=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Fri May 07 22:27:09 1999

        *** Khyron has joined #demojournal

<|ps|> hello! so tell us who you are..

<Khyron> I'm Paul Schultz aka Khyron of Kosmic.. a weird ass
                 musician kind of guy

<|ps|> where do you live, study or work?

        <Khyron> Unfortunately I live in Cincinnati Ohio.. I don't study, I
work full time as a network admin at a local ISP here

        <|ps|> how old are you?

<Khyron> 20 years of smoking crack and boozing

<|ps|> why do you say unfortunatly you live in cincinnati?

<Khyron> Cincinnati's about one of the dullest places you'll ever
find.. the general population here is pretty stuck up and
conservative and there's really not much to do.. I've been
trying to get out of here for a while but so far no success
                 :)

<|ps|> whats the problem? no cash?

<Khyron> I really don't want to just jump into a new city without
having a job and that sort of stuff.. I *almost* got out to
Seattle (had a company fly me out there for two nights and
everything) but the bastards ended up shafting me in the
                 end :)

<|ps|> so your a musician! tell us how you got started..

        <Khyron> well i've been a musician for a long time.. I originally
started playing bass back when I was about 11 or 12 years
old. Around 93 I started getting into industrial and
techno type music and around 1994 I picked up my first
tracker (mmedit) and just started pumping stuff out from
                 there

<|ps|> how many tracks have you released so far?

<Khyron> erm not nearly enough :) Probably only 20 songs actually
released.. most of my work usually ends up being 50% to 75%
before I abandon it for one reason or another.. if you count
how many tunes I could probably spend a bit of effort to
finish and release it would be around 100 or so :)
and there's a few songs i've done with studio type gear
(midi, samplers, old cool analog synths) that i haven't
                 released.

<|ps|> are you into computers or do you just see them as a way to
               get your music done...

<Khyron> i'm into computers.. I do networking for a living so I get
pretty deep into them.. I've been playing on computers
since my old Tandy 1000 8086.. For a while they were a
means to get music made, but over time I just started
diving deeper and deeper into networking and unix and all
sorts of crazy ass shit that scares me

<|ps|> tandy was your first computer? what about from there on? PC
               only?

<Khyron> uhm let's see what lines the closet.. Tandy 1000, 486/50,
                 Cyrix 5x86 120, 6x86 166+, P2-300, MII-300, and I'm putting
together a dual 450mhz celeron machine right now
                 (overclocked).. i think that's it

<|ps|> so what tracker do you see as best nowdays? still the
               fasttracker?

<Khyron> I still use Fasttracker 2 just because I'm so used to it..
I've got my walls lined with all sorts of studio gear if I
want to make something with the advanced features that some
other trackers may be able to provide.. IT seems to be the
best all around tracker, but I havn't used an interface like
that since ST3.. for me if I'm going to track something
it's going to be oldschool style.. no high end effects or
other crazy stuff.. just samples and old tracker effects

<|ps|> what do you mean tracker effects?

<Khyron> the good old stuff like porta up, porta down, sample
offset, volume slides.. etc.. no filters, reverb, software
                 oscillators, etc

        <|ps|> i see

<Khyron> but then again most people don't have the same type of gear
that I do for the filters, reverb, etc :)

<|ps|> so what style do you like best to track, why and where do you
               get the inspiration from?

<Khyron> i like making trance a lot.. but making good old demotune
cheese (especially in 4 channel .MOD format) is always
really fun to me.. as for the studio side of things I've
been doing some industrial stuff lately (which I used to
track a lot, but havn't in a long ass time) and once again
                 trance on the studio side

<|ps|> and where do you get inspired for that?

<Khyron> for inspiration i'm kind of weird.. it hits me at weird
times and usually few and far between.. I can go 6 months
without writing a tune and then one night sit down for 10
hours straight and make something from start to finish.. I
usually get inspired from things that happen in my life and
just make the music try to fit the current mood i'm in.. for
other artists I really don't know.. most of the time I
                 listen to punk rock :)

<|ps|> what are your favorite bands then?

