=====! interview !=============================================================

        *** big_bear has joined #demojournal

        <|ps|> good morning

        <big_bear> merry xmas!

        *** Scorpik has joined #demojournal

<|ps|> ok... so lets start... who are you big_bear?

        <|ps|> b4 xmas! :D

        * Scorpik thinks that big bear went to ask his mother who he is... he
is taking too much time :)

<big_bear> I'm a scene musician and I'm in Level-D and in Fake That.
Besides doing music I also code a little. In real life I'm
studying computer science at the University of Bern in
                   Switzerland

        *** claudi- has joined #demojournal

        <big_bear> told ya I'm tired :)

<|ps|> big: your interview! you kick starngers!
               and how old are you?

        <big_bear> claudi-, sorry :)

        *** claudi- was kicked by big_bear [ed: bad-ass big_bear!]

        <big_bear> I'm 24

        <Scorpik> no way!

        <big_bear> sure way! :)

<Scorpik> my neighbours told me that you are 12!

<|ps|> big: you have a pic of you with your girlfriend (if you dont,
one with only your girlfriend is enough!)

<big_bear> they simply think I've got the same age as you

        <Scorpik> :)

<big_bear> ps, nopes. even if I had one it would be a picture of my
                   ex-gf, actually :)

<|ps|> things not going well? :P

<big_bear> depends... I've been out with some girls three times this
week. that wouldn't have been possible with a gf ;)

        <Scorpik> no answer....

<|ps|> uuhhhh... big: so you make music... hei you were up against
scorpik at wired98. what happened on that one?

<Scorpik> yeah...he was better than me :/ But I have bought a sniper
rifle and it will never happen again :)

<big_bear> ps: yes I was. well what happened? I somehow won :)

<|ps|> big: what do you though of scorpik's tune?
scorpik: what do you though of big_bear's tune?

<big_bear> scorpik got 2nd. I was _very_ surprised to beat him,
                   actually

<Scorpik> very nice tune!!!! I love it!

<big_bear> ps, I liked it very much. I've been a fan of scorpik's
                   tunes long before that!
Scorpik, you're just too honest :-P

<|ps|> scorpik: your supposed to say his tune sucks and that it was
all organizers fault!!! no cash for you now...
big: what is this? liking each others music? no no no... this
               can't be...

<Scorpik> refresh your mind...I took money from 1st place of video
                  compo :)))

<|ps|> scorpik: to make up for fucked up big-screen fucking up your
               raytrace? ;)

<big_bear> ps, yes I organized that to keep him calm :)

<Scorpik> ps: yeah...it was funny...I make blue sky with snow and
on the big screen I see dark night with stars :)

<|ps|> big: tell us about your groups... level-d and fake that
               scorpik: hehe! :) its a miracle! :P

<Scorpik> ps: yup...but let's hear what big bear has to tell us
                  about Level-D :)
bear: what does this D mean?

<big_bear> okay Level-D first: It's a music group dedicated to make
quality ambient/newage styled tunes. It was founded about
1 year ago, I think by Virago. news are that we're going
more into the real music direction with Level-D Records.
Scorpik: the D? I have NO idea :D

<|ps|> big: know is the chance to do some free-advertising
               (HINT HINT)

<Scorpik> big: yeah big chance for you, now! Do some advertising...
                  like cute blondies call....0700 000 0801 etc :)
we will be rich soon:) [ed: its 0700 6969 069 actually! =)]

<big_bear> right! fire up your browsers and surf to
                   www.xs4all.nl/~virago or www.level-d.com
                   (as soon as it's finished)!!!

<big_bear> Scorpik: nah, you would have to go offline to call there;)

        <Scorpik> :)
big: when you will finish your next CD under LevelD label?

<|ps|> hehe what about fake that?

<big_bear> Scorpik: next will be a demo CD in march.
ps, about Fake That: it's a swiss demo group, partly
built on the remains of Suprise!Productions swiss section.
we're really kinda inactive at the moment and I don't know
when it's gonna change ;) our main work is the
organization of a local swiss party called BuenZli

        <|ps|> oh yes buenzli

<big_bear> ps, and btw we have many ex-maineditors of the diskmag
PAiN :) you've already heard of buenzli?

<|ps|> pain is searching for a new editor right? you know anything
about that? yes i heard of buenzli! :) i know about
everything! :) im the demojournal thingie guy
tell us how you started into the demoscene (that should keep
               you busy...)

