less), and everytime i join a democompo i am the
only one which competes (hardware accelerated compo)
more demogroups should support windows, and hardware
acceleration support most groups are far behind with
                   technology...

<|ps|> why do you say that?

<Buckshag> because i am sure most ppl who have hardware acceleration
in their pc would prefer hardware accelerated demos...
they don't want those ugly poly routines, but they want
fast smooth goodlooking demos :) and most coders think
that hardware acceleration programming is so easy
well. it's not :) it gives you a lot of extra limitations
                   and why not supporting windows?

<|ps|> well.. but almost everyone has diferent hardwares... how do
you comply with that? dont "normal" demos get more potential
               viewers then hardware accelarated ones?

<Buckshag> direct3d supports almost all hardware... also 3DFX. well,
build software AND hardware support then :) my engine
                   supports OpenGL, Direct3D and Glide

<|ps|> will it work on a machine without a 3dfx? and without
               hardware 3d accelaration

<Buckshag> it will work on ALL hardware accel cards, which support
OpenGL, Direct3D or Glide. OpenGL software also works
but that is not fast, because the complete engine is
optimized for hardware accel. further the engine also
uses the Galaxy Soundsystem (the soundsystem which is
also used in the game Unreal)

<|ps|> what if you had done a software only version? wouldnt it give
all the same fps and work on more computers?

<Buckshag> Oxygen3D is a game engine, not a demo engine. However
with a game engine you can also make demos... If it was
software only, it wouldnt give the same FPS, because
hardware acceleration is ofcourse faster, and it looks
much better then software rendering at an acceptable
speed... I think software support in 3D games will slowly
                   dissapear...

<|ps|> isnt that very.. i dunno... capitalist? your making people
               buy hardware...

<Buckshag> all die hard gamers have already bought hardware for the
                   ultimate gaming experience

<|ps|> ultimate gaming experience? :P you sound like a salesman
trying to sell a joystick.. :)

<Buckshag> would you prefer blocky slow 3D, looking ugly, or smooth
running good looking non blocky graphics?

        <|ps|> hehe.. :D smooth please.. :)

<Buckshag> haha yeah sorry, well i'm just giving my opinion :)
ofcourse there are ppl who will laugh at me now...

<|ps|> so what are your plans for the future? just finishing your 3d
               engine? :)

<Buckshag> my engine is never finished :) but i'm working hard on
it, and there will be a time that i say it is finished.
then i will try to sell licenses to other companies...
and ofcourse i will keep freelancing for game companies :)
and i will try to make a demo :)

<|ps|> do you watch demos and intros often or not really?

<Buckshag> i only watch winning party demos
but i have almost never seen a demo with good 3d :(

        <|ps|> well, what about toys/gods? :)

<Buckshag> the 3d looks bad really :) not REALLY bad
the design etc is very cool with the music but the
characters for example... these guys need a skinning
system! :) and it runs damn slow :)

        <|ps|> hehe what about bleam/statix?

<Buckshag> way too slow. but statix coded it in a very short time...
statix can do a loooooooooooot better :)
but it is also slow because of the texture uploads
uploading movie sequences to hardware is slow...

<|ps|> oh yeah, the source of bleam has been released recently..
are you supporter of this kind of things? open source..

        <Buckshag> yeah. opensource is good!

        <|ps|> why?

<Buckshag> because people can learn from these sources

<|ps|> what about the ripping problems..

<Buckshag> thats not cool, and not smart to do. because there are
always ways to do it fast/better. i also prefer not to
just use an algorithm, but think out faster ways, using
the base idea behind the algorithm

<|ps|> are they? you dont believe in limits? :)

<Buckshag> there are no limits :)

<|ps|> hehe :) are you ready for demojournals 5 trivia questions
               quizshow contest? :)

<Buckshag> hehehe probably :) they have sun :)

<|ps|> :P well, is there anything you would like to ask yourself? :)

<Buckshag> yeah. i want to ask myself when i will go downstairs to
                   get some food :)

<|ps|> would you like to say hi to some folks? im kind of out of
               questions.. :)

<Buckshag> hehe. well. let's say hi to krafton, magicboy, eddy,
calimero, the peric, statix, cyble, orange games and all
other cool dudes :) and ofcourse you ;) [ed: why.. thx!]

