I had my final semester exam on friday. Whee!
New semester starts on monday. DOH!

Replay of gus information since i kind of forgot to put the url
last week. oopsie! :D Sorry abour that!
The intro of the week has been removed due to lack of intros to
be reviewed. (aswell as reviewers) So now its only interview, demo,
        music and quote.
Hugi#14 should be coming out sometime next week and you may find
some original advertisers for it on the commercial break section so
don't come and say i didn't warn ya!
Volcanic party was held this weekend aswell so some results should
be out next week! Until then enjoy one more issue of demojournal and
        cya all next week.

Oh yeah! And scene.org is back up so you might want to upload some
productions. Trebel is getting the pieces together and will be open
for buisness aswell soon! Stay tunned.
                                                                           ps

[editor: Er... I kinda forgot to put the page url last week, so
here is Roel's message again for your reading pleasure. Sorry!]

I'd like to inform you guys that we've got a few (kinda scene
related) things on our WWW site that might interrest some of you:
        1) All the GUS driver sources (legally obtained from Gravis). If any
of you would feel active, please have a look at them.
        2) A GUS PnP WDM driver (CoDec only) for Windows 98/NT 5.0 which
works great with games and has full support for M$'s softsynth and
DOS box SB emulation. So all functionality except for
           GFA-1/InterWave MIDI playback is present.
        3) A GUS MAX driver hack for rev 2.1 GUS MAX cards for Windows 95/98
which works great with games like e.g. Quake 2 and StarCraft. This
again is a CoDec only hack (based upon the standard WSS driver)
but it is quite an improvement and of course also adds SB DOS-box
emulation. Support for GUS MAX rev 1.7/1.8 cards and for the GUS
           Classic Daugtherboard will follow soon.
        4) An extensive troubleshooting section for all GUS cards
        5) Info about our commercial Utopia Soundbank and of course a free
"try-ware" version of our soundbank called "Utopia Lite".

Scene.org is finally back online! Might be a good idea to upload
        the demos they missed...

Halcyon has made a new intro, Hplus. Get it from
www.halcyon.scene.org [ed: hplus was released at tp8!!]

Some oldskool sceners (from Xography, remember their Elements?)
have released a small (10.6 MB zipped) freeware game, M.I.S.C.
        It's a realtime 3D space-strategy game in hi-res & hi-color.
        Available at http://i31www.ira.uka.de/misc.
System requirements, screenshots etc are listed there too.
                                                                        Seven

=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Sat Feb 20 19:59:25 1999

        *** nogsf has joined #demojournal

        <|ps|> good morning

        <nogsf> hello hello :)

<|ps|> so who are you? :)

<nogsf> well, i'm one of the few girls in the scene, also a musician,
and i come from norway.. that's put short, i guess :)

<|ps|> how does your ID look like? :)

        <nogsf> id? :)

<|ps|> id-card... you know.. with the photo and name and that stuff!

        <nogsf> oh :) well i've only got a passport and a school-id ;)

<|ps|> i see... ok! what does nogsf mean then?

<nogsf> well, in norwegian it's "noe overnaturlig greit som flyr",
which translates to "something extraordinary nice which
flies" ... don't ask me just why i chose those words, but i
was 14, and i'd just traveled by plane for the first time,
as well as started tracking =)

<|ps|> how did you start tracking btw?

<nogsf> well.. i were frequenting a few bbs's.. one of them scene..
and one day i found my brother playing around in a program
                he'd downloaded..
                ft2.06..

<|ps|> so you killed your brother and played with ft yourself?

        <nogsf> :D you could say so ;))
anyway, i'd seen some ppl on that scene bbs talking about
tracking, i realized that was what my brother was doing, and
i wanted to try it myself.. and well.. i continued, i guess
                i was hooked ;)

<|ps|> :P now hold on a minute.. your going too fast... since when
               are girls on bbs's?

<nogsf> :D there've always been girls around.. even in the old warez
scene! but we've always been few..
i've been bbsing since early 1995..
i'm currently cosys at a bbs nearby :)

        <|ps|> cool! what name?

        <nogsf> skyline bbs.. :)

<|ps|> ha! :) back to tracking... so you got hooked on doing music...

        <nogsf> yes :)

<|ps|> go on... it isnt that simple...

<nogsf> hmm.. well perhaps not :)
the first tune i did was a remix sorta of final countdown ;)
                really REALLY sucky..

        <|ps|> final countdown? :P

<nogsf> but i knew tracking was something i wanted to do.. so i kept
trying and trying to track something which'd sound at least
                reasonably "nice"..
                yeah ;)
i can assure you that you do NOT want to hear it ;)

<|ps|> hehe! :P ok... what kind of music do you enjoy tracking then?