<big_bear> yes, it seems like Cockroach and Iquito share the
                   maineditor job right now
I think I started to do music on the Amiga in '89, but at
the time I was more into warez. When I bought a PC '91 I
lost contact with the scene for some time. In early '94 I
joined a PC group called Touchforce, later LSP, then
MozICart (left them all pretty soon), and then Fake That
and finally Level-D. I kinda worked my way up
                   (career man ;))

        <|ps|> hehe LSP is surprise!productions ?

<Scorpik> better tell me when you'll stop making music, bcoz I want
to win some music compos :)

<big_bear> ps. no it was some _really_ lame swiss group (shouldn't
                   have mentioned it I guess :D )

<|ps|> where is s!p then? i dont see it... :)

<big_bear> Scorpik: ha! now that I've taken away all your self esteem
you won't enter a compo ever again :=P

<|ps|> scorpik: name 3 diferent ways how you would like to kill
big_bear! :D [ed: eheh aint friendship something?]

<big_bear> ps. I personally wasn't it S!P (MoZ was like an Art
section of S!P, tho. at least it was founded by Reebok :)

<Scorpik> big bear: something like that...but as I told you before my
rifle will repair this situation soon :)
                  I was in S!P :)

<|ps|> scorpik: i know! :) you ever worked with big_bear on anything?

<Scorpik> ps: no...but maybe someday we will do something together...
what do you think about this idea Big Bear?
first we will go drink some cold beer together :)
[ed: inspiration is a very important factor! ;)]

<|ps|> maybe a co-op? that way you can both enter the same compo and
not kill each other afterwards! :D

<big_bear> Scorpik: Sure!! let's find a good studio in the middle
                   between poland and switzerland =)

        <Scorpik> ps; good idea :)
                  bigbear: hmmmm.....Huelsbeck's one? :)

<|ps|> big: i see you use ft like scorpik... there is a new ft out
               you know? seen it already?

<big_bear> ps. haha he didn't even TRY to kill me after Wired! but he
                   regrets it, I think

<Scorpik> ps: what is new in the latest version?

        <|ps|> scorp: let me check...

<Scorpik> big: be sure about it ;)))

        <|ps|> this was on www.quad98.net:
New release of FastTracker! Get it at from
               www.error-404.com/tuner/ft2/ft209.zip or www.starbreeze.com

and there might be some memory problems.
               so? say smtg someone...

<big_bear> ps. no I didn't see it yet. I've been working on synth
                   tunes lately, not modules :)

<|ps|> big: tell us more about it... :) synths...

<Scorpik> when FT's owners implement stereo samples option i will
                  be back to FT songs

<big_bear> ps. no gus pnp?? damn :(

<|ps|> why is FT better than IT in your opinion?

<big_bear> ps: over the years I couldn't resist buying some
synths... now I've got 4 of them and my mixer has become
too small :) the synths are: roland: d20,jv80,jp8000 and
                   ensoniq: mr.rack (for those interested)
                   the worm game, definately!!

        <|ps|> hehe! nibbles rules
               big: seriously... why FT?

        <big_bear> ps: actually I didn't have much of a choice. IT didn't
work on my machine until recently and now I don't want to
switch because I'm so used to FT

<|ps|> big: tell us about your influences in your music (besides
               smoking curtains)

<big_bear> ps: oh I'm influenced by many things. I like Vangelis very
much, Pink Floyd too. But I also like funk stuff and some
rock (e.g. Queen). And, not the least, classical music :)

<|ps|> you are also swiss, tell us about swiss scene...

<Scorpik> he is the only one there :)
                  hmmm....no any answer....so...I am right :)

<big_bear> ps: the swiss scene has been (of course) pretty small
since I know it. There has been some movement in the
recent past though. for example Calodox (a swiss group)
made 2nd place in the intro compo at Wired98. so I hope
                   it's still going upwards now

<|ps|> why big_bear? why did you choose that nick?

<big_bear> oh I think I was just pissed by people choosing these
supercool nicks like "serial killer" and such. I wanted
something _different_ ... and after all I really like
bears. not teddy bears, BEARS! :)

<|ps|> but teddy's are so sweet and cute! :P

<big_bear> yes. but real bears are even cuter (okay, until they stand
1m in front of you ;)

<Scorpik> I prefer plastic tanks with huge catterpillars :)

<|ps|> scorpik: really? those are my favorite! :)
and you can have little plastic men running around
big: anyways... whats the capital of madagascar?

