                          [F-16 Fighting Falcon]

                                Version 1.3

                       Patch release: 29 January 1998
                             Win95 3Dfx version

 Notes:

    * This 3Dfx Patch will integrate with all language versions of F-16.
It makes use of the localization system developed for F-16 v1.3
which allows you to specify the language you wish to use.
[Localization instructions are near the end of this file]

    * This patch applies to any previous version of F-16. You don't need
to apply any previous patches before using this one.

    * The patch uses Glide 2.43 and is therefore 3Dfx-only (if your 3D
card doesn't support the Glide library then the patch will not
      work).
It's also important to note that currently the patch does not work
on Voodoo Rush cards. We have no adequate explanation for the
problem at the moment, but plan to develop a solution shortly.

 Features:

The main aim of this patch was to concentrate on speed increase,
therefore all changes are contained within the in-flight section of the
game. All anims and front end graphics are identical to a 'software'
 version.

Once in game you'll see that 3D objects remain the same, but the
terrain, although using the same texture bitmaps, has been enhanced with
true-colour and dynamic lighting. These and other features are listed
 here:

    * Possible average 50% speed increase
We have to say that this is an estimate, not hard fact! Those of
you familiar with the notes accompanying F-16's 1.3 patch will
understand when we say once again that results will depend somewhat
on the CPU powering the system and, as always, 'your mileage may
      vary'.

    * New 'Dynamic lighting' system
Terrain and oceans should appear with more 'depth' and shadows than
in the software-only version. In addition, our new 'Dynamic'
lighting system means that early morning and evening flights in
particular reveal a terrain with long shadows across the ground and
can make the negotiation of darkened valleys pretty treacherous!

    * Re-colourisation of the Korea textures
This has produced a more realistic (ie, green!) and extremely
      pretty Korean landscape.

    * True colour Alpha blending on constructs such as cockpits, rotor
      blades, F16 afterburner, etc

    * True colour Bilinear filtering and fogging effects
This provides such special effects as distance hazing, overcast
reduced visibility and varying levels of fog.

Installation:

   * UnZip the archive to your system, anywhere will do providing you
remember its location! A folder called f16_3dfx will be created in the
     location you specify.
   * Navigate to this new folder, then double click on the Setup icon.
   * Follow the instructions provided by the installer.

When installation is complete, you can run the game as normal. Important:
The CD's Autorun system will still launch the non-3Dfx version of the game.
To launch the 3Dfx version, use the new shortcut icon in the F-16 section
of your Programs menu, or click on its icon directly from your F-16
installation folder on your hard disk.

Setting correct language:

Note: You only need to set the language if you have not previously done so
after applying the 1.3 patch.

The system is quite flexible, and one of five languages can be specified
from the following list: english, american, french, german or italian.
Depending whether you use the DOS or Win95 version, there are different
ways to set the desired language version.

     Win95 Version

Method 1 - The "Run..." Method

   * Click the Start button and select "Run..."
   * Type the full path to F16, and include the "-l" (lower-case L)
parameter, followed immediately by a language from the list above. For
example, American users of iF-16 would enter:

       c:\i-magic\if16\f1695 -lamerican

This need only be done once. Load the game as normal the next time and
     any other time you play.

     DOS version

Method 2 - The Command Line Method

   * Use the 'CD' command to switch to your game directory.
   * Type 'F16', and include the "-l" (lower-case L) parameter, followed
immediately by a language from the list above. For example, American
     users of iF-16 would enter:

       f16 -lamerican

This need only be done once. Load the game as normal the next time and
     any other time you play.

     Win95 & DOS versions

Method 3 - The Command System Method

   * Load F-16 as normal. It will load with whatever the language is
currently set to; English, by default.
   * Enter the cockpit
   * Press Shift-M to activate the Command system.
   * Use the new "/language" command, followed by your choice of language
from the list above. For example:

       /language american

This need only be done once. The language has now been set and will
take effect the next time you load the game.
