=====! interview !=============================================================

        *** Now talking in #demojournal

        *** Los has joined #demojournal

        <Los> hehe.

        <|ps|> there, who are you?

        *** AGIcalka has joined #demojournal

        <AGIcalka> can i watch? i'll be quiet i promise :)

<Los> Mikael Kivel, graphician in scene, graphician in real life.
Born 26. june 1981 in a loving family. Now i one a small
              percent in a newmedia firm.

<|ps|> what groups are you in?

<Los> Now in recreation and planning something with trauma

<|ps|> what have you done in the past?

        <Los> in the scene?

        <|ps|> yeah

<Los> well nothing much... have been in from '95 and did one picture
to recreations asm96 demo wich SUCKED, but then i was REALLY
young. I had a small break doing computergfx and i drawed a
lot just with my hands and a real pen. then i did a comeback
with photoshop and now i am doing quite well. we were 6th at
assembly democompo and there was couple of pictures and
              textures by me.

<|ps|> when was your first contact with computers and graphical art?

<Los> somewhere about... 92 when i had my Amstrad with GEM-operating
system and there were 16 colour paint. THAT was real art :)

<|ps|> are you into art and design?

<Los> yes thats what i do for living. i've drawed my whole life.

<|ps|> what is your main inspiration?

<Los> women, love, relationships, nature and other artists. and i
just want to be the best.

<|ps|> you dont ask much do you? simple man..

        <Los> i am a perfectionist and i WILL BE best. :)
              i want to be Dannylouiemadegoddamn.

        <|ps|> hehe :)

<AGIcalka> los: where can we find your pictures ? url please

<Los> www.angelfire.com/in/miku305 is some of the newest ones.

<|ps|> so you said you started back in 92 with an amstrad. how did
               you develop?

<Los> i developed not so good cause i was not quite good grapician.
but when i got touch in 95 with 256 colours i was in heaven. i
thought i drawed the best pictures i've done!

<|ps|> what software did you use? what are you using now?

<Los> Deluxe Paint then, now Photoshop. I just love the smoothness
of airbrush and the sharpness of polygonal lasso -tool.

<|ps|> whats the big diference between 256 colors and 16bits pics?

<Los> well, the big difference is the tools and usage. they way how
i don't need to do anymore this annyoing antialiaizing pixel
by pixel. i can be more creative.

<|ps|> tmk wrote smtg about feeling better after doing an 8bit pic
               than after a 16bit...

<Los> i agree. you can do nice rasters in 8bit and it's more like
handdrawn. i don't overpaint in photoshop but the drawing is
so easy that it's allmost like doing something wrong and
              criminal.

        <|ps|> i see

        <Los> i can see too.

<|ps|> so what is your stand on the kosovo war thing?

<Los> as my new homepage says (los.planet-d.net) i don't know.
              what's yours? i don't like wars.
actually i like some wars... like..
              ...starwars.

<|ps|> so you are going to see the new starwars as soon as its out?

<Los> of course. i just love that stuff.

<|ps|> what star-wars charater do you identify yourself with?

<Los> i should see the new star trek too. i like darth vader.
darth vader is like bad guy, but i think he's a really good
person in deep in his heart. he just has some problems with
              himself.

<|ps|> aaaahhhh and so you see yourself in him?

<Los> i prefer that darth vader should do something to it.

<AGIcalka> he should fix his breathing machine :)

<Los> something like that, except i've fixed those problems. it's
like self... self... self... tell me that world.

        <Los> word.

        <|ps|> er...

        <Los> no it's not er.

        <|ps|> self-inflicted?

        <Los> BLERUGHT!

        <AGIcalka> self-destruction ?:)

        <|ps|> self-blerught sounds wrong

<Los> i think it sounds good.

*** Los is now known as selfbleru

        <|ps|> lets move forward

        <selfbleru> ok.

<|ps|> what do you think about lettuce?

<selfbleru> LETTUCE IS GREAT! I just love it! Once i read demojournal
and i saw that ps were eating lettuce for the WHOLE week.
after that i've been admiring lettuce, he's my hero.

<|ps|> wow! like... thx! :) what about beer and vodka?

<selfbleru> beer is not good. vodka is not good. i prefer women,
                    wine and good music.

<AGIcalka> besides you're too young to drink :)

<selfbleru> in finland there is no drinking or buying limits for
                    alcohol.

        <AGIcalka> really?

<selfbleru> even 12 year old kids can buy beer from anywhere.
                    yes really.

<AGIcalka> it's probably because of the cold..everyone tries to warm
                   himself etc ;)

        <|ps|> hehe

<selfbleru> also drugs are free in finland. you can buy ganja from
the nearest drugstore. you know, in finland the word
"drugstore" is different than in america.

<|ps|> so you like living in finland?

        <AGIcalka> no kidding?!

<selfbleru> no. i think i move to sweden where is law. finland isn't
                    safe place to live anymore.

<|ps|> why do you say that?