<big_bear> Scorpik: plastic tanks?? so that's what "scorpik" means in
                   polish? =)

        <Scorpik> ps: let's play then ! :))))
                  *Little break in this interview*

[ed: boom boom! and my top-elite trooper sends a granade that bounces
on the tank and hits the airplane who comes diving into your 10
tanks and all explode and i win!!!]

<big_bear> ps, I'm not brave Sir Robin, you dumbass :)

        <|ps|> scorpik: :)
big: brave brave sir robin is not afraid of beeing injured in
many nasty ways. no he is not at all afraid of having his
kneecaps blown and his eyes pecked and his spleen ripped and
               his fingers smashed

<big_bear> ps: brave brave sir robin bravely ran away... SHUT UP!

<|ps|> big: :D so whats your favorite color? :)

        <Scorpik> big: yeah....:)))

<big_bear> ps: blue.. ah no, RED! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!
are you sure your mag isn't called pythonscene? :)

<|ps|> scorpik: whats the capital of asyria?

<Scorpik> what about Bald color? Do you know this one? It is my
favourite :) [ed: bald color? humm]
ps: eeeee....hmmmm....uffff....have no idea? What is the
                  asnwer?

<|ps|> big: no no! you wait until a certain interview with a certain
person! we are going to talk so much about monthy pythons no
one will have the guts to read it all! :) [ed: yes YOU!]
scorpik: er? i dont know that wwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh
anyways... let me think of some decent questions to ask...
scorpik: this is the time you ask big_bear a very interesting
               question and save my butt...

<Scorpik> ps: ask him about capital of asyria :)
                  okie my turn then :)

<|ps|> big: what is the capital of asyria?
scorpik: take it away... il go get something to eat...

<big_bear> ps, can't you ask me about in-flight velocities of
swallows (unladden ones)? =) [ed: no! thats too easy!]

<Scorpik> my dear Big Bear...tell us what you think about actuall
                  form of music compos

<big_bear> difficult question. one thing I like is the trend to
split the house/techno part off the rest. what I can't
stand is preselection, but I see the problem with too
many entries. and I don't know a good solution myself :(

<Scorpik> do you think that there should be any limitations for
songs...what about songs made in wav format or just mp3.
Or maybe it is good like it is and there should be just
tracker format songs under 1Mb of file? I'm still asking
                  about music compo :)

<big_bear> mp3 compos would be cool in a way, but I think 1. it would
be very unfair to people who can't afford expensive gear
and 2. there would be too small a difference to real world
music. Tracked music might lose it's originality very
                   quickly

        <|ps|> scorpik: another one! :)

<Scorpik> bear: well....you can say the same about demos. What if I
have only 486/8Mb ram? I can't compete with demos made for
                  p2-300Mb/64MB with i.e. voodoo.
next question.....do you think about your future as a
comercial composer or it is just your big passion and free
                  time-hobby?

<|ps|> scorpik: no one has only a 486/8Mb RAM nowdays! :P

<Scorpik> ps: come one....keyboards cost almost the same like fast
                  computers

<|ps|> scorpik: i dont know the market prices of keyboards! :P

<big_bear> Scorpik: it's my hobby right now and probably will stay
this way. but you never know... if I get pissed with my
job sometime and I've got the chance to do a job in music
                   biz I'm gonna do it.

<|ps|> what is your job btw?

<big_bear> Scorpik, about the 486 etc.: due to the speed of today's
machines demos are getting too mathematical nowadays. it's
                   not so.. romantic anymore :)
ps. student right now. but that may change at the end of
                   this year.

<Scorpik> big: it will change sooner if you still spend your free
                  time on IRC :)))
Big bear: tell us what we should ask you about.

<big_bear> haha :) hey you guys have to be creative right now, not
                   me! :)

<|ps|> big: if you had 1 year left to live what would you do?

<Scorpik> okie....wanna question!?! Here is it: tell us story of your
                  life! All story!!! all details!
ps: we can now go to sleep... he will only finish answering
                  maybe next week :)))

        <|ps|> big: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
scorp: i have a timetable you know? cant stay logging for
               ever! :P

<big_bear> ps: hummmm... I have no idea :) Start smoking more than 1
                   packet a day? :))))

<|ps|> big: really... what would you do...

        <Scorpik> ps: ehehehe.....