<|ps|> didnt magicboy change his nick? :)

<Buckshag> magicboy left superstition. he changed his nick, joined
another group. then decided to stop with creating demos.
left that group. then got addicted again to demo coding.
changed his nick back to magicboy and then joined
                   superstition again :)

<|ps|> bahahaha :) really? :) was this before or after ambience? :)

<Buckshag> magicboy is very cool. it's so cool to code with him...
he is very motivated and is great in design and gfx too!
at ambience he did his "signoff" demo. and left
superstition. we even didn't know about it! :)
it was very strange... and now i left superstition.
(i look like magicboy now) :) maybe i'll ever join
                   again :)

<|ps|> hehe :) superstition looks like a weird group :)

<Buckshag> yeah. but we all know each other personally, so it's a
group which you can't really leave :)
krafton also joined superstition lately. he will help
                   calimero with modeling

<|ps|> thats cool! :) well.. i guess this is it.. :) wanna drop some
               url or email? :)

<Buckshag> yeah. TO ALL DEMOCODERS : GET PIGS (platform independent
game shell). I also use it, it is the base system of
orange games. It's free, it offers you EVERYTHING you
need. And you automaticly got opengl, direct3d and glide
support, and it includes the famous sound system also
used in unreal!! get it! *commercial break* :))
                   www.orangegames.com

        <|ps|> :) what about email? :)

<Buckshag> send all your stupid emails to john@mysticgd.com or
                   john@orangegames.com :)

<|ps|> well.. this is it! thx for your time! :)

        <Buckshag> no thanks! bye bye!

=====! demo !==================================================================

        "187" from Woorlic <http://woorlic.hostname.nu>
        Badly qualified at Midwinter'98 ;)

whizzter coded. lenin pixelled. fat-pacifist pixelled some more.
thing fastracked. fnippo dreaded some dreads.

The demo had to be run under fake mode due to some vesa problems
with compo machine and well.. fakemode was untested so it kinda
bugged. :P So that explains bad place at midwinter.
The whole demo is very designed and with some okayish graphics.
Things arent necesarily linked together but they are defintly synced
to the music. All small clitches are synced to the music... From
        background effects to graphical movements.
Small downside of the demo is the graphics really... It's a very
good effort and with lots of graphics but all pics look rather
unpolished and unfinished. :( Lack of time maybe?
The code is demo standard. A little bit of everything... Tunnels,
3D objects, particles... No 3d engine but some funky and colourfull
2d effects to make up for it! :) And astonishing syncing with the
music which really gives out a cool feeling to it.
As for the musical part. It's the normal demo tune. Syncable and
        sounding good.
Taking into account that its only 700k this is a great demo! :)
Nice effort from the swedish guys! :)
                                                                           ps

=====! intro !=================================================================

        "4k-1" by vudu + n-fashion
        2nd place at Mekka&Symposium 2k-1 4k PC intro compo
        ftp://ftp.scene.org/incoming/MS99/4k/4k-1_fin.zip

We have sound! :) We have water effect. We have truecolor particles.
We have truecolor particles reflection on surface. We have truecolor
particles reflecting on water effect limited on surface by a
mandelbrot fractal. We have truecolor particles beeing the source of
the water effect when they touch their reflection on the water effect
limited on a surface by a mandelbrot fractal.
Particles are nice! We like particles! ;)
          Vudu code. n-fashion music.
                                                                           ps

=====! music !=================================================================

maybe someone can review white's musicdisk fart5

        [editor: maybe...]

i'd review it like this: "It contains several IT tunes which are
partly originals by White and partly remixes. Most of them are pretty
weird and experimental. But I personally like this style. Really. But
you have to know, I have a weird taste of music. At least that's what
        most people say."

[editor: sounds like a review to me!]

        ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/disks/fart5.zip

but add to it that i wrote it live on irc and was busy answering
queries at the same time :D and some words about the author:
"The author is called White. He comes from Israel and is a member of
a group called Fart. You can meet him at IRCNet #coders."

[editor: ok adok! ill write that then! thx! :)]
                                                                         adok

=====! question !==============================================================

> fm = five musicians music group last time i checked.
> lets try again...
> whats your favorite -> FM <- musicidisk?

appelsap.
distance

Despite following the music scene since the Amiga days, I'm not into
oldschool style mods, so as far as my tastes go, FM kinda resumes to md and
hunz. So my favourite musicdisk... really undecided between blur-green and
md-disk...
Rents / DAWN

well yes, of course. appelsap. :)
-viinikala

Two Years, of course :)
dave

progression by necros, i especially like
tune "grey note".

no, oddities
no, 2 years
no, soul elements,

I don't care. I have all of them and they are all great :)
BAM! eVolve/eXtensive [FAIM]

2 Years.

i'm not sure if appelsap can be counted in.
if not, it's definitely
     b l u r .
     p l a s t i q
-viinikala

"two years"
I specially enjoyed the VERSIONS.XM composed by Wave, one of the best
(and very well finished) tune that I've heard until now.

byter

md's appelsap ofcourse.

[editor: humm i find weird not many people like basehead's disks... all 4
