---------------------------------------------------------------------

As one of sixteen great and powerful heroes, you travel in search of
conquest. Led by the desire to unleash havoc and destruction, you have
come to a mysterious world, a foreboding land, source of high
adventure. For strange and terrible stories tell of a place. A place
of such evil, hidden deep within this world, from whence no person has
returned alive. Your mission, riddled with danger, is to plunge
civilization back into the dark ages. And if you do succeed, such terror
lies beyond, that even the bravest adventurers may quail before the
ultimate test! Are you ready for THE CRUSADE?

The Crusade Begins
------------------
You decide to play the physical role, none of that intellectual wimpy
stuff, it's blood and guts for me. Give me a real weapon, something
that does real damage, a gun, a sword, I don't care about magic and
spell casting, I just want to get close to my enemies, and let
technology do the rest. THE CRUSADE is a true anarchic world, a world
where magic and technology are as one.

So you choose a fighting based class - awesome strength, devastating
weaponry, and lightening speed. Man are those guys going to get it!
Your not too concerned about the special abilities, spell casting,
and the like offered by other classes. You can do everything with
sheer physical strength, right? Its got me this far in all the other
games I've played. Is THE CRUSADE going to be any different? Maybe...

So you decide to create a party to accompany you on your CRUSADE. How
many friends do you have? You will need to make more friends before the
release, because 4 can play by modem and 16 on a network, or this
could be your lucky break to meet people. When we talk multiplayer,
we mean it!

Armed to the teeth, you begin THE CRUSADE....

The Virtual Reality World - Its Incredibly Realistic!
-----------------------------------------------------
You enter a circular room, a room like any other, dusty and unused. A
12 ft. high walkway, a ledge, leads south from here. On the eastern
wall is a four tiered spiral staircase matching the shape of the room.
The staircase, consisting of carefully inlaid 2 ft. by 2 ft. square
slabs of black marble, reaches upwards to a door on the fourth spiral.
At the base of the stairs resides two ivory pillars, each 30 ft. high
and 5 ft. in diameter. Each pillar is sculptured to resemble a male
figure. You decide to investigate...

Upon reaching the pillars, you hear a noise. Slowly you look around, up
through the spiralling layers of stairs. Your eyes catch a glimpse of
approaching steel - a bullet. For fear of life, you duck under the
ledge, praying the walkway will obscure your opponent's view. Time
passes, are they still there? With hesitation you emerge. Peering
upwards, you notice a hurried movement, a black robed man on the third
spiral. You take aim, and return fire. Your determined to make the
hooded figure pay for it's actions. Yes you can... in THE CRUSADE.

As you can see, THE CRUSADE's virtual reality engine is incredibly
detailed. We offer more than simply flat levels. Our world is so
intricate you can look anywhere you want, have any structure you want.
THE CRUSADE is not a game, it's a real three dimensional world.
Your mission is to live in this world (or is that just live?).

The Virtual Reality World - It's Totally Interactive
----------------------------------------------------
Reaching the top of the spiral staircase reveals a room that appears
to be a dead end corridor with no visible exists. This area seems to
be rather hot. Smoke can be seen rising from the corners of the floor,
and collecting near the ceiling. Two massive doors at the far end are
marked with a strange pattern, it seems to depict two wolf-headed men.
The doors are 4 ft. wide and made of 2 ft. thick iron. The doors and
floor in front of them are scratched and damaged, as if somebody, or
something, has tried unsuccessfully to force them open. The trail you
have been following seems to end here. There is no going back, you must
get through those doors. You try to find a conventional way to open
them, but there are no keyholes, handles, or hinges. It seems they
could move horizontally to open, but even that is debatable. You push
and pull at the doors. Nothing happens. If only you had some explosives.
In frustration you decide to ram them. Will Pure physical strength
prevail...?

Movement - When I move its so real!
-----------------------------------
You move back about 50 ft, take a good run up, you're ready to smash
those doors. But wait, you "reconsider your actions", and try to
stop... Too late. Have you ever heard of momentum? THE CRUSADE has!
You crash into the doors at top speed, bouncing off them. Dazed, you
climb to your feet. You wont try that again!

Go outside and try it out, because you will need to know basic physics
of the real world to survive in THE CRUSADE.

When playing THE CRUSADE, all movement is so real, that's because our
frame rate (the number of times the screen is updated per second) is
fast! Television does 19 page frames a second, we do 40, so where does
this leave any other game? This game is not designed to make you
upgrade your computer, just loose your social life.

Weapons - I Wish I Could Use That!
----------------------------------
Colliding with the doors didn't even make a dent. And for your effort
six bronze spears shoot fourth from a slotted trap on the far eastern
wall. The slots opened when you rammed the doors, so unless you
specifically checked for traps on that wall you had better duck! And
that goes for anyone with you as well.