<big_bear> ps. I not quite sure. Either I would go and see all the
things I always wanted to see and do all the things I
want to do OR I'd try to create something as great as
possible just to give my life some sense. Sounds probably
                   silly, eh? :)

<|ps|> no, tell us what things ae those...

        <Scorpik> I know his answer! :)

<big_bear> ps, the ones to see or the ones to do?

        <|ps|> both

<big_bear> I'd like to go through the extremes. through the desert
and the arctic ice, climb high mountains etc. And of
course some more intimous stuff, but hey this isn't
Hustler Magazine, is it? :) ... oh and I'd certainly
start paragliding again ;D [ed: BAHAHAHAHAHAHAH]

        <|ps|> :P hahah
               what about cordless bungee jumping?

<big_bear> yes!!! but I'd wait until the last day. that'd be a
                   awesome way to die :)

<|ps|> hehe! :) what if you just get crippled all over and still
               breathe?

<big_bear> no problem. It's my last day, remember? call it tactics :)
                   [ed: smart-ass!]

<|ps|> hehehe! :P yeah, but it still would be one extremly painfull
               last day...

<big_bear> okok, I'd have to be lsd and morphine, then (lsd for the
fun, morphine for the pain :)
                   morphium even

<|ps|> hehe :) ok... im defintly out of questions... care to say
               hello to some people?

<big_bear> yeah. hugs'n kisses go to all the people in Fake That and
Level-D (especially nogsf&Workbench), the swiss scene,
#pixel folks, the guys from Calodox (go for it guys :)
                   ... and scorpik, NOT :)

<|ps|> haha! where can ppl reach you?

        <Scorpik> oh

        <big_bear> scorpik: :-P~~~ don't take it too seriously :)

<Scorpik> don't worry [ed: scorpik is now planning how to kill big]

<big_bear> ps: bigbear@webshuttle.ch at the moment. but since I'm
gonna change provider soon it's a safer bet to mail to my
                   uni account: mscheid@iam.unibe.ch

<|ps|> ok. i think this interview is kaputz now! :)
               any last remarks or insults?

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Control by Green (Party-version)
        Found at ftp://stack.nl/pub/demos/green/gr1_ctrl.zip
        2nd place at Bizarre 98

        System requirements:
Pentium, speed & memory requirements unknown
Soundcard: Midas used, so anything will do.
Screen: anything, from 320*240*32 to textmode, but due a bug, all
modes are listed as 320*200*32, so you might have to try a few times.

        The Demo:
Warning: this is the party version, but as we are already half a
year later, I doubt there will ever be a final version. It starts
with a very impressive 3D-scene: a bunker with several antennas is
standing in a desert. Inside, an alien controls a distant satellite
that is used for TV-transmissions. Several small TV-clips are shown
next to each other, as on the mosaic-channel, but then they disappear
in TV-snow, and all channels show the Green-logo. After this, lots of
different effects are shown, some are nicely connected to each other,
but there's no real story/theme in them (or I totally missed it).
Among the better thing are the realtime raytracing (SHARP, no
blurring at all, with 6 objects), the zoomer-in-a-zoomer, an effect
that actually USES the big ugly pixels resulting from zooming in, the
uncomplete metaballs, and the background of the greetings (it's not a
plasma, but I don't know how they did it). The last part is the
funniest: Mully & Sculder versus Bill Gates. I would like to see more
humour in demos, this really makes you want to see the demo again.
The music is quite difficult to describe. The best I can do is:
demo-soundtrack :). It's no techno, no rock (although it comes
close), no ambient,... There are lots of different instruments in it,
flutes, drums, ... You really have to listen to it yourself, music
isn't my strongest point. It fits the demo very well in the
beginning, but thereafter it's less synchronized, and repeats too
much. This tends to become boring.

        Good points: yes.

Bad points: few. (The colors of some parts are too dark, the music).

Worth the download: yes. [ed: every demo reviewed is worth to
download or we wouldn't download it ourselves in the first place
        tight seven? :)]

(Me ? Lazy !? Hey, I'm writing this almost during an exam! (Well,
just thereafter :)). [ed: Lazy anyways! :D just kidding ;)]

                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

        "Viper" by Eclipse
        3rd place at Wired'98 100k game compo.
        ftp://demo.cat.hu/scene/Demos.'98/Wired.'98/ [ed: sorry i don't know
        the exact url...]

