I know he's gonna get pissed at me for saying this so i'll say his
pics kick more ass than lazur and made will ever have so he is a
        little more happy now! :)

That's about it... More news check below!

And Trajic/Rhyme send some news from scene-hu corner aswell:

          fasttracker 2.09 - yes, it's here! it's unofficial yet - but it
supports your gus pnp at last! it was only an internal version of
starbreeze, waiting to be released. you can download it:
        www.scene-hu.com/ft209.zip!
thanx to witchcraft for the notice! [13 jan, 1999]

freax - it's not over, it's just delayed! as you may know, tomcat

        - a shorter one in Hungarian
          http://www.scene-hu.com/adv/freaxhu.htm

jumper'98, they had a short delay... but it's ready now! it has a

                                                                 trajic/rhyme

And Seven digged up some information aswell:

        Remember Dan Wright?
He was the founder of Hornet, started organizing the Music
Contests, and has released the Escape & Freedom CD's. He has a small
company nowaday, Fusecon, wich tries to release stuff from
        scene-musicians on CD. Check out
        http://www.fusecon.com/audio/scenecds
There is also a database with all scene-related CD's
releases/announced so far, sorted by date, so you can easily see if
there's something new. This month, already 3 CDs have been released
        (mostly music).

I know, Fusecom exist already one/two years, but it's the first
time I hear about it, and it's updated 13-1-1999, so I thought some
editors may regard this as news :) [ed: so we do! :)]

                                                                        Seven

<Psychic_S> sulphur: how many ppl are in tesko?

<sulphur> he rolls them with his eyes closed. :)

<NRG-> I sent some code and gfx and I was signed up ehehe
Tesko derives itself from several demo group's over the years.
Way back in October 1991 a new Amiga demo group called Doom
was born. This group's talents were quite poor for a long
while, until the group underwent a name and style change in
February 1993. Out went the boring Doom name and serious
wannabe demo group... in came a new crazy (almost Melon like)
style and the name... Voodoo Design! Morale boosted somewhat
and Voodoo put out a few demos and intros plus the well known
UK Charts. Until October 1993, when Voodoo disbanded into
separate groups (Tesko and Killer Zombie Dezines)

        <sulphur> cut'n'paste from webpage. ha.

        <NRG-> :) blah

<barog> 12 people in tesko at the moment.. actually might be 13..
depends if trev included sin. our newest coder.. we aren't
                recruiting any more for now

        <Psychic_S> all from the UK?

<NRG-> shall we talk about how big and up'n'coming the uk demo scene
               is?

        <Psychic_S> nrg: please do! :P

        <NRG-> about tesko =
               http://www.scentral.demon.co.uk/teskodev/about.htm

<barog> psychic: yep.. all uk tallent

<NRG-> Im thinking. barog help me out
we got a mailing list :)

        <barog> the ukscene yea..
nrg: i'll do this bit.. i'm good at speeches
                well..

<NRG-> yea leave the boozin to me

<barog> I'm in Bradford with TimJ at the moment and last night in the
                pub we discussed Deja Vu.

        <Psychic_S> over a couple beers :P

<barog> Tim views the ukscene in exactly the same way that MajicM and
I have been talking about it. The scene needs to talk, to get
together.. it needs to have something added to it (or maybe
                something so it can develop)

        <NRG-> needs a new attitude

<barog> If people can meet, and experience scene meets again, then
groups will form and we can share ideas to help the uk scene
improve to become the BEST scene out of all international
scenes.. all we need, is people at the party..
                to make the effort..

<Psychic_S> so the point is... all in dejavu? like in last year? hei?

<NRG-> I think the problem is that people in the ukscene see coders
               etc. as nerds

<barog> well.. dejavu last year wasn't planned at all like this one..
dejavu 1 was minor in comparison.. this time we have a domain
                a good site..

<Psychic_S> how many ppl did turn up on last dejavu? 20?

<barog> 10.. but we held it in a house (this house)
this is held in a proper partyplace..

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Moai by Nomad (party-version)
        Found at http://files.theparty.dk
1st place at The Party 8.

        System requirements:
DOS: Pentium, Univbe or Vesa 16-bit, SB or GUS, 5.5 MB HD.
        Windows: DirectX 3.

Memory requirements are not listed, but I read on
        comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos that the party-version requires 64MB (Wow! I
have that :)), but the final version should work with "only" 32MB.

