          Damn i'm bored! I can't believe i even wrote a former ending! :P
I hate formalities... Their so... formal!
Holly cow, i just been reading demojournal #1. Damn it sucks! :D
Why the hell did i make a number 2 i wonder... Anyways, it's been
nearly 6 months now, believe it or not. It seems just like yesterday
for me. :P Always something needed to be improved for the next issue.
All the moving and improving and new releases and all that stuff.
What basically happened was that i was always trying to pull off the
perfect demojournal next week! Damn... 25 weeks! Thats one
        damn big waste of time.
          Oh well...
Oh yeah, about #21, some people have been asking about that one
issue... It is a collectors item, since it wasn't released on the
mailing list. You can still get it from the normal ftp's and from
        our homepage!
                                                                           ps

Roel de Wit had this to say:
        /
I'd like to inform you guys that we've got a few (kinda scene
related) things on our WWW site that might interrest some of you:

        1) All the GUS driver sources (legally obtained from Gravis). If any
of you would feel active, please have a look at them.
        2) A GUS PnP WDM driver (CoDec only) for Windows 98/NT 5.0 which
works great with games and has full support for M$'s softsynth and
DOS box SB emulation. So all functionality except for
           GFA-1/InterWave MIDI playback is present.
        3) A GUS MAX driver hack for rev 2.1 GUS MAX cards for Windows 95/98
which works great with games like e.g. Quake 2 and StarCraft. This
again is a CoDec only hack (based upon the standard WSS driver)
but it is quite an improvement and of course also adds SB DOS-box
emulation. Support for GUS MAX rev 1.7/1.8 cards and for the GUS
           Classic Daugtherboard will follow soon.
        4) An extensive troubleshooting section for all GUS cards
        5) Info about our commercial Utopia Soundbank and of course a free
"try-ware" version of our soundbank called "Utopia Lite".

=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Fri Feb 12 23:31:40 1999

        *** _ArraKiS_ has joined #demojournal

<|ps|> b'jour. so, tell us who are you...

        <_ArraKiS_> i'm a french guy, i am 22, and i'm a little coder. the
only thing i did you can know is my DiskMag DefCoN Mag

<|ps|> you have an url for that?

<_ArraKiS_> yes, of course: http://defcon.citeweb.net (we are
                    redesigning it at all times)

<|ps|> and what do you do on real life?

<_ArraKiS_> i am studying informatik (i'm too lazy to work ;)

<|ps|> what groups are you in?

<_ArraKiS_> my group is very unknown (k!prod), but i am also member
of a great label (just4fun spirit) called Arf!Studios

<|ps|> you were actually the founder of arf! tell us about it please

<_ArraKiS_> well, it was a year ago, i was very disapointed about the
bad mood of the sceners, so with some friend we found
Arf!, a kind of label for the fun spirit. Now we are
about 130 people from more than 24 groups... it seems it
was a great idea :) but for more complete infos on that,
just check the web site : http://ArfStudios.cjb.net

<|ps|> dig deeper! why did it start? what ticked you to do it?

<_ArraKiS_> The idea came to me during the Saturne 5, 'cause when
they saw how catastrophic it ran, many groups decided
not to release their productions and the main reason of
some was "no prize no demos"
i though that demomaking was for fun, not for prizes!

<|ps|> and there was not much rejoicing at all...
so what are you doing knowdays?

<_ArraKiS_> well, i do not have lot of freetime (raaah studies), so
i try to code a bit... but really just a bit. And i take
                    good time (eating, ...etc)

<|ps|> ok, and the crucial question: when is defcon#3 out?

        <_ArraKiS_> hehe, that's "your question" :)
i hope one day, i'm working on it, but i have no time, i
am the laziest guy on earth, .... :)

<|ps|> arrakis: you organizing arf!party aswell.. tell us about it...

<_ArraKiS_> like we saw that the "arf!spirit" was loved, we'll
organise a party with the same spirit the fun, before the
rest but we are new to organising such a party .. we'll
see, if it's a great party, next year, we'll do another..
                    bigger

<|ps|> some ppl say arf!party is bunch of ppl pretending to be
               friends, what do you say?

<_ArraKiS_> hehe, yes it's like this. and like friends we have
"bad moods" some times :) (like yesterday by night)

<|ps|> what happened yesterday at night?

<_ArraKiS_> kind of fighting on a politik subject :) we are only
humans ... [ed: speak for yourself! im not human!]

        *** PierroZ80 has joined #demojournal

        <|ps|> arrakis: are you gay?

<_ArraKiS_> ps: ahaha, not at all.... are you ?

<|ps|> arrakis: what do you expect for arf!party?

<|ps|> pierro: ill rape my brother with a fork to make him drive me
there, if arrakis promises to release defcon#3 that is...

<_ArraKiS_> ps: I can't promise this, and you know

<|ps|> arrakis: sure you can... if i go to arf!party you release
               defcon#3 at arf!party [ed: simple! :)]
               simple!

<_ArraKiS_> ps: whouahahaha that's really easy in fact :)

<|ps|> arrakis: do we have a deal?

<_ArraKiS_> ps: i won't finish defcon for arf, it's sure.... do not

[editor: shutup! dont ask silly questions! :P]

<|ps|> arrakis: how many cities are there in france?
               whats the meaning of life?
what do you think about design?
               is design, high-res or mood?

