patch, please check the Troubleshooting Guide which is included
on the Shadows of the Empire CD. You can access this through the
game's launcher.

This version of the game has been modified to:
* Enhance the performance of all supported 3D cards.
* Include support for Matrox M3D and NEC Apocalypse 3Dx
  graphics cards
* This patch also includes a fix for Force Feedback Support.

Instructions for Installing this Patch
--------------------------------------
When you run the self-executable file, it will create a new
folder; C:\Shadows. There will be five files in it;
Shadows.exe, Shadowff.dll, Shadows.doc, Shadows.txt and
Readme.txt. After the folder is created, you will need to copy
these files to two of the directories where you originally
installed Shadows of the Empire. The default location is
C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Shadows.

Locations where files need to be installed:
 * Copy the executable and DLL files into the SDATA folder.
 * Copy the documentation files into the Shadows folder.

When you copy these files to the directories, you will be asked
if you want to overwrite the existing files. Choose Yes to All
to overwrite the existing versions of these files.

General Troubleshooting
***********************

Desktop Resolution
------------------
We recommend that your desktop be set to 16 bit color when
 playing Shadows of the Empire.

Checking System Analyzer
------------------------
Before installing Shadows of the Empire, you can run the System
Analyzer Program from the launcher to see if your computer
meets the requirements of Shadows of the Empire. This screen
will change after you install Shadows of the Empire. Before
installation, it will tell you that you need 50 MB of free hard
drive space to install the game. After installation, it will
show you that you need 20 MB for a swap file, which it will show
as installed. It will also show the version of DirectX that is
 installed on your system.

Having Problems Running Shadows of the Empire?
----------------------------------------------
Shadows of the Empire is designed to run under Windows 95
with DirectX 5.0. If the game unexpectedly freezes up,
returns you to your desktop, or if you experience any other
severe problems, you should try to properly exit Windows
and reboot your computer. (As a rule, you should never turn
off your computer while the hard drive is active.) This
will help to prevent possible problems related to the error
that you have experienced. It is especially important to
reboot your computer before trying any of the troubleshooting
tips or before attempting to restart the game. If your comp-
uter reboots into Safe Mode, go to Shut Down Windows and
choose Restart the Computer. This should put you back into
 normal Windows 95.

Why cant I get the Game's Launcher to Respond?
-----------------------------------------------
Your CD-ROM drive may have stopped responding.
There may be a conflict in your system.
This may be due to a scratched or dirty CD.
Please consult the CD-ROM Drive Issues section in this
  Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

I can't launch the game. What do I do now?
-------------------------------------------
Please check DirectX Issues/Setup of the Troubleshooting
Guide to see if your computer hardware is compatible with
  DirectX 5.0.
You may not have enough free space on your hard drive for
Shadows of the Empire to play. Check to see how much room
is left on the drive. Once the game is installed, you need
to have at least 20MB of free space on your hard drive to
  play Shadows.
Do you have any other applications running, such as memory
managers, screen savers, or virus protection programs? Any
of these may interfere with Shadows of the Empire. Please
refer to General Information in the Troubleshooting Guide
  for more information.
The Shadows of the Empire CD may be dirty or scratched, or
the CD-ROM drive may be having trouble reading the Shadows
of the Empire CD. Please check CD-ROM Drive Issues in the
  Troubleshooting Guide.

What should I do if my computer goes to a Black Screen or
Locks Up?
---------
If you end up at a black screen, please press ESC, SPACE BAR,
or ENTER before trying anything else. If this fails, press
CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose END TASK on Shadows of the Empire,
which will take you back to the desktop. If you do not see
the dialog box after pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, hit ENTER twice
and this should take you back to the desktop. Then restart
your computer and try running the game again. While playing
Shadows of the Empire, we suggest that you do not use
CTRL-ALT-DEL, as this may cause the game to stop responding
or freeze up with a looping sound playing.

What can I do if Shadows of the Empire does not Start or
I Receive one of the Following Messages:
Unable to Initialize Card for 3D
 Hardware Assessment

Shadows of the Empire may have stopped to tell you the missing
features of your 3D card. If this is the case, just hit continue
and Shadows of the Empire should start.
You may be starting Shadows of the Empire in a high resolution
that your 3D card does not have enough memory for.

is supported by Shadows of the Empire.

Force Feedback Joysticks and Other Controller Issues
****************************************************

Using Force Feedback Joysticks with Shadows of the Empire
---------------------------------------------------------
Shadows of the Empire has support for Force Feedback joysticks
through Microsofts Direct Input. All of these joysticks vary
in their functionality and may work differently in the game,
or you may have a newer Force Feedback joystick that is not
supported. Some forces may be stronger than others, depending
on the type of Force Feedback stick you are using.

Enabling Force Feedback Joysticks
---------------------------------
There is no setup involved in using this type of joystick.
As a default, the weapon recoil is not enabled, as we have
found that it is harder to aim while shooting when it is
enabled. You may enable it by going to the Game Options menu
from the launcher and selecting Force Feedback when firing.

Force Feedback Joysticks with Certain Sound Cards
-------------------------------------------------
We found that using certain sound cards with these joysticks
and playing 22k sound files, may lose joystick functionality
during game play. If you experience problems while using your
Force feedback joystick in the game please make sure that you
are using the latest drivers provided by your joystick
 manufacturer.

Enabling Gamepads
-----------------
If you are using a gamepad, you will need to enable it by
checking the checkbox next to Game Pad in the Game Options
 menu from the games launcher.

Controller Issues
-----------------
If you are having problems with control in Shadows of the
Empire, such as inability to control the game with your joy-
stick, keyboard, or mouse, please check the following:
Your joystick may not be calibrated. Please exit the game
and calibrate your joystick. You can go to Calibrate Joy-
stick by selecting it from the game's launcher menu.
Your joystick may not be properly centered.
Your trim controls may be out of alignment.
