=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Sat Mar 13 14:05:36 1999

        *** avalanch_ has joined #demojournal

        <avalanch_> heej

<|ps|> ok, lets start! who are you?

        <avalanch_> okay =)
well, my real name is jordy smit, i'm 17 years old, i
live in almere, the netherlands...my handle is avalanche,
and i'm in Trinity & Style

<|ps|> for how long are you on the scene?

<avalanch_> well, i first came into contact with the scene somewhere
                    in '93 i think, but i didn't became active since '97
ofcourse, i only started doing stuff that same year :)

<|ps|> and how did you started off? what did you do?

<avalanch_> well, someone gave me a tracker, and so i started doing
music, now i also pixel or well, try to pixel anyway,
and one day i hope to be a big and mighty breakfast
cereal coder like psychic symphony...he rules.
but psst, don't tell anyone i said that

[editor: ok i wont! :D hehehe but i never coded no breakfast cereals]

<|ps|> you dont need to lick my boots :P im already interviewing
               you :P

<avalanch_> yes i know, that's why i asked you not to tell anyone :)
but i guess that doesn't have much effect
                    damn

        <|ps|> lamer! :P [ed: boot licker!!! :P]

        <avalanch_> hey, i'm a little bit slow sometimes :)

<|ps|> so you are a musician, what have you been doing lately then?

        <avalanch_> well, i competed at ambience'99...and eh...
                    uhm..

        <|ps|> that bad? :P

<avalanch_> well, let's just say i have some projects on the go :)

<|ps|> care to share them with us mear mortals?

<avalanch_> no, i don't think you are worthy of that honour yet. :)
actually, i don't have any projects going, so i can't
                    talk about them either :)

<|ps|> :P so how was ambience?

<avalanch_> well, i don't want to be negative about the
organization, because i have some friends, but....they
sucked :) but otherwise it was a damn cool party, with a
great atmosphere. ofcourse, the trinity demo DID crash
due to the organization :) and ofcourse the bigscreen
looked like a trashbag pulled over a piece of wood :)

<|ps|> it did? what did those bastards do to your clean and neat
               production this time? :P

<avalanch_> well, the demo was music timed, and the only soundcard
which was supported was sb16, the compopc had 64awe,
which apparently doesn't emulate 16bits too well, and
they refused me when i offered to drag my pc to their
                    setup :)

        <|ps|> i have a sb64awe and it emulates sb16 perfectly

<avalanch_> well, not with this demo :)

<|ps|> it did work! i already seen your demo :P i would like to add
that my name WASNT on the gtx and that i am interviewing you
               anyways...

<avalanch_> it did? well...ehm...was that the updated version or the
compo version? (not that it matters since we didn't fix
                    that particular problem) :)

<|ps|> the compo version... i think...

<avalanch_> but you're in the nfo :) so there

        <|ps|> grrrrrrrrrr
so whats up with your groups? when where they formed and
               whats their history?

<avalanch_> well, trinity was formed in november '97, and sucked
throughout early '98, untill one of our members won 1st
place at bizarre'98 :), and style, well...i have no idea
when that was founded, i'm just a musician there, they
                    don't tell me anything :)
actually, the ambience demo was trinity's first demo,
(and it sucked) but we are working on a quite good demo
                    for takeover.
plus we might release a smaller demo at a swedish
                    demoparty called birdie

<|ps|> what are the member lists of both trinity and style?

<avalanch_> ehm, geeze, are you running out of questions? :)
                    trinity: me, method.relic.d'spayre.twinsen.morph.720.
                    ryo-ohki.ics.togooz & style: me,delusio.ducks.phace

<|ps|> questions questions... whats your favorite beer brand?

<avalanch_> warsteiner and after that, grolsch

<|ps|> whats so great about holland?

<avalanch_> legal weed, booze, and cheese, either that, or
                    playboy.nl :)

<|ps|> playboy has an holland division? :P

        <avalanch_> ofcourse, doesn't portugal has one ? :)

<|ps|> no, i dont think so... havent been reading it lately :P
               must catch up! :P

<avalanch_> ofcourse you haven't...i only read it for the articles
                    btw :)

<|ps|> ofcourse! :P so lets talk music... what do you listen to? and
               what do you track?