<Khyron> fifteen, screeching weasel, jawbreaker, J Church, Front 242,
old metallica stuff (master of puppets is brilliant) and I
also listen things like ministry, brian eno, david bowie,
and dave matthews i used to be in a punk band too

        <|ps|> as what? bassist?

<Khyron> yeah and i screamed some backup vocals too.. we had a
pretty strong local following here in cincinnati.. one time
we played a show at a guy's HOUSE and 200 damn people showed
up for it.. it was a hell of a lot of fun

<|ps|> hehe! what happened with the band

<Khyron> college.. our singer moved to minnesota and our drummer
moved up to Columbus OH to go to school.. we still get
together and jam if we're all in the same city at the same
time, but that usually doesn't happen anymore :)

<|ps|> too bad! :) are you in any other groups other than kosmic
               nowdays?

<Khyron> no, I can barely put in any time to do stuff with kosmic
                 (I havn't released a tune in a LONG time) so I don't really
do too much.. I drifted away from the scene for a long time
but lately I've been grabbing demos left and right to see
what groups and what kind of stuff is out there

<|ps|> really? what do you think of the new stuff you been getting
               then? :)

<Khyron> it's getting better.. when I first got into demos they were
really cool.. lots of design put into them and they were
really like a PROJECT instead of a bunch of effects on the
screen with some cheesy music. It was great to see what
people could pump out of a 486 back then, as processors got
better it seemed like less and less design was being put
into them and they became just 3D donut and duck with
shaded asses.. but lately i've seen some good design with a
combination of incredible code, graphics, and music all
                 tied in together

<|ps|> what about for music, you listen much to other trackers tunes?

        <Khyron> i haven't for a long time.. there's so many musicians out
now and there's no telling what to get and what not to
(and i don't have the time to get that much..) I'll always
listen to new tunes made by people i'm friends with
                 (drzachary, basehead, mellow-d) but overall i don't
                 download that much

<|ps|> so what are your plans for the future?

<Khyron> musically I don't know right now.. For the last year or so
I've mainly focused on career goals instead of musical
ones.. I plan on actually releasing some new music (it may
be tracked, but most likely .mp3 studio work) so hopefully
I won't get kicked out of kosmic due to inactivity :)

<|ps|> is there such a feature on kosmic? :)

<Khyron> contrary to popular belief, yes :)

<|ps|> hehehe what about contributing for demos? you ever did or
               though about it?

<Khyron> i did a really HORRIBLE tune for a demo called "dragon"
which had my music and GooRoo's code.. the tune was pretty
good but then my system crashed and the file got corrupted..
I had to recreate the entire tune in a very short period of
time and it just didn't turn out well :)
I hope to do some music for demos in the future.. demos are
                 cool

<|ps|> what do you think about the current trend to do 3d-only
               demos.. good/bad?

<Khyron> 3D only demos can be very cool if done RIGHT.. You can't
just have a bunch of rotating shaded stuff without syncing
it to the music and throwing in some good graphics here and
there.. in my opinion the key to a good demo is having
something that combines music/code/graphics *together* into
one big presentation.. instead of just having music in the
background, rotating 3D things here and there, and maybe a
pixel art thing in between effects.. you have to treat them
                 all as one

<|ps|> you ever been to any demoparty?

<Khyron> yep.. Assembly 94, The Party 95, and the coolest one of
                 all. Naid '96

<|ps|> what are your best memories of each one?

<Khyron> Assembly was cool because it was the first one I had ever
been to.. TP95 was cool because I won the Big Mac eating
competition, and Naid '96 was cool because I got to meet
all of the north american sceners I had been talking to on
                 irc/teleconfs for years

<Khyron> TP95 was really cool because we made a 2 week trip out of
it.. ior, siren, necros, and myself went to sweden,
denmark(tp5), and finland on that trip

<|ps|> what was teh prize for winning the big mac compo?

<Khyron> bah two free 1.5 liter bottles of coke :) I was really
hurting for money while I was there and by entering the
competition I got a free meal, that was the best part :)

<|ps|> hehe :) did you got dinner served while you were airborn?