        The party-result:
Well, there has been quite some discussion whether Moai or State of
Mind/Bomb deserved to win at TP8. Well, Moai DID win, so apparently
they deserved it, isn't it ? But State of Mind feels better the more
you look at it, while Moai has a large "surprise-factor". After
looking at it three times, it's less appealing because you know what
will happen. So, you may wish to skip the next section till the
"The demo"-part, because I'll tell the story, spoiling the fun of
those who haven't seen it yet. You've been warned.

        The story:
Do you know the Easter-island? It's an island in the Pacific where
there are old statues, mostly very large faces, looking at the sea.
Moai (i with 2 points on it, nowhere on my keyboard) is the name of
either the statues or the civilisation that created them (I'm not
sure. Do you care?). Enough geographic bullshit. The demo starts with
a 3D-scene of 4 of those statues looking at a stormy sky. The credits
are crossfaded over this, and the title screen is shown (black &
white, yuck). Then a (hand-drawn?) picture of the heads is shown
while the rest of the demo is being loaded. The main part starts at
the entrance of an ancient temple. We walk through several tunnels,
arriving in a large hall with 6 statues, a mirror and some kind of
pointy mirror-ball, hanging from the ceiling. This part reminds me of
The Fulcrum/Matrix. Suddenly, a part of the wall rotates and an
Moai-priest enters the room. The mirror rotates and some laser-guns,
made of stone, fire at the mirror-ball at the ceiling. The bullets
reflect on the mirror and hit the priest, who melts into the ground.
He re-appears below the mirror-ball, now wearing a white costume. The
whole hall transforms to a disco, the music changes and the priest
starts dancing. This is really surprising, the first time you see it.
Even the statues are dancing, really funny. Then the main characters
are shown with their name, like at the end of Tribes. When you think
the end of the demo is reached, the camera zooms out, showing a
television in a modern room with books, an aquarium, a computer, ...
When we walk out the door however, we are back in the temple-hall
with the dancing statues, and back in the modern room, the priest is
dancing. The greetings appear, while the camera keeps zooming out,
revealing the television, then turning to the priest and zooming out
again. If this sounds confusing, the effect itself is even more
confusing. You really lose your grip on time/space perception (don't
use drugs, watch Moai :)). Then some boasting about the nr of faces,
objects, etc appear, not really interesting. The end-credits are
original: a text saying who did what, morphs into a 3D-modelling of
        that person.

        The demo:
Basically, it's another of those high-quality 3D-world shows. No
2D-effects, hardly any pictures, just 3D-studio objects. The quality
of the code is hard to judge on a P2 350, but there are omnilights,
mirrors, recursive vectors, ... Yes, all done before, but the best
thing about this demo is not the 3D-engine, it's the ideas and
surprises (design, if you wish). Nomad really tried to be original,
and I think they succeeded. There are some links to other famous
demos (Tribes, The fulcrum), and some little jokes (3de Moai:
DiCaprio :)). The music fits the feeling of the demo, calm and exotic
in the first part, changing to some disco-tune at the second. The
music is an .XM, not an MPEG. Good.

        Worth the download ?:
It's a real party-demo, grabbing your attention and really
surprising the FIRST time you see it (and that's all that counts at a
party. Unless you want all demos to be shown three times). It's a
must-see, but not something you will keep on your harddisk forever.

        Apologies:
Yes, this review is way too long. I know. Sorry Psychic. But we all
know how long it may take before the final version is released, so I
wanted to keep those people up-to-date who don't have 64MB, didn't go
to The Party, but want to know what everyone on the net is talking
about :). [ed: it's all fine by me! :)]

                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

        Alien Sex Clone - Fudge
        -----------------------

Fudge has already proved that they are THE masters of 64k intros,
and they didnt dissappoint us with the new member of the clone
series. Im not going to describe the intro effect by effect, itd take
too long. Instead, id like to talk about the overall feeling itself,
which is just great. First, its good to hear that synthesized music
(i mean synth. samples of course) does not automatically mean 303
like fast-paced techno music. The song just fits great to the intro
itself, mild melody with nice colors, and - traditionally -
eye-pleasing textures. The code itself seems to be good too - it's
fast, accurate, even in 512x384 (which is strange, considering that
my video card doesnt support it - and still, it runs perfectly).
Fudge guys took their time and came up with a long intro which ISNT
boring - not at all. Some effects seem familiar, but take another
look: they've been redesigned, at least most of them.