<avalanch_> i listen to a lot of styles actually, anything in the
modern genres, like drum'n'bass, trance, goa, but i also
like tracked music in say rock style, or classical, or
                    whatever :)
as for myself, well, i track mostly trance.techno.
drum'n'bass etc, allthough i occasionally try some more
                    musical like orchestral like stuff

<|ps|> what about tracked musicians? you listen to others stuff
               much?

<avalanch_> yes, being a poor student i have no money to buy
                    records and cd's :) i listen mostly to tdr.rbi.bmp.dtn
                    kinda stuff
it would be too long a list to name all the musicians i
                    listen to in the scene

<|ps|> hehe im running out of questions... say smtg! :)

<avalanch_> smtg oh wait...that should spell something? :))

        <|ps|> yes... your dumb! :)

        <avalanch_> occasionally :)

<|ps|> ok, any hellos to ppl or smtg before i go? :)

<avalanch_> well, hello's to everyone in
                    trinity.style.rbi.destiny.bmp.bm and well...uhm...no
                    booze, no demoparty :)
                    damn, this interview sucks :)
oh wait, you're still logging? :)

[editor: is this thing on? *tap tap*]

        <|ps|> yes i am go ahead! :)

        <avalanch_> eh.. well... that's all :)

        <|ps|> bahaha

<avalanch_> usually your interviews are a bit longer...what's wrong
                    with me!? :))

<|ps|> this one was long! time flies by! :)
and i dont know what to ask.. what do you want to answer
               about?

<avalanch_> no, i think you have some sort of time stopping deathray
and you zapped me! :) well..let's think now...

<|ps|> what do you think about poland joining the NATO?

<avalanch_> i think it rocks, that way the old pulse can immigrate
to holland without a passport ;)

<|ps|> oh yeah... whats the diference between your productions and
               the best?

<avalanch_> our productions don't run on textmode... hehe
well... you expect an answer to that?

<|ps|> what do you think about design in demos?

<avalanch_> i think design is probably the most important part in
demos, next to the actual coding perhaps, otherwise for
                    non-coders, it get's rather boring (ps, that's a hint)

[editor: what do you mean thats a hint? my demos have design!!!]

        <|ps|> whats your favorite demo-effect

        <avalanch_> ehm...raytracing? :)

        <|ps|> whats your favorite demo?

        <avalanch_> ehm...i would choose soepkip 3, but i think i would
rather say astral blur / tbl :)

<|ps|> what do you think about the current state of the nlscene?

<avalanch_> the dutch is rather in an upward spiral right now, quite
a few new talented groups around

        <|ps|> better than the past?

<avalanch_> yes, definitely. well, some of it anyway

<|ps|> what do you think about the state of the scene in general?

<avalanch_> i think that it's actually improving, everybody keeps
saying how much it's dying, and yes, some of the old
garde is dying, look at hornet for example, but we do
get great new groups and archives in return, i think the
                    quality is ever increasing.
                    generally speaking

<|ps|> im running out of questions again

<avalanch_> you always run out of questions. it's just not fair
oh wait, we were talking about you

=====! demo !==================================================================

Void by The Moose Brothers (party-version)
        Found at www.scene.org
        1st place at Hype'99

        System requirements:
Nothing mentioned in nfo-file. Grmbl... 4MB HD.
Reboots while loading when using EMM, so use XMS instead.
Video: 320*200, everything from 32-bit to 8-bit emulation.
Sound: works with a SB16, no clue about which soundsystem they used.

After the video-setup, a small box with "page flipping: CPU, MMX,
FPU?" appears. This is what I think it does: the CPU can copy data
32 bits at a time. The FPU can be used to copy 64 bits at a time,
and the same goes for MMX. So, selecting FPU or MMX (if you system
supports this :)), will give you a higher framerate.