<nogsf> anything :) when i started, i just made stuff which sounded
nice.. as i got better, i tried to make different styles..
so far i've made goa, ballads, ambient, chip, demomusic, and
a lot of music which i'm not about to try classifying..

<|ps|> yeah, but do you have any favorite style?

<nogsf> no. it's much easier to ask me what i don't like, because i
love music, not just one style..

<|ps|> humm... what dont you like then?

<nogsf> well, local music styles like trnderrock, dansband, and
well.. that unintelligent stuff they play on the radio all
the time, stuff like eh.. i don't even remember what they're
                called :) bombay or something.
i don't listen to the radio very often, nor watch tv ;)

<|ps|> hehe, so what do you do on real life then? besides not
hearing radio and not watching TV? :P

<nogsf> :D well i play the violin, got orchestra rehearsal twice a
week + violin lesson once a week.. in the weekends i'm out
with my friends mostly, cabin trips, parties, a seminar or
two with one of the orchestras..
sometimes my weeks are filled, other times they're not, then
i try to catch up on my sleep ;) ever since i stayed up for
74 hours straight at a computer party last summer, i've
needed 50 hours of sleep.. but i haven't had time to catch
                up yet ;)

<|ps|> i see you got your whole life based down on music!
               music junky! :P

        <nogsf> yes! :)

<nogsf> well i've spent around 11 years of my life on music so far ;)
                -
i'm not about to quit now :)
also i've met my best friends through music ;)

<|ps|> :) ok, time for important question! where are the girls in
               the scene?

<nogsf> well.. spread around actually. there are a few everywhere,
but there are so many more guys, so you don't notice at
first ;) i haven't heard of any girl coding so far but i
don't doubt that somewhere there's a girl who knows her way
around pascal,c,c++,asm, you name it ;)

<|ps|> well... my calculations indicate there is about 1 scene girl
               per scene country!
coding sucks! no wonder no girl wants to have a go! :P

        <nogsf> hoho :D

<|ps|> they are smart enough to avoid all the frustration and hours
drinking coke in front of a blue screen! :P

<nogsf> i want to learn coding ;) i have actually done some coding
once ;) years ago.. in qbasic ehahea.. and the only thing i
did was make music anyway, so i guess i'd already made up
                my mind ;)

<|ps|> i know ppl will flame me for this but...
               DONT DO IT!!! SAVE YOURSELF!!!!

        <nogsf> :D

        <|ps|> really!!! :P
ok, lets talk groups, who are the lucky ones to have your
               name on their members-list?

<nogsf> well i'm a member of norwegian demo groups ewox, and trax..
also of the music group level-d :)

<|ps|> tell us how where each ones formed and their members...

<nogsf> the first group i was in, tundra, passed away silently
somewhere between the summer of 97 and the autumn of 98..

        <|ps|> RIP

<nogsf> well in ewox we have beren, daelos, finrod, ixian, int19h
and me, also a girl who pixels, but we haven't heard from
her in ages.. i don't know much about how ewox was formed,
since i was asked to join a while after their founding :)
trax is a group which existed quite a few years ago (i was
told 11 or so.. but that might've been exagerated i think..)
and was restarted a year ago.. i'm not really sure how many
                members we have ;)

        <|ps|> and level-d..

<nogsf> level-d is the group i joined this summer, actually :) a few
days after my birthday.. we've gotten quite a few changes in
our memberlist so i guess i'll forget some ;] but at least
we have slackjaw, virago, orion, big bear, workbench, echo,
sprinkle, keyg and me in there..
level-d mainly focuses on ambient/newage, which is the style
i tend to do the most lately :)

        <|ps|> whats your favorite color?

        <nogsf> blue :)

<|ps|> ever been to a demo party?

<nogsf> ye =) the first one was the gathering 1996.. but i was
there for only 24/48 (don't remember anymore) hours..
i've also been to a few local ones..
distance 97 and distance98a, and also today i was at a party
organized by trax. "trax - first edition"

<|ps|> what DO you remember from that party? any special thing?

<nogsf> well i remember feeling lonely, i went there by myself
without a computer, and i didn't had time to organize
meeting up with any of my friends.. a friend of mine found
me tho, and also i made a few other friends..

<|ps|> how was that trax gathering then?

<nogsf> the first thing which happened was this: i was standing in a
queue to get my ticket and get inside.. and some tv crew
comes to the site (later i learned they were looking for
girls in the vast crowd of guys.. so they spot me, set up a
camera 4m away from me and film me standing in the queue,
                without even asking!