You crouch to the ground. The spears whistle through the intervening
space between the doors and the eastern wall, just missing you.
Regaining your composure, after your near death experience, you
realize...I can use those spears!! So you go over and pick them up.
Why not? If its not bolted down you can use it as a weapon in THE
CRUSADE.

The 8 ft. long bronze spears radiate with a dim light. You decide to
try them out, throwing one down the corridor. To your surprise, they
are magic. If used in combat they will automatically hit the closest
opponent, doing five times normal projectile damage. You decide to use
a spear as your preferred weapon, placing your machine gun into your
backpack. With a shield in one hand and a magic spear in the other,
your ready to take on any opponent. You retrieve the test spear and set
out to re-tackle the door problem.

Spells, Spells, and more Spells
-------------------------------
Upon further investigation you discover that theses doors have been
forged by magic. No amount of pushing, pulling, shoving or ramming will
open them. If only you had tried magic to open the doors in the first
place, instead of violence. But who was to know? Isn't violence the
answer to everything?

After careful consideration with your party members, you decide to use
magic to remove the doors blocking your path. A fiery sheet of flame,
12 ft. long and 2 ft. wide, shoots fourth from the spell caster's
finger tips, hitting the doors. To your amazement the column of fire
rebounds, engulfing the caster. Scratch one spell caster. He should
have known better! Items and spells that cause damage will merely
rebound and ricochet off most magical doors, having no effect on them.
You have to think to survive in THE CRUSADE.

How do you get through these doors? How do you get your spell caster
back? More magic? Do you try a teleport spell to go around the doors,
a key spell to open them, or some other type of spell? What would
you do?

There are a myriad of spells available. Spells can be learned, but
you can't remember everything, and some spells are too complex for you
at first. But with experience and patience all will come. The same
goes for weaponry.

THE CRUSADE offers a truly interactive environment, more than just
pushing buttons and opening doors. A box gets in the way, you move it.
You stand on a staircase to rest, it rises from the ground. You walk
through a door maybe a sliding wall will crush you. You lower yourself
to avoid a blade, but are you too late... What else would you expect
from a real game?

The First Encounter
-------------------
After considerable trail and error the doors swing open revealing a
room well-lit by torches and lamps. This room is smoke filled, and the
dying embers of a recent fire can be seen near a pile of wood in the
northern corner. In the center of the room is a 50 ft. square raised
platform, made from ancient granite stonework. The raised platform
houses an entrance to a pit leading to an underground network of
passages. This appears to be a torture chamber. Empty cells occupy the
four odd-angled corners of the room. A hooded figure, dressed in black
robes, stands before an old man shackled to the northern wall. The old
man appears to be battered and bruised, could he be the spell caster?

You have been waiting for a long time to confront the hooded figure,
ever since your first encounter on the spiral staircase. Here it
comes, it has a helmet protecting it's head, plate mail on it's torso,
a shield on one arm and a broadsword in the other. This will be
something, you think, as all past opponents have never looked so well
armored. Your only chance is to disable the sword arm. You take aim
with the magic spear, you knew it would come in handy when you picked
it up. You launch it. Your opponent sees the oncoming spear, attempts
to side step it, but to no avail, its magic. Direct hit. It reels back
in pain.

After regaining it's composure, it continues the attack. In furious
desperation you throw your shield to the ground and retrieve the
machine gun from your backpack, release the safety, and let fly with
a burst of gun fire. Bullets ricochet off the ancient stonework.
Second thoughts begin to enter your mind. Maybe you should run, run to
survive? But how can you leave the poor tortured soul chained to the
wall? Life and death choices are a reality in THE CRUSADE. We suggest
you run, but hey, this is only a suggestion, it's up to you.

THE CRUSADE's world is populated with more than mere sprites. Opponents
are so real, its scary. You cast a spell at them, they duck. You
attack them, disabling an arm. You see them, exactly as they are. This
goes for the entire world, and why not?

The Virtual Reality World - It's Always Different!
--------------------------------------------------
Do you think you can learn THE CRUSADE by dying and restarting the
game at the beginning? Think again. Next time you are re-born,
everything is different, and only slight memories of past lives
remain. No two worlds will ever be the same, but all are just as
deadly. The knowledge based system that automatically generates the
world will ensure this. But think of the advantages, how can you
get bored if nothing is the same? There will always be a new world
to explore.

To survive in THE CRUSADE's ever changing world, you will need
lightening fast reflexes, the best strategies, unrelenting
determination, and an iron constitution. But then again, maybe you
just need help! :)

Virtual Reality Controls - Take The Advantage
---------------------------------------------
Your in multiplayer mode. Your opponent approaches tapping commands
furiously at the keyboard. You sit back and laugh. You have a superior
advantage. Something no level of hand-eye co-ordination can match. You
engage the combat with your Virtual Reality helmet. You opponent
doesn't stand a chance. And Why? Because you can do it in THE CRUSADE.
All major virtual reality input devices will be supported, what else
would you expect?
