GETTING STARTED:
----------------

Before you play INCUNABULA, you must run the SETUP program. Remember to
run SETUP any time you move INCUNABULA to a different directory or change
sound cards. After running SETUP, you may start playing by double-clicking
on the 'Incunabula' icon in Win95 or running ISTART.EXE from DOS.

HOW TO PLAY INCUNABULA:
-----------------------

ARROW KEYS: move character, move through menu choices
ENTER KEY: brings up action menu, selects menu choice
ESCAPE KEY: cancels menu option, exits game

TALKING: Simply walk into the person you wish to talk to. The
dialog will appear on screen. Press any key after you
have read the message, and a list of possible responses
is given. If a person offers the "what about..." option,
it means you can type in a specific keyword to get valuable
information from the character. Select "bye" to end the
                conversation.

BUYING/SELLING: Walk into the merchant or into a counter directly in front
of the merchant. If you select "buy" you will be shown a
list of the merchant's wares and their prices. Selecting
"sell" will bring up a window showing the contents of your
pack. Use the up or down arrow key to scroll through the
items in your pack. The item next to the ">" is the one
selected. Next to each character's name a button will
appear when buying. A green button means that character
can use or equip the selected item. Red means they can't.

CASTING SPELLS: NON-COMBAT: Press enter to bring up the action menu.
Select CAST. A list of current members in your party will
be shown along with the spells they know. Select the spell
to cast. For spells that require a single recipient, you
will then be asked to select the character on whom the spell
		is to be cast.

NOTE: Spells are learned by talking to certain characters or
reading special signs. Everyone in the party who is able to
cast a certain spell will learn it at that time.

USING ITEMS: NON-COMBAT: Press enter to bring up the action menu.
Select USE. A list of all the usable items in your inventory
will be displayed. Select the one to be used. If it is a
potion or another object that requires a recipient, a menu
will pop up to let you select the desired character.

Doors and keys do not need to be "used". If you walk into
a door and no key is needed, it will open automatically.
If a key is needed, it will tell you which key opens it.
If you have the required key, the game will tell you
which key was used to open the door. Likewise chests,
buttons, levers, etc. are all used by walking in to them.

PARTY OPTIONS: EQUIPPING ITEMS: After buying weapons, armor, or jewelry,
they must be equipped to be of any use. Select "Equip"
from the Party menu to bring up the equipment screen.
Choose the character you want to equip with an item. Next,
you can choose to either equip, remove, or drop an item.
Choose "equip" and a cursor will appear in your inventory
area. Items that the selected character may equip are
highlighted. Move the cursor to the desired item and press
enter. That item will be equipped (if allowed) and any
the character's affected statistics will be updated. (See
PLAYER STATS) Currently equipped items do not need to be
removed before the new item is equipped. Choosing to
remove an item places the cursor in the equipped items area.
The item selected is un-equipped and placed in your
inventory, if there is room. Dropping an item permanently
removes it from your inventory. It is lost forever, so
                be careful.

STATS: Choosing the "Stats" option from the Party menu shows
your entire party at a glance, including health, magic,
                personal statistics, and equipped items.

LEAD: Enables you to select the lead character, or the
party member that you control on screen. Different
characters have different abilities when you control them.
This command does not affect the party's battle order.
(NOTE: This feature is disabled in the evaluation version.)

LOAD/SAVE GAME: Select "Game" from the action menu. Choose "Load" or
"Save". The saved game screen will appear, showing
current health, location, chapter, and party members.
Select the slot to load from or save to, and press enter.

COMBAT: Sooner or later you will have to fight something - probably
many somethings! The combat screen will appear with the
monsters on the left and your party and stats on the right.
An option menu will come up for each member of the party,
allowing that character to fight, cast a spell, use an item,
or attempt to run away. To attack a creature, select "fight"
and move the yellow arrow to the desired target and press
enter. Same process for casting a spell or using an item,
except that you first choose an item or spell from your list.
Be aware that you can fight, cast, or use an item on ANY
monster or party member, so make sure you don't inadvertantly
injure one of your own members or heal a monster! If a
party member chooses to flee, the entire party will
perform a "speed-enhanced retrograde movement to the rear"
                if the attempt is successful.

After entering the commands for all party members, combat
follows. Each character attacks, based on their individual
speed. Faster characters and monsters attack first, followed
by the slower ones. In addition, if a monster's or
character's speed is significantly greater than that of its
target, it may get to attack more than once.

Eventually, one party overcomes the other, or you decide to
run away. If you win, your acquired gold and experience
will be displayed, along with any level advancements. If
your entire party is wiped out, the game reloads from your
                last saved position.