        The Demo:
After a long loading (& decompression)-time, the demo starts
without sound. We see a hybrid Elvis-like person taking a remote
control, aiming it at the hi-fi, and _then_ the music starts. Nice!
Suddenly, the door is shot open with a laser. The Elvis-clone jumps
out the windows and flies away in a UFO. Police-robots shoot and a
police-UFO starts the pursuit. This 3D-part happens quite fast, you
have to see it a few times before you understand what happens. Again,
we see a story is more fun to watch then some random objects. The
main title screen and the credits are shown, with lots of old but
good-looking effects in the background, and some good design (those
moving arrows e.g.). After this break, the UFOs are back. I won't
tell the end of the story, but the way the police stops a UFO really
        made me laugh.
The demo continues after the end of the story, with full-screen
plasma-effects and the camera moving inside a wire-frame object.
There's an effect (symmetrical moving lights, heavily blurred) that
reminds me of the rose-tool in Deluxe Paint II :). And look! A
chessboard during the greetings! Nostalgia hits when I think of
Crystal Dreams II/Triton. All respect for that oldskool demo, but I
prefer this one. Phong shaded pieces, 32-bit color... yes, the scene
HAS made some improvements in those 4-5 years, no matter what some
people say! (For people who are not so oldskool, Crystal Dreams II
was the demo that pushed Second Reality from the top of the charts.
You DO know Second Reality, don't you? ;)) After some more 3D-scenes,
we end with some photographs of someone walking at the street, into a
        building... and to the party-place!
Returning to Dos, Pmode/W throws an error at me :(.
There are not much pictures here, mostly fonts and textures.
However, I have to mention The Moose Brothers-screen, a funny
        allegory on the Blues Brothers.

        The Music:
When I read the "In Tune" music-reviews in Static Line, I notice I
don't have half the vocabulary necessary to make a good music review,
but again, I'll try. When Elvis starts the hi-fi, we hear a standard
pop/rock-sound: guitar, drums, hihat... Later on, during the credits,
there's an unnamable (for me) instrument doing a solo, which sounds
rather cheesy, almost like a chiptune. This part has a catchy melody,
and runs till the end of the story. A few vocals start another theme,
more rhythmical than the first. These two themes are repeated during
the demo, a bit modified. There is not much synchronizing, except the
way the volume changes during the double-sinus-tunnel zoom. Cewl!

        Worth the download?
(Hmm. Already 3.3K. Got to keep this short). I think the Moose
Brothers are rather new (I haven't heard of them before, don't kill
me if I'm wrong!), but there are a lot of fresh ideas in Void.
Nothing revolutionary, rather some good upgrades of older effects.
The story makes the 3D-scene interesting, and the speed of the demo
is right OK. The only minor points are the 3D without mipmapping
(rather ugly 3D-tunnels), and the massive color-use: it seems they
tried to use every single color available in a 32-bit mode. This
looks often beautiful, but I feel a more coherent color-scheme
during the whole demo would link the different parts more together.

        Overall: Download!
                                                                        Seven

Haaaaaaappy Birthday FTHR! That's all what this little intro wanna
say. He is now 2o, and they mates thought this is worth to make an
intro. It isn't a party release, so don't ask where it is released,
they made it just for fun! And they gone back to the old fashioned
Tpolm design, if you like that, don't miss this one! Big ups for the
creators, and please follow this way!
                                                                        d-lee

No no no no... It's a triple birthday intro! Fthr is 20, cloud-city
(distance's bbs) is 6 (i think...) and there is a new squarepusher ep
out! BTW: aren't scroolies supposed to go from bottom to top?!?!?!?
                                                                           ps

denied is like a vision of a dark scary future. this is a 6 minutes
and 47 seconds walk through the dark silent streets of a sodden
black metallic city. you hear drifts of conversations sidling
through the darkness, but there's a gray fog diffusing everything.
really an excellent piece of music which you should listen to,
unless you're afraid of the dark.
                                                                        nogsf

mine have never been released.
bam / Evolve.