*** selfbleru is now known as Los

<Los> sorry. that was my second person. he appears sometimes.
you know, all the real artists have a second person.

<|ps|> why isnt finland a safe place to live?

<Los> i allready explained. because the drugs are free here, which
is really not true so finland remains safe place to live.

<|ps|> ... what are you planning to do in the future scene-wise?

<Los> demos, being more active. just tonight i decided some nice
co-operationplans and i think i'll join one quite famous
group. i don't want to tell the name cause it's not sure yet.

<|ps|> ok what are your favorite scene-gfxians?

<Los> Made and Danny and Visualize.

        <|ps|> why?

<Los> Made and Danny are technically perfect very near photorealism,
and visualize because of unique style and good technique.
and of course tmk is very near my heart. there are so many.

        <|ps|> hehe! :)

<Los> can't say everybody. Rembrandt is good. so is Renoir

        <|ps|> arent they dead?

<Los> yes they are. but the memory remains as metallica says :)

<|ps|> hehe, what are your musical preferences?

<Los> i've played piano since i were 10 years old. never liked
tracking. i like dancemusic and classical.

<|ps|> so what do you do on real life?

<Los> i work for newmedia, i have a small percent of a firm called
JR Internet Consultance. i am a graphician. nothing much more
but work. i think now, when it's summer i do inlineskating.

<|ps|> what about school and university? nothing like that around
               finland? or even worse... army!

<Los> yes there is army, but i am not going to do any schools
anymore. you know i have my job, i have my firm. i have my
              future plans.

<|ps|> what are your future plans? may we now?

<Los> selling the firm, starting a newone.

        <|ps|> hehe

        <Los> basically making money.

<|ps|> so what was the last demoparty you went to?

<Los> as far as i can see it was assembly98. i don't quite much like
doing parties, i like being home, drinking wine, being with my
              friends and stuff.

        <|ps|> how come?

<Los> it's more comfortable sitting on a couch with a class of wine.
there is certain kind of elegancy and if you think demoparties,
it's not quite that simple. you stink, you're drunk, you don't
have so many women around you, you feel bad, there is too loud
music wich you don't even like.

<|ps|> nice way to see things.. what about meeting the friends and
               all that?

<Los> there is a point. that's why i do just one party in a year so
              the meetings keep exciting.

<Los> anyway, i think i am going to remedy or summer encounter this
              year :(

        <|ps|> why the :( ?

<Los> hehe, cause i just said i just visit one party a year for
keeping the excitement on, but this year it's going to be two.
              asm and remedy :)

<|ps|> ah im running out of inspiration.. whats the capital of
               madagascar?

        <Los> cool. malaka

<|ps|> wrong. no it was not.

        <Los> it was a fact.

<|ps|> yes it was. its antananarivo

        <Los> darn. you are rivo

<|ps|> wanna do some pub to something before i end this silly
               interview? :)

        <Los> i think i don't have nothing to say anymore :)

<|ps|> so drop your email and lets go party!

<Los> exept my mail is nowadays miku@px.saunalahti.fi where you can
send the demojournal. i can't read firelightmail anymore.

        <|ps|> firelightmail?

<Los> miku@firelight.fi update my emailaddress in your list.

<|ps|> ok [editor: almost forgot... done now...]

        <Los> anyway. good night ps.

        <|ps|> bye! :)

        Vesa2: 320*240*32 up to 1024*768*32 (SLOW!!)
Sound: Anything supported by Indoor Music System, NOT with SBLive &
               SB 128 PCI

        The Demo:
A demo from TLS! I remember their "Mind over Matter", and the III
in the title might mean this is their third demo (really? :)). A demo
getting 2nd place at TG'99 from an experienced group, [editor: doing
one demo per year makes TLS experienced? Cyberfish i love you! :D]
I had great expectations about it. And it didn't disappoint me. The
beginning title-screen is plain ugly: grey sine waves with a white
block scrolling over them... and you can see ugly jaggies from bad
syncing to the vertical retrace. This gives the impression you are
looking at another "My First Demo/The Newbies"-demo, and it is
probably meant this way. But then the music changes abruptly, and we
start for real: the credits in a cyberspace-tunnel, a new effect (at
least for me) that looks like a colorful solar-system, a way better
title-screen with cool design-arrows,... There is a perfect mix
between 2D & (heavy) 3D (eg, water streaming down from a pipe in a
sewer, a reflecting floor showing an object in a deforming mirror)
and they have very good design-ideas. For example, before a new
effect is show, it's quickly faded in & out the previous effect,
giving a hint of what's next. And texts are always black/white,
contrasting with the flashy colors of the effects. And the white
spiral at the end is really "Wow!" The weakest aspect of this demo
is the (lack of) pictures. There are two hand-drawn charcoal
pictures from Ole Christian Oye (sounds like a Real-Life Artist),
and a nice endscreen, but that's it. Yes, I know, pixelers are a
        dying breed ... :(

        The Music:
I like this music a lot! Starting with some low bass-sounds and
higher sweeps at the fake titlescreen, a voice-sample with maniacal
laughter changes it into a rock/metal tune, fast percussion, not much
melody. Somewhere at the middle there is a change, no more drums, but
small bells and a melodic lead-instrument. It prevents the tune to
become boring, and it fits the slower parts of the demo. After a
while, the drums etc return and keep it in the rock-style till the
        end. Great.

