(tm) Registered Trademarks of Microsoft Corporation.

98lite enables you to install the Windows95(tm) Explorer
shell into Windows98(tm). This makes for a lean installation
that keeps most of the great Windows98 core features, but
  *without* the following features:
        Internet Explorer 4.0
        Active Desktop Components
	Internet Connection Wizard
        Windows Update
        Welcome fluff (waste of space)
Online Service Providors (You can set this up manualy)
You can also choose to exclude:
	Active Movie
	System Info
	Windows Bitmaps

Why?
===
My computer is slow. It is a NoteBook I have borrowed from
work (no-name clone, P133 (not MMX) 10.5 inch 256 colour LCD
display and 14.4 Modem, NO CD, but thankfully 32MB RAM, 2.1G HDD).
This system is a real dog, that has disk and graphics benchmarks
below a 486DX100. On this system, I found Windows98 to be
considerably slower than windows95. However, I like the improved
stability and some features of windows98. Like many good things,
98lite was born out of necessity. I simply can not afford to buy a
faster computer of my own, so I'll do *anything* to squeeze the
last drop of system performance from this notebook. 98lite is
  the end result.

Perhaps the real reason is everyone said IE was so tightly
integrated into windows98 that it could never be removed. :)

98lite is "Donation Ware". You can use it as you wish, but if
you appreciate my work and would like to make a donation to help
me buy a decent computer of my own, then please send me whatever
you think 98lite is worth to you (Suggestions: Money pref. US or
Australian, a new fast computer, or a cool looking postcard!).

Installation
============
Copy the entire setup directory that contains all the
Windows98 CAB files to your hard disk. Unzip the 98lite zip
  archive to this setup directory.

Grab your legal copies of the following Window95(tm) files
and place these in the same directory.
        Explorer.exe
        Shell32.dll
        ComDlg32.dll
        NotePad.exe
        WordPad.exe

The first time you run 98lite - it will move these win95 files
into a subdirectory called 98lite, so that they do not interfere
with any future installations that you may wish to do using the full
  Windows98 setup.

Run 98lite.exe to install a lean windows98(tm) using the 98lite
custom configuration that excludes Internet Explorer(tm) v4.0.

Visit the web page for details on how 98lite works.

"Integration? We ain't got no stinking integration!"

  I hope you enjoy 98lite.

  Shane

NOTES
=====
* Normally, you will not have any *.inf files in your setup directory.
98lite will overwrite the following files with customised versions
  if they exist:
        layout.inf
        layout1.inf
        setuppp.inf
        subase.inf
        shell.inf
        ieshell.inf
        msinfo.inf
        axa.inf

98lite simply extracts copies of these files from Precopy2.CAB and
alters the copies. The original files are inside the CAB and are
  not touched.

98lite cleans up after itself - deleting the inf files after setup.

To install normally - with IE, simply check that the *.inf files
are not in your setup dir, and run SETUP.EXE as normal.

* In prev versions I thought the ICW was required for
Auto dialup - this was incorrect. The ICW is now always
excluded, but auto dialup is enabled.

Known Issue
===========
Rundll.exe will GPF after exiting the ADVANCED display properties.
This can be remedied by replacing the DISPLY CONTROL PANNEL APPLET
with the Win95 version. Replace the win98 versions of desk.cpl and
deskcp16.dll in the system folder with the win95 versions (from win95_CAB04).
To my best knowledge, you only loose the Color Management tab - which
most users dont use anyhow. The win98 version of desk.cpl is
stored as deskw95.cpl in win98_CAB28 and it is renamed to desk.cpl during
installation. deckcp16.dll is in win98_CAB31. You can extract these and
put them in the system folder (renaming deskw95.cpl to desk.cpl) to
return to the default setup. I may include this in a future 98lite
  release - pending user feedback.
