1.0 Installation

Mastermind should automatically launch the set-up program when you insert the CD for the first time. If it does not, Click the START button, select PROGRAMS and then EXPLORER. Select the CD-ROM icon and then double-click the icon called SETUP. The Installshield will now launch and take you through the installation process.

2.0 Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I play Mastermind across the Internet?

A. YES! To start or connect to a Mastermind game using Microsoft ZONE (TM), simply log-on to WWW.ZONE.COM and select New Player Sign Up. It does not cost anything to join and you will be given full instructions on site. If you are already a member, go to the Game selection screen, select Board Games and then Mastermind. For more information, please refer to the game manual.

Q. Why did the game tell me that I cracked the code even though I only had 1 or 2 red scoring pegs?

A. If the game is set to 'EASY', you do not need to solve the code in the correct order, you just need to have all the correct pegs on the same line.

Q. I want to play my own Music CD's when I play Mastermind. How can I?

A. You can't. In order to limit Software Piracy, the game requires the CD be to present at all times. Sorry!

Q. Is there a strategy for cracking the code?

A. Yes and No. Everyone has their own strategy for cracking the code. Some are better than others. The most simple technique is placing only 2 pegs per line e.g. 2 blues and 2 reds. Do this until you think you have found the correct pegs. Now you just need to put them in the right order!.

Q. I have a Mouse with Wheel, but it won't work with Mastermind. What can I do?

A. In order for the wheel to work it must be activated. To activate it, go into Control Panel and click on the mouse icon. Select the Tab marked 'Wheel' and place a tick in the box marked 'Turn on the Wheel'. Restart your computer and it should work fine. If there is no tab marked 'Wheel', then it's possible that you may not have set-up your mouse correctly and may need to reinstall using the disks that came with it.

Q. Are there any Cheats?
A. No.

Q. I have narrowed down the correct code to all bar 1 or 2 pegs, but I cannot find what the
missing peg is.
A. If you set the game to 'PLUS' before you started, it is highly likely that the missing
peg(s) is actually a blank space. This is the purpose of the PLUS feature, effectively
adding a new peg.

Q. How many possible code combinations are there?

A. I knew you'd ask this, there are:

1296 possible combinations for 6 pegs (Junior)
2401 possible combinations for 6 pegs + blanks (Junior - plus)
4096 possible combinations for 8 pegs (Mastermind)
6561 possible combinations for 8 pegs + blanks (Mastermind - plus)
10000 possible combinations for 10 digits (Bomb)
331776 possible combinations for 24 pegs (Supreme)
390625 possible combinations for 24 pegs + blanks (Supreme - plus)

So, you will have to play this game and all its variations a total of Seven hundred and forty-six thousand seven hundred and fifty five times (746755) before you have exhausted all the possible combinations!

Q. What does 'AI' stand for?

A. Artificial Intelligence.

Q. What are the differences between the AI players? (Click on the name of the player to change them)

A. Andrei(1) if youre fed-up with losing
Norman(2) a Good challenge for Beginners.
Karl (3) a challenge for Intermediate and advanced players.
Max (4) is the toughest of the AI players.

Q. What's the meaning of life?
A. Please don't ask us. We don't know either.

4.0	Jazz Adrenalin Rush 3D card Users

Some users of the above card may experience problems whilst playing Mastermind.

If you experience any problems please carry-out the following steps.

You can do this one of two ways:

If you have Internet access, go to the web site HTTP://WWW.JAZZMM.COM. If you go to the

'drivers' section of the site, you will be able to download and install the latest drivers for your card.

Simply follow the instructions on the site.

Contact the retailer where you bought your Jazz card and ask them to help you update the drivers.

INSTALLING A NEW GRAPHICS DRIVER
--------------------------------

Download the relevant file onto your PC.

You will now need to do one of the following. Either or both may work.

Find your 3D card in the System section of the Windows 95 Control Panel. It will probably be under display adapters, multimedia or 'sound, video and game controllers'. Double-click on the card, and go to the drivers section. Click on 'update driver'. Let Windows 95 search for the new driver, and then point it to the directory in which you unzipped the driver. Click OK, and the driver will install.

or

Find your 3D card in the System section of the Windows 95 Control Panel. It will probably be under display adapters, multimedia or 'sound, video and game controllers'. Click on the card and click remove. Then you can go to 'add new hardware' in the Control Panel, choose to search for the new hardware yourself, choose Display Adapters, and then 'have disk'. Point it to the directory in which you unzipped the driver. Click OK, and the driver will install.

Hasbro Interactive cannot accept responsibility for any problems that may occur when installing new or incorrect drivers.

5.0	Fujitsu Lifebook 500 Users

We have found that users of the above laptop may experience problems when installing Mastermind. The Matshita UJDCD6711 CD-ROM drive it uses may suffer from an incompatibility issue. If you do experience problems, please contact your hardware manufacturer to obtain the latest drivers.

6.0	Keyboard Volume Control

Some laptops and Keyboards may have an in-built volume control system, which we have found to cause problems with Mastermind, so we therefore recommend that you do not use these keys whilst playing Mastermind.

7.0	General

We advise that all programs are closed prior to playing Mastermind.

We recommend that users of a 1mb graphics card play Mastermind using 256 colours to get the best performance.

8.0	Microsoft(R) Internet Gaming Zone (IGZ)

Players using a Minimum installation may experience game lag when playing Mastermind over the IGZ. We recommend that you use Typical or Full installations when playing over the IGZ.

Please note, as in all other Multiplayer functions of Mastermind, it is the game settings that the host makes which defines the game.

Mastermind will not accept names longer than 8 characters long, sorry but Mastermind will shorten your IGZ user name to fit within this scheme.

9.0	In-game Volume Control

Customers that have Sound cards with the following chipsets may not be able to alter the Mastermind music volume using the ingame music volume control:

Yamaha OPL-3A
Crystal Semiconductors
Ensoniq

Customers wishing to adjust the music volume should do so prior to starting the Mastermind game, using their desktop volume control. Double click the yellow Speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop. The Volume control panel should pop up. If the CD Audio selection is available then adjust the volume level to your requirement and then close the panel, checking that the mute tick-box is not highlighted first. If no CD Audio selection is shown then click Options, then Properties. The Properties panel will pop up in the section the says 'Show the following volume controls:' tick the box that says CD Audio and click OK. The CD Audio selection will now be available.

10.0 Other Internet Gaming areas

Regretably Mastermind will only support Microsofts Internet Gaming Zone. Although it may well recognise the multiplayer protocol for other gaming areas and in fact may show the option in the multiplayer selection screen, it is unlikely to allow play to happen. We would strongly recommend you uninstall the software relating to other gaming areas for the duration of Matermind play, this is to prevent you from being tempted to select the option, if one appears.