<Khyron> yeah, but airplane food sucks

<|ps|> whats your super-secret technique to eat everything without
letting something fall down? do you put the bread on the
water cup and the desert sideways or am i doing it wrong?

<Khyron> airplane food is tough.. especially flying coach. i guess
the trick is to just eat everything as fast as you can.
the more time you spend eating the more time you have to
                 drop something on yourself

<|ps|> yeah, but how do you open the packages to start with?

<Khyron> you have to use your teeth man.. or just hope the packages
                 come open very easily

<|ps|> maybe your food carriers are diferent from ours..

        <Khyron> must be the case

<|ps|> hehe :P so are you ready for the famous demojournal pop-quiz
               contest?

<Khyron> as ready as I'll ever be..

<|ps|> 1. whats the capital of madagascar?

<Khyron> uhm.. purple motion? [ed: wrong]

<|ps|> 2. in which country are the higher concentrations of panda
               bears?

<Khyron> probably wrong, but i'll guess china [ed: right]

<|ps|> 3. who tracked music for unreal (easy one)

<Khyron> the game or the demo? :)

        * |ps| was caught.. :P

        <Khyron> well?

        <|ps|> the game!

<Khyron> the game.. siren, necros, basehead, and a few others

<|ps|> 4. whats the average life time of women in sweden?

<Khyron> hm judging by the women I saw over there they seem to all
be 25 year old hotties.. i'll go with that
[ed: lifetime! not best age! :)]

<|ps|> 5. whats the most often typed command on dos?

<Khyron> ctrl-alt-del heeh cd or dir.. could be either

<|ps|> whats your favorite demo of all times?

<Khyron> hrm.. tough one. i'd have to say amnesia by renaissance,
just because it was the first demo I ever saw and it blew
                 me away

<|ps|> how old were you back then?

        <Khyron> 13 or 14.. i don't remember

<|ps|> do you think it would have made a diference if it had crashed
on the first 2 seconds (for your life i mean..)

<Khyron> it may have.. if it did I probably would have been
introduced to the demoscene one way or another (everyone
and there mother had seen second reality when that came
out). I may have never gotten into it, we may not be
having this converation right now, hell i could be dead!

<|ps|> always think positive! :P well.. i guess this is it! i dont
               know what else to ask..

<Khyron> ask me if I'm wearing pants

        <|ps|> are you wearing pants?

        <Khyron> NO!! MUAHAHAHAH!@!!#@!# MEEPMEEPMEEP!@!@#
                 sorry.. had to

<|ps|> :) care to say hi to anyone? mom, dad, dog...

<Khyron> ofcourse.. I must say hi to the sceners i've known for way
too damn long.. basehead, ior, necros, siren, drzax,
godhead(where are you?!), b00mer, draggy, maelcum and
ofcourse the rest of the oldskool '94 #trax crew who know
                 who they are

<|ps|> well, this is it.. do some add to your urls and drop email if
               you want! :)

<Khyron> eh i have a lame web page at
http://users.choice.net/~khyron/ and people can email me at
                 khyron@kosmic.org.. peace out, bitches! :)

=====! demo !==================================================================

Mind's Evolution by Popsy Team (bugfixed party-version)
        Found at www.scene.org
3rd place at the Volcanic 5 party

        System requirements:
7MB HD, quite a lot of basemem (depends on XMS/DPMI/VCPI),
Vesa2 for colors (mode 13H for grayscale), Midas for sound.
And I suppose a fast CPU and lot of RAM (guessing requirements suck!)

