Instructions For Upgrading Any Vessel To Class 5 Engines And Shields
====================================================================

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A COMMUNIQUE FROM WITHIN THE GUILD. MESSAGE AS FOLLOWS:

It has come to our attention that elements from within the Mercenaries
Guild have conspired to withhold information on recent developments in the
fields of power and shield technology. Furthermore, the afore-mentioned
elements have formed a cadre to keep these developments out of the hands
of our Guild of Merchants. Utilizing clandestine contacts within the Cyberspace
Guild we have obtained the following information from the Mercenaries' files.
This information, as well as its origin, is not to be distributed outside of the
Merchants Guild. Penalty for which is permanent expulsion from the Guild and
banning of all professional contacts with the offending merchant.

Steps-by-step instructions for upgrading your ship to Class 5 Engines
and Shields, regardless of ship type.

Step 1. Identify the .SAV file that you wish to have your ship upgraded
in and copy it to another file name. This will provide a backup
in case you make an error or the modification is rejected by the
game. A good idea would be to copy it to the same file name with
a .BKP extension. Example: SAVE01.SAV copy to SAVE01.BKP.
Make certain that you have over 300,000 credits. If you don't
either do some missions or see the special note below on how to
"upgrade" your cash. Also, you cannot have any missions you
have accepted incomplete. Thus, if you have a mission to
deliver something to somewhere you accepted from the guild,
either find a save that doesn't have any missions, or complete
the outstanding mission(s), return to a base, and then save and
exit. Having cargo in your hold, except for the alien artifact,
may also have to be sold (you shouldn't have to though).
This option would only be necessary if you're having problems
getting the upgrade to work with your game. After squaring
everything away, save, exit, and make your backups.

Step 2. Enter PRIVATEER game and go to a ship dealer. Purchase an Orion
Gunship and then upgrade the shields and engines to class 5.
IMPORTANT: Upgrade the shields and engines **ONLY**. Purchase
              no other equipment.

Step 3. Leave the ship dealer and go to the landing bay. Bring up the
computer (C key) and save the game to the file you backed-up.
              Exit PRIVATEER.

Step 4. With a hex-editor (eg. Norton Diskedit, etc.), go to hex-offset
28 (off-set 40 in decimal) and change it to one of the following:
              00 - Tarsus; 01 - Orion; 02 - Centurion; 03 - Galaxy. Please
make certain that it is the one-byte hex value you are changing
and not the character interpretation of the hexidecimal values.
Save the file and exit the hex-editor.

Step 5. Enter PRIVATEER game and load modified game save file. Go to
ship dealer and check ships equipment manifest by going to
repair and upgrade area and clicking on SELL option. Go ahead
and cycle through your equipment and verify that you have Class
5 shields and engines, but DON'T SELL THE ENGINES OR SHIELDS!!
If you do, the game will only allow you to buy up to class 3.
You can repair and sell the class 5 engines and shields and your
game should run fine with these upgrades. You'll also note that
the ship graphic in the upgrade and repair area no longer seems
to have anything in the engine area, but don't be concerned as
the class 5 engine upgrade will still work. If you have checked
and the manifest shows class 5 engines and shields, click on BUY
and flesh-out your vessel with whatever equipment your heart
desires. If not, exit and restore from your backed-up game
(.BKP). Go back to Step 2 and carefully try again. If it still
wont give you class 5 shields and engines or the game crashes.
Restore from the backup and forget it. Perhaps you either have a
later version of PRIVATEER or your hex-editor is modifying the
wrong byte. Either way, check around some of your local BBS's.
You might find a PRIVATEER ship editor or something of that sort.

Special Note on Cash
====================

It is possible to give yourself as much money as you might need using
a hex-editor, but I STRONGLY urge you not to do it. Not only will you make
the game too easy, you will rob yourself of the joy that comes with building
the ship of your dreams a piece at a time. Not to mention the feeling of
reaching a goal by your own honest effort. If you paid money for this game,
and most legal users did, you're also cheating yourself out the money you
spent by depleting the entertainment value of this game. That aside, this
is for you cheating %#&@*|$ out there that just wanted to destroy everything
in sight and have fun too. First, go into the game and load the save you wish
to upgrade on. At the landing bay/hangar screen, press the "C" and then the
"F" buttons. Write down the number of credits you have. Exit the game.
Using a decimal to hex calculator, determine what your credits are in
hexidecimal. Example: You have 150,000 credits. In hexidecimal, that is
249F0. Diskedit your .SAV file and look for this string, but remember,
hex is stored in low-hi format, so using the above example, you would look
for F0 49 02. After locating the string, change it to whatever you want.
So if you wanted to bump it to 500,000 credits, you would change it to
7A120, or 20 A1 07 in the .SAV file. Save, exit, and start the game.
Pull up your finances and check to see if your credit count is now what you
want. Enjoy!!