Well this isn't exaclty and intro. It's actually a 100k game!
Extremly addicting i must say, you can play up to 6 players (i think)
you control a non-stopping line that you can directionize slightly.
If you hit a wall or the trace of one of the other lines you die!
Whenever one line dies, all other get one point. The traces of the
lines aren't continuos though... They leave some little holes that if
you pass with your own line you get an extra point! Game goes on
until all die and then it restarts on a clean screen. Whenever
someone reaches 200 they win! Simple, easy, addicting!
It's playable up to 3 players, after that your keyboard buffer
starts complaining so you better get a couple of joysticks if you
plan a viper deathmatch gathering! ;)
It even has some cute chip-music and sound effects as the lines go
against a wall! This game was re-coded by Eclipse. It was originally
        an Amiga game (i think...)
Enjoy a trip into cutteness! :)
                                                                           ps

=====! mod !===================================================================

        "Unknown phuture" by Elwood
Have no idea where to get!

Well... I love Elwood's style and this tune breaks all barriers. It
dates back to '96 but who cares? It has some vocal samples of a guy
saying "Here in Neo-Tokyo millions of survivers swell in chaotic
fatality and search forward for an unknown future". The song picks up
the pace and launches into Elwood's typical style of fast-paced
ambient we all know and love! The leads echo as the virtual unknown
vertigo seems never to stop... It's like your on a roller-coaster
always downhill. It's suberb! ;) There are other Elwood songs who
have this feeling alot enhanced but this one has some awesome vocals
        to make up for it.
Sorry for the small review but as you all know i am not very good
at reviewing music! :) I just listen to it alot! :)
                                                                           ps

http://www.ucsd.edu

// *** QFA (Questions that will prolly be Frequently Asked) ***
1. What's up with starting the party in the Gallery rooms and then moving to
the International Center?

Some lamers had already reserved the International Center till 11pm on
Friday, April 2 when I went to make initial reservations back in October.

2. Where are pics from SB98?
Where can I read an SB98 party report?
When the hell are you going to update the SB98 page?

Real soon now. Note though that the "god" account at crl.com might be
disappearing before then. :(

3. How many people are you expecting to show up to SB99?

Lots. [ed: nice answer...]

4. Is the party definitely going to happen?
Is it safe to go ahead and make arrangements to attend?

SB99 will happen. I have a pretty good track record with these things (as
this will be the THIRD Spring Break party, and I've carried through with all
the other scene gatherings I've organized as well). The facility is
confirmed, the funding is assured, and so as long as Saddam Hussein doesn't
nuke San Diego before then we're good to go.

// *** Facilities ***
We will of course be having the usual setup of tables, chairs, power,
ethernet internet connections, gaming network (though note this year I have
been banned from such activities and so will have to do weird stuff like show
demos for the duration of the party... :P), pizza kitchen, industrial
refridgeration, 20+ foot screen, moderately audible speakers, nearby food and
24-hour grocery, toilets, Tijuana, security, and California weather.

We will not have showers, guarenteed dark, quiet and soft sleeping areas,
drugs and alcohol, or anywhere near an adequate supply of coke and chips for
you.

You should bring computers, keyboards, mixers, headphones, caffeinated
beverages, 10baseT cables, hubs, demo and music competition entries, funny
animations, anything you need to sleep if you're the type of person who
engages in such activity.

// *** Compos ***
Exact competition details have yet to be determined, but you can be assured
the following competitions will happen:

- Demo competition (probably an open competition for most anything we can get
to run; ie, dos, windoze, 3d accelerated, intros)

- Music competition (pretty open competition of most anything music composed
  with a tracker)

- Tracking competition (songs based off of sample pack provided at the party)

- Bunny chasing competition (will take place Easter Sunday, April 4th of
  course)

The machines that will be available to run things are:
1. p2-504, 128 ram, ATI rage128 (fury), Canopus Voodoo2, Turtle Beach
Montego A3D, Win98 boot, latest JVM installed

2. p5-292mmx, 64 ram, Diamond Stealth64, Canopus Voodoo1, GUS PnP
(SoundBlaster 16 available if absolutely necessary), Win98 or Dos boot,
   latest JVM installed

// *** Information coming soon ***
- SB99 web page
- Many more details on the party (will be very similar to the SB97 and SB98
  pages)
- Prize info, additional competitions, more competition specs
- T-Shirt info
- Planes, trains, and automobiles page
- Expected attendees list
- More items in this section. :)

Cya at the party!