        The Demo:
Well, the frenzy of parties has slowed down a bit, so we have time
to look back to see if we missed something. And indeed, Mind's
Evolution/Popsy Team is worth a review (Yes I know they made
something for Arf!party too, but I like this one better :)). Well,
you can put a LOT in 7 MB, and so they did. After a nice title pic,
        we enter a game-like 3D world with a pyramid, a castle, palmtrees,
... Sound familiar? Yep, just like Eden/Bomb! Now we can read "If
you're bored with watching bad copies of other demos: THINK
DIFFERENT!" and what follows is certainly not boring! Fancy
particles, rays, girls with toy animals, tunnels, a snowman standing
next to a house, futuristic rooms, explosions, ... The best part IMHO
is a copy of Stonehenge, with lots of particles floating around, and
the whole scene is reflected in metallic metaballs. This is really
        impressive.
There is a good mix between 3D-worlds and 3D objects, between 3D
overall and 2D effects, between fast moving parts and slower ones...
Very much variation, sometimes it goes too fast, you don't have the
time to see what's going on. Everything is very colorful, they made
excellent use of the hi-color mode (320*200 only, too bad for those
with a 21' screen). Apart from the textures, there are several
full-screen pictures. Photoshopped mainly, except maybe the
title-screen, but that changes so fast I'm not sure. At the end,
there are two scrollers: one upward with credits & funny comments
(in French), and one downward with photos of the Popsy Team members.
There are some minor glitches, like polys that doesn't connect
very well, or TV-like static that looks really artificial. And I
wish those metaballs had more & smaller polys, you can see the edges
of the triangles in the reflection now. But I noticed these things
only because the rest of the demo is really really good!

        The Music:
Just like the visual parts, the audio changes a lot. It switches
between slower, relaxed parts and faster parts with lots of drums,
yet still melodic. It doesn't fit any real-world style, it's genuine
demo-music :). There are piano's, an explosion, strings, a drum solo,
techno-like instruments, a voice sample (So good to be...) played
only once, and at the end, during the greetings & the credits, we
hear something like African percussion. Overall, it fits nicely with
        the transitions on the screen.

        Worth the download?
On csipd, some people thought this deserved a better place at
        Volcanic 5. I haven't seen the party-version, so I can't judge that,
but this bugfixed version is really worth watching. And a final
release should come "soon" :). I hope they have enough time to do
this, as they are organizing the VIP (Very Important Party, see their
invitation that placed 2nd at Arf!). There are indeed some bugs: the
VESA2 system didn't recognized my 320*200*32 (yes, even with univbe
loaded. And most other demos can use it), and quitting with esc
doesn't shut down the soundsystem correctly, so you speakers keep
repeating a tiny sound-fragment. Really annoying, as you have to
quit with esc, it doesn't stop automatically. Apart from that, it's
great. And don't let the big size scare you, it's only 4.2 MB
        zipped.
                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

        1st place: G-cube by Matrix

Huhh.. That was the only word what I could say when I had
started this one. Although there isn't lot of effects, just
2 cubes are flyin' in a box, we can see a fuckin' cool 3d
engine. When the intro started I saw a bump effect. I
tought that it's like the old 2d bumps what we could see
years ago. But it was 3d bump!! Flares were flying inside
the cube, and the lights were reflected by wall. well I
dont want to say everything about it go and see with your
own eyes! All I wanna tell you that they're the masters in
the 3d coding :) The music and the gfx isn't a big deal,
but they're nice too (the gfx was done by Nero) I think
only one thing missing: a bit more design.

        overal: 9/10 this one rocks!

[Hehh, i'm really a bad boy, this is not my review, Orion
has presented it first time in Fleur#3. I was this time the
main editor, and i have killed all my energy to the
diskmag, hopefully when you read this it is out... I wanted
to make something like a little advert to our mag with this
cut'n'paste, so muchas grazias Orion! Btw. i offer my "job"
here to anyone who likes to reviewing these little stuffz.
I'll have some exams now in the near future, and i'll pass
them, so send reviews to my _P_hoto_S_hop friend... ;) And
        don't forget to read Fleur3! - dlee]

=====! music !=================================================================

        "v" from mellow-d/fm
        Released in disk musicdisk.

One of mellow-d's previously unreleased songs. Well... now it's
released... Nice synths and soft drums drifts you away on this one.
Another electronic feeling tune. Sorry for the simple review but
like i already said previously, i am not a music reviewer type of
person. I just know what sounds good. "v" sounds excellent!
                                                                           ps