<|ps|> did you killed them? :P

        <nogsf> unfortunately not ;)

        <|ps|> so what happened?

<nogsf> well nothing. they just filmed for a minute or so, and went
                on into the party hall..
the trax party was cool, although i spent most of the time
                working in the canteen :D

<|ps|> how many ppl were there?

<nogsf> well i registered around 50 when i was there, and when i
left we had 80 registered ppl and around 20 crew (me and my
bro among them) who were not on the list..

<|ps|> that was a good party i think then! :)

<nogsf> yes! :) they're not done, the party doesn't end until
wednesday.. but i'm going on vacation tomorrow ;))

        <|ps|> ah! even better! :)
how is it like beeing a girl on the scene?

        <nogsf> yes :)
being a girl in the scene is weird.. :)

        <|ps|> why? stupid question.. :P

        <nogsf> nah don't worry :D it's a good one really.
most people just assume that you're someone's girlfriend

<|ps|> which is not you case correct? :)

<nogsf> no :D i was single at the time when i joined the scene.
so they all think that we don't know shit about what the
scene is anyway ;) on irc it's worse tho :D most people
refused to believe me when i said i was a girl, but i'm not
about to change to a more feminine handle just because of
                that.

        <|ps|> bahahah

<nogsf> cause you get a lot of shit too, being a girl.

<|ps|> like what? everyone hitting on you all the time? :D

<nogsf> hahah yes :D well just try nicking yourself with a girl's
name on irc some time ;)

        <|ps|> :P i have seen the results... :P

<nogsf> yes. ;) but most of the time it's really cool :)

<|ps|> when i was using psychic_s as handle most ppl though psychic
               was psy-chik :D

<nogsf> ah damn..:] can't've been fun.

<|ps|> the problem is some still do! :P

<nogsf> :) but part from those "incidents" it's actually quite ok to
be a girl in the scene ;)

<|ps|> anyways... what does the scene mean for you? :)

<nogsf> well i've met quite many of my friends through the scene, i
always have a lot of fun being around them, going to demo
parties.. and making music, my passion :)
being a scener also did something for my self-esteem,
because i could be something, be someone..

<|ps|> humm... thats an interesting way of putting things

[editor: thats one damn interesting way of putting things!]

<nogsf> i've met so many ppl from all over the world, i've also met
quite a few of them rl lately :)

<|ps|> you have any non-scene friends or that arent much into it?

<nogsf> yes :) none of my friends from school or from the orchestras
are into the scene at all.. they only know what i've told
                them :)

<|ps|> how did they reacted when you first started to explain things?

<nogsf> well :D some of my friends thought i'd gone nuts ;)
others said like "but aren't all those computer guys geeks
anyway? why bother to hang around with them?"

<|ps|> what about telling them you did music with your computer? ever
tried that? i heard its not that easy aswell.. :P

<nogsf> well i told them that too ;)

        <|ps|> same reactions? :P

<nogsf> some of them had trouble seeing why i wanted to spend so
much time on making music too ;)

<nogsf> yes :) but some of them were really fascinated and i think
if i was a better teacher i could actually convert a few of
                them ;)

<|ps|> hehe! :) what are your plans for the future then?

<nogsf> well i want to get better at tracking, try to meet as many
of the #traxers as i can, gotta study so i get better
                grades ;)

        <|ps|> what are you studying?

        <nogsf> well i'm in college/upper secondary, it's my 11th year of
school.. next year is my last before uni..

        <|ps|> well, break a leg then! ;)

<nogsf> besides the subjects we HAVE to take, i have physics, maths,
and russian :) hehe thanks ;)

<|ps|> russian? :P why do you need that for?

        <nogsf> well it's cool :)

<|ps|> you know any russian sceners? :)

<nogsf> yes :) not very well yet, but still :)
i don't know enough russian to talk about anything tho ;)
i've had russian for two years in school now, tho, and i'll
have it next year too :)

<|ps|> bahahah, what about spanish or french? languages not your
               strong point? :)

        <nogsf> :D i have french in school too ;)
last year now.. unfortunately :/ i didn't have enough hours
left to choose french next year, cause i'm also taking
                information technology next year..
i can't say anything useful in french either, and that's
                bothering me ;)

        <|ps|> hahahah! :)

<nogsf> i've had french for four years you know ;)
                and still, nothing!