Alien Sex Clone by Fudge is a MUST for every scener - no doubt. Oh,
and it won the TP98 64kb intro competition, congrats to Fudge, hope
to see some more from them soon.

        author: captain
        lenght: 5:06
        type: 4 channel mod

the song begins with nice choirs and filter sweeps. then begins the
melody and the drums which aren't the usual 909 or 808 and sound
acoustic. it sounds a lot like it's played live and it's not so
minimalistic as the music nowdays is. it can be heard that the maker
has done a lot for it. it sounds a little like technotronic and gives
a good look of the music made back then. the samples sound like
sampled from a digital synthesizer. something like a roland d?

a very nicely organized song in 4 channels, a classic which doesn't
        die.

        you can download it from

Shut your mouth and get back in line,
and if you don't like it, well, it suits us just fine...
We hold the levers! We pull the strings!
And those are just some of our favorite things...

[huh?]............................The more alive among you already know what
YALP is, the more sober among the alive
already know that the third one is coming,
and the more informed among the sober also
know that we're changing our traditional
time of year and party place. However, for
the dead, drunk and uninformed, we are
going to say that YALP is the oldest great
Yugoslav demo party, that two summer ones
have been held by now, and that we are just
inviting you to the first winter YALP.

The date is January 23rd, and the address...........[fine, when and where?]
is Radomira Vujovica 3, Belgrade. The
easiest way to find us is to reach the
hospital "Dragisa Misovic" by public
transportation lines 40, 41, 42 or 59, or
the "Topciderska zvezda" square by the line
43, and then follow the attached map. The
door gets opened at 12:oo (noon) and closed
somewhere during the next night or morning.

                                     [what are the compos?]....

=====! DSYS reactions !========================================================

[editor: this is an ICQ log of a conversation between me and
Programmer/Universe. Me and prog though it would be
appropriate to share it with the rest of the demoscene]

<Psychic Symphony> dsys has been released!

        <Programmer> dsys?
                     what's that?

        <Psychic Symphony> doomsday's demomaker! =) system

<Programmer> really? and what does it do?

<Psychic Symphony> makes the doomsdays demos! like boost, off
                           and elektronics

        <Programmer> =)

<Psychic Symphony> it runs a script, if u know smtg about 3d and gfx
u can make a demo without coding at all!!!

<Programmer> Does it has Windows interface to create good demos?

<Psychic Symphony> no... no interface... all txt script

<Programmer> uh... now the scene will be flooded with a 'dsd alike'
                     demos?

<Psychic Symphony> im waiting for reactions on that!

<Programmer> ghm write down my own reaction , ok? :) [ed: NO hehe!]

<Psychic Symphony> i reckon some articles will be written about that!

<Programmer> There was some effects in last doomsday demos, looking
always the same , and there was some different 3d
scenes. To their end, they have released a DSYS. Or
haven't released, anyway. But for now, it will be called
'lame' as it was done 5 years ago with the famous
                     program called 'intromaker'
                     have you heard about it?

<Psychic Symphony> the guys lived far from each other! MRI wrote the
script reader so the gfx dudes could test some
3d/gfx ideas without needing the coder around!
no! can't say i heard about it!

<Psychic Symphony> u want me to copy what u are writing? (write down
                           my own reaction...)

<Programmer> yes , I want you to copy it. If their system can just
use 'internal' effects, it will kill the scene.
                     never heard?
where can I download this system?

<Psychic Symphony> no! i think it can use some externals... i dont
recall very well, i only read a little of some
                           info files...
                           on ftp://demo.cat.hu/New/ (system or smtg)

<Psychic Symphony> its 7 megs with the examples (boost and off)

<Programmer> I want to :) But I will say more , when I will get an
                     archive

[editor: there! hope this little article can unleash some opinions
about dsys... What will happen when a gfx/sound duo wins
some demoparty with a demo done with dsys? If you read the
infofile on dsys, MRI already says that to do such demos it
does still take lot of talent, predicting scene speculation.
Let's see what the future brings :)]

About the votesystem: that percentage you see is the average
percentage the voters gave to this production. The best demo from
each voter gets 100% and the worst 0%. This votesystem is
publicly available in linux and dos4gw versions, probably in
source form in the future. Other features include addition of
comments from each voter, the ability to abstain from saying
anything about some production (like, if you're jurying in a
compo where you have your own prod and don't want to vote
        yourself, it's possible).