        Worth the download?
There is only one reason not to see this: if your PC can't handle
it. I think the .nfo-file is a bit optimistic when asking for "a
Pentium", some parts run at 10 fps at a PII 350, and in 800x600x32,
it ... hmm ... is nice, yes, at a fancy 1 fps. But don't forget to
watch it again in hi-res when you have bought that new PIII :).
                                                                        Seven

[editor: sorry cyberfish but i still think ii kicks ass and iii suxx]

=====! intro !=================================================================

Bring It Back by Calodox (party-version)

        Found at www.scene.org
        1st place at Arf!party'99 64K intro compo

        System requirements:
          VESA2 512*386 or 640*400, 32MB RAM, 64K HD (could this be a
problem? :)) No win95/98, does not like EMM386.EXE (but works with
        it, at least for me)

        The Intro:
Yes, Psychic asked me to review an intro, and voila, here it is.
Bring it back, the first Plastik/LouiseLane/Kkowboy/... feelalike in
64K (the first I have seen, but I don't watch that much intros...
Feel free to change that to "yet another ... feelalike). So we have
the standard ingredients: hires, flatshaded 3D, and a few tons of
design. Nothing new, except this is, let's say, a quarter of a demo
in less than 1/20 of the space :). Good-looking parts: the blurred
spikes, the weird object, somewhat like a ball with parts of it
having a larger radius, and the little design-touches like the
intro/outro being an opening/closing box, the background of a
3D-object shown with little balls, etc. About the pictures, hmm ...
did you expect one in 64K? (OK it has been done, but it doesn't fit
        this kind of intro).

        The Music...
No GUS... *Sigh!* I'll have to wait for the final version to hear
the electronic noise that usually accompanies a design-demo(&intro?).
Psych, you were at Arf!, maybe you can tell us how it sounds? <evil
        grin from lazy Seven>

[editor: Well.. distance made the sound. He also made the sync. And
it all is amazingly well synced to every small little twitch on the
code. Every damn small detail has a sound to it and it looked AWESOME
on the big screen at Arf! Dake says a sb version is coming soon and
i can't wait to get my hands on it to see that beauty once again!
Not owning a GUS TRULY sucks!!!]

        Worth the download?
If I remember correctly, my mailbox said something like "Check out
Bring It Back/Calodox! It rules! ps", so if I don't want to lose my
well-paid job as reviewer, I better agree to that ;D. Seriously, by
this time you should know for yourself if you like this style or not.
No amazing new effects, no big 3D-worlds, no story, just DESiGN. Lots
of it. In a small size.
                                                                        Seven

        Unnatural Feelings by
        Abcug/ex-Newcomers, Ezah-Dilemma and TowerX/Astral
        <www.scene-hu.com/un_feels.zip>

This intro has a funny story, Abcug thought he stops his scene
activity and wanted to do a last intro for the volks. The intro was
ready and they thought it is good for a Mekka entry, but unfortunally
it wasnt there/was too late/wasnt shown, who cares...
After this, the intro was presented at the Hungarian Scenepage.
(www.scene-hu.com) But the authors thought they give an another try,
so they changed the HunGermany flag in the intro to a HunFrance flag,
fixed some bugs and errors, and (re)presented the intro for ARF!
Party. [editor: no it wasnt...] We found a friendly dude who said he
would enter it, but in the results what we found in demojournal 35
was nothing about the hungarian entry. [editor: there was no such
intro at the Arf!] Maybe in the final results...

The intro shows us a really slow and buggy 3d engine, and some 2d
effects. The most complex part is a 3d wall, where a laserpointer is
tpainting Ezahs graffiti style like logo. Awesome. And i like the 2d
part with the purple thingiez. The music is really relaxing, TowerX
        made a good job.

Ezah is doing an another intro this time with the Profuse guys,
will be released soon, and will be called Beeve. TowerX and Astral
is comming up next with a demo.
                                                                         dlee

runm [theme from Stigma by doomsday, composed by muffler]

An ancient and futuristic playground. Ancient forgotten gods plays
ancient and forgotten games, do you want to play?
Muffler most certainly wants to. With this dark and plasmatic tune,
filled with subtile rubbery pleasure he contributes to the game.

I dont know what style this tune is, but then again im no fan of
styling. It must be a hybrid between ambient and dark drum&bass.
The tune consists of all dark and "sphonglish" sounds. The bass is
quite rubber'ish, and when played with the mainbeat it becomes
divine. Stripped to the core, the bass and the beat itself sounds
great. With subtile effects, choirs and an even more crazy beat, the
        picture becomes quite trancy.

        Enuff said, lets get hypnotized!