Well it's all the same, isn't it :)?
From: Nisse Borin <thorr@algonet.se>

If a group does their own thing, then the only difference may be technical
skill. Best equals being right to who watches and creates.
Rents[dawn^3]

Is there any? ;)
Adok/Hugi

i dunno :) i think i am too lazy to do something :)
Gardner/Anakata^SR

none :)
gandalf.pulse

difference? what a difference?
i guess... my prods are really wonderfull, extraordinary, they supp such
new effects like enviromental on screen fogging etcetera, etcetera...
guess.. others best prods are really boring, every is the same, the same
virtuals on screen, the same blobz, the same Falcon's samples.. ;)
Thats the difference!

Sylvia Krasnieski was born in San Francisco, California, as the daughter of
a Polish father and a half-French, half-Italian mother. Right now she is 24
years old and one of the world's top models. "Actually I wanted to study
art", she says. "But when I won the Supermodel contest some years ago, I
decided I had no other choice than to start a professional model career. Now
I am mainly a model but use as much of my spare time as possible to study."
We asked her where she got the energy to be a model and study at the same
time. In a mysterious voice, she answered: "I got it from my leisure
activities when I was still at highschool. This gave me the happiness and
motivation I need for my career." Being asked for details, Sylvia says: "I
spent as much time as possible going out with my friends. And whenever I was
alone, I used to read my Hugi."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Peter Rosenthal was born in New York City as the son of a Jewish father and
a half-German, half-British mother. Right now he is 21 years old and already
the director of the one of the world's leading software companies. "Our
success comes from an innovative software engineering tool called NeuroCode,
whose development I have already started when I was at highschool. It makes
programming much easier because of its artificial intelligence. You just
have to implement the basic concepts, and then the program will do
everything for you based on your dialogue with it. In other words, you talk
to the intelligent program. And it anticipates your wishes." We asked him
where he got the inspiration for this innovation. He said, "I used to
discuss all kinds of problems with my friends. In this way I got a lot of
ideas. And whenever I was alone, I used to read my Hugi."

The Takeover Article Competition!

Now, there are several ways to fill an e-zine. Of course, we can write our
own ass off, and bother you with hundreds of silly articles that would fill
this website and make your day a shiny one every time you read them.

The disadvantage of this is that we get sick of writing all the articles,
and our dear webviewers will get silly, because they keep on reading our
stupid articles!

We can also ask all our friends to write articles for us. But then you
need friends which Takeover Organisers don't have too much so that\'s
not really an option either is it?

So, we came up with another idea: let's ask our dear webviewers to write
articles for us! Let's organise an "Article Competition".

Here's the rules: Write an article.

Put all your creativity in your text editor, and send it by e-mail to
to99www@takeover.nl. You can write about practically anything you want, and
you can enter the competition with as many articles as you want. Remember
that when you add some visuals with your articles, you might be pleasing
the jury very much!

The winner will be picked carefully by the Takeover Webkings, and will be
awarded with an official Takeover 98 T-Shirt (only worn twice or so, never
washed;).

All articles will be placed on this website, unless they really stink. You
are also disqualified if you stink yourself. (Sorry for this rule, but we
had to find something to block out New Order members from entering.;)

The deadline for this competition is Friday 26 March 1999.

Happy writing.

The Webkings.

Jadda jadda jadda.

                             introduction
                             ------------
so, here we go again with this stuff =) as you all know
astrosyn`97 was an really successfull party which was visited by at
least 400 scene ppl and we want to organise the sequel of it. last
time we had some nice releases here from top polish sceners and some
foreign guests for amiga and pc. now it`s time to celebrate scene
tradition again and we can show you how to organise an REAL party
without lamers playin` 3d games, without internet network around and
hundreds of lamas tryin` to connect to party irc server, without bad
atmosphere. it`s astral syndrome, spring opening and of course most
important polish demo scene festival of the year. so, are you
interested?

                           when and where?
                           ---------------
astrosyn`2 will be held in Koszalin, north western side of Poland on
third weekend of march - 20-21st, 1999. party place is a big sports
hall on raclawicka 15-17 street (property of Technical University of
Koszalin). Door will be opened on Saturday at 6 a.m. and will be
closed on Sunday`s afternoon at 3 p.m.

                               features

- no dance/disco music listeners environment are allowed at the