<_ArraKiS_> at least 3 Lyon, Paris and Nice

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Yume by INF (final version)
        <ftp://demo.cat.hu/scene/Demos.'98/Theparty.'98/DEMO/infy2rel.zip>
        5th place at TP8

        System requirements:
32 MB ram, 6 MB HD, "fast CPU" (P2-266 or higher).
Works with every videomode, from textmode to VESA2. [ed:SDD advised!]
More free ram will increase the soundquality. [ed:Up to 22khz stereo]

        The review:
Two weeks ago, Psychic asked me to review Yume 2. I happily
downloaded the bugged party-version, and had one hell of a time to
get it running (pressing ESC during the MPG-decompression was the
only way to avoid an out-of-memory error). As a result, the review I
made didn't do justice to the final version, so I had to redo it. So,
download infy2rel.zip, after reading this final review of the final
version :) [ed: join the club! had to bug krav and tmk 100x for it!]

        The Demo:
This demo is very video-clip-like. This is mainly due the vocals
and the dancing girl that is superimposed over several scenes. Looks
nice, but I read on csipd she's a Japanese virtual idol (ala Lara
        Croft, only more realistic).
There are several "pretty girl face"-pictures, most handdrawn, some
retouched photos, and some good raytraced scenes from 3D-Addict (I
like his work, I use one of his pictures as win-background). There's
a good mix between 2D/3D effects. The 3D-scenes are not very complex
        but well done, a Quake-like tunnel, a deformed escher-knot, a virus
... There's a city, but it looks much bigger than it is because they
used bitmaps of buildings as background. [ed: its supposed to be an
harbor :P they ran out of time!] Sometimes the perspective is
(intentionally) wrong, as in the room with the 3 metaballs with
mixing textures. Backgrounds are eye-pleasing and colorfull, some
plasmas, a recursive-rotating fractal (does anyone know a shorter
        name for that effect?).
Further there are pictures morphing into each other, old effect but
still nice, lights forming flower-like forms, greetings in a rather
unreadable font... [ed: its readable! some names...] The music is an
MPG, as you might have guessed from the vocals. It's some kind
of Japanese rock-song, with heavy drums & electrical guitars.
[ed: jpop star nanachan. so i read infofiles, sue me!] Its fast pace
fits the speed of the demo well, and most effects are somewhat
synchronyzed to the music. I don't understand Japanese, so I've no
clue what the song is about. [ed: xixi means "to piss" in portuguese]
The final .nfo final says "everything is copyrighted their
respective owners", but I don't think just mentioning this means you
have permission to use the song... [ed: sure you do, they fully
        credited the jpop singer!]

        Worth the download ?
Good points: nice contrasting colors, fitting music with vocals
that add much to the demo. Beautiful pictures, a mix of 2D/3D
effects, some fine transitions. The dancing-girl-clip is repeated but
not too often. Special attention for the 3 metaballs with different
textures, and the morphing pictures. Nice! [ed: metaballs RULE!]
Bad points: Looking at it from a code-point of view, there are few
new things in it. Most effects are quite common, and do not justify
the rather heavy system requirements. The music is an existing MP3,
which is pre-decompressed in memory instead of on-the-fly. Some
        people don't like MP3 & video-clips, others think it's the future.
        Judge for yourself ...
                                                                        Seven

        Psychic Symphony point of view:
Lots of cute girls by that cute-girl fanatic TMK. 3D scenes aren't
very special but if you notice the ridiculous amount of layers of
blur everywhere you'll soon realize why is it so slow... The video,
the music, the pics, they all get together and fit so well which
totally rocks! Final demo pic won GFX compo and middle Raytraced pic
won Raytrace compo. I wonder what that means... Another thing i need
to mention is the feeling of how everything falls together, it
creates a great atmosphere very like "303" and "hyperventilation" IMO
Last of all i must point out how besides beeing too big and
taking too long to unencode the mp3 and all that stuff, that it was
almost everything done at the party place and that the guys ran out
of time. (obviously!) Anyways, this is definitly one awesome demo!
Oh yeah! INF are all from Norway (i think) which is nice because you
don't see much norwegian scene activity lately! Hail to Poison, TMK,
        Krav and 3d-addict.
                                                                           ps

=====! intro !=================================================================

        "Frontpage+" by Suspend
        1st at Satellite'98 64k intro compo

Code by pointman, logos by Rappid, 3D scenes from soulless and
        music from x-ceed.
The intro starts off with some small pre-calc (Surprise!) and jets
off into a good looking 2D effect of 2 textures overimposed
introducing the intro. It's all vesa2 and you can tell when a 3D
object with spikes and multi-colored lightsources at the peaks passes
by to reveal the title: "Frontpage". Music is the normal demo-techno
bleep bleep, a 3D scene starts, and then shifts into a realtime
raytrace of a human figure with 2 lightsources (R and G). Some more
3D scenes and real-time raytraces this time with 3 lightsources (RGB)
preced. Some small porno pics also appear and to put it short, that's
it! I must mention some good design touches here and there like on
this one 3D scene where some horizontal and vertical lines would
intersect and give us a small replica of the main 3D scene, but the
lines moving smoothly and synced to the music. That was the best scene
of all the intro for me. (i don't like raytracing very much) The
raytraces look impressive but since i don't know much on real time
traces i better not go any further!
I generally don't like intros since they are so limited and mostly
only have GUS support but this one is a good intro.
                                                                           ps

I already thought that the prodigy-styled wild breakbeats are dead
but no way, Shorty really makes you move with this release. In the
beginning there are some abient strings but the main theme is an
aggressive and strong beat mixed with insane bassline and
house-organish melodies. It really rocks, I've just listened it
about 4 times thru and still it gives nice and fresh wibes...
Download it and play with lots of bass (and treble too :).