<|ps|> you should practise some... its quite easy when you
               practise... :)

<nogsf> i can read it and understand most of it, but when it comes
to forming my own sentences.. . ;) i've been neglecting my
schoolwork for four years too.. yes :)

<|ps|> yah... understanding is the easy part! :P

<nogsf> i guess we're kindof waay off the original interview here
                tho :D yes! ;)

<|ps|> i dont know what to ask once again... time for
               demojournal's 5 killer quiz-show contest

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Radikal by Astral (party-version)
        <ftp://demo.cat.hu/scene/DEMO.'99/Contest.'99/DEMO/ast-rad.zip>
        1st place at Contest'99

        System requirements:
        P166, 32MB RAM, 2MB HD, 640*480*256 mode
(Nothing mentioned about kind of soundcard, works on SB16 ...)

        The demo:
Wow! One of the first demos of '99, and I hope there will be more
of this quality. It uses a hi-res-but-low-color mode, which probably
accounts for the fast framerate: you need to copy only a quarter of
the data from a hi-res 32-bit mode. Despite the low amount of colors,
this demo looks very good. In fact, it looks a lot like Kkowboy, only
better (in my opinion, that is). There are eg. backgrounds that
consist of more than just lines. Not hand drawn, but still
good-looking (The one with the x-ray seahorse is really cool).
Other "Kkowboy-on-speed"-effects: wire-framed metaballs, but now
the raster is surrounding the blobs, anti-aliased wire-only 3D
scenes, a very impressive (& fast) tunnel, and a ball with moving
splines (this one looks a bit like an ameaba). And of course the
usual stuf: plasmas (a short name for all kind of moving
        backgrounds:)), a virus, flying between a texture-mapped floor &
ceiling, and even a new effect: raindrops sliding down the window.
Nice! Even the music reminds me of Kkowboy: it starts quite
electrical, Dune-like, but a bit faster and more melodic. Later there
are more drums etc. Fitting with the style of the demo, indeed, but
we don't expect anything less nowadays :)

        Worth the download:
The only bad points are the flashing at the end, which breaks the
feeling a bit, and the same texture that's used several times. They
should have made some others, especially when you see they had lots
of space left. The whole thing is less than 2 MB large! The demo at
the second place of Contest 99 was over 5 MB large, so we see size
doesn't matter :). Maybe some people will think Astral copied
Kkowboy, but I think that's not true. Radikal shows what you can do
today when you throw that hi-color out the window, going for speed &
resolution, without losing the design. They may be influenced, but
when the result is better then the original, I can only rejoice that.
I could spend some more lines about hi-rez versus hi-color, speed
versus design etc, but you should just get it & see for yourself.
There's also a final version coming, this party-version is "made in
only 4 weeks and is maybe 70% of the final". Can't wait to see that
        final. Hurry up, Astral!
                                                                        Seven

=====! mod !===================================================================

        "Existing" by Mick Rippon
        www.hornet.org (searh on mick rippon)

The tune starts with an echoing melody diverging from a guitar
sound to a piano. The sounds just wave from side-to-side brilliantly
starting to fade as the song develops. Leads are added to the mood
and it all wabbles itself until a drum snare breaks the melody into
a music. Brilliant work of the volume and positioning of the
instruments so that you never get noise but everything fitting
together. The song keeps going with some soft guitar stabs and
eventually fades away. I really love the beggining of the tune. The
rest is plain normal stuff to me...
All samples by the man itself. This tune goes back to 96. Not much
        more i can say. Enjoy.
                                                                           ps

Sylvia Krasnieski was born in San Francisco, California, as the daughter of
a Polish father and a half-French, half-Italian mother. Right now she is 24
years old and one of the world's top models. "Actually I wanted to study
art", she says. "But when I won the Supermodel contest some years ago, I
decided I had no other choice than to start a professional model career. Now
I am mainly a model but use as much of my spare time as possible to study."
We asked her where she got the energy to be a model and study at the same
time. In a mysterious voice, she answered: "I got it from my leisure
activities when I was still at highschool. This gave me the happiness and
motivation I need for my career." Being asked for details, Sylvia says: "I
spent as much time as possible going out with my friends. And whenever I was
alone, I used to read my Hugi."

Peter Rosenthal was born in New York City as the son of a Jewish father and
a half-German, half-British mother. Right now he is 21 years old and already
the director of the one of the world's leading software companies. "Our
success comes from an innovative software engineering tool called NeuroCode,
whose development I have already started when I was at highschool. It makes
programming much easier because of its artificial intelligence. You just
have to implement the basic concepts, and then the program will do
everything for you based on your dialogue with it. In other words, you talk
to the intelligent program. And it anticipates your wishes." We asked him
where he got the inspiration for this innovation. He said, "I used to
discuss all kinds of problems with my friends. In this way I got a lot of
ideas. And whenever I was alone, I used to read my Hugi."
