---------------------------------------------------------------------

If you like the work I have done on my F310 cockpit, then I think you
will appreciate my latest effort. Cockpit 5 has a revised monocoque
and updated steering wheel, while retaining the dashboard and other
details from Cockpit 4. The proportion of the detailing on the wheel
face is correct except for the cluster of 4 displays. The size and
proportion of these displays have been 'cheated' in order to fit them
into the design. Initially I just had 2 displays that were in the
correct postion and scale, but a beta design of the F310B produced by
my friend, Tristam Douglas, convinced me that showing 4 displays
would better illustrate the true look of the wheel. I have included a
small portion of an illustration I did which shows how the wheel face
would actually look like. This was produced from an artist's b/w ink
drawing of the wheel as seen in Autosport, (16 January, vol.146 no.3)
I have yet to see a good photo of the wheel, so the colouring and
texture treatments are derived from my F310 cockpit.

F310B Wheel Notes ..

The wheel is definitely more complex than last year's. There are SIX
display screens instead of two, and the the gearchange lights have
been moved to the outside of the display panel. On my cockpit design
I have a single wide display on the upper bar for the speedometer,
but this would be divided into two displays. The gearchange and
clutch paddles remain the same, while there are now five control
dials, not three. This would be contained on the lower part of the
wheel face which, unfortunately, we can't see with the depicted scale
of the wheel in my design. These dials control the settings for: the
engine fuel/air mixture, brake bias, rev program, drive-by-wire,
clutch, and differential.

Other Things ..

For those of you that don't know the details of this design, the top
point on the cockpit shell is actually referred to as the front roll-
over bar. '97 rules require that the cockpit sides have to be 22cm
below a line from the top of the front roll-over bar to the top of
the rear one, while the drivers's head must be at least 5cm below it.
The key is to get the driver's head as low as possible, that is why
many teams have now adopted a more reclined seating position and the
side pads don't need to be as high and bulky like the '96 cars. The
template doesn't allow me to make the front roll-over bar taller, but
I think it looks adequate under the circumstances. The bumps on the
suspension cover give added clearance for the suspension mechanicals
and stick out more since the car is much lower this year. Flat, wing
profile suspension will also be the norm for many teams this year, so
I have revised the look of the pushrods and wishbones to illustrate
this.

ALL modifications for Cockpit 5 version 1.0 are of my own design.

I would like to give a special credit to my friend, Tristam Douglas
<gen5td@leeds.ac.uk>, who first introduced to me his version of
the new F310B cockpit. Technically, this cockpit is the product of
both of us sharing our ideas for the design, and I am quite pleased
that we were able to help and spur each other on in the design
process. I highly recommend that you check out his version of the
F310B when he releases it :)
