            ATTENTION!
This game is FUN. It is NOT supposed to be
a breakthrough in programming techniques or
a game that impresses the professionals...
It is just a fun game - something which
a lot of of games lack. They're too busy
trying to impress us with SVGA graphics,
video clips and enough speech to sink an
aircraft carrier, and they forget that you
won't play it if the gameplay's crap, no
matter how good anything else is.

So welcome to HEAD to HEAD, a fast-paced,
            fun game for two players.

             So there...

So if you have just finished writing your novel in Windows and
you have a game of Head to Head to celebrate and Windows crashes
as a result (which it may do). Your life's work will then be
destroyed - but you can't sue me because of the disclaimer above.
Ha - you should have saved it anyway!

THE GAME

With all the legal gubbins over with, we get down to the subject of this doc.
Basically Head to Head is a game for two players only (although a computer
opponent may be added in a future version). Each of you whizz around the
screen in the craft of your choice. There are eight different sets of
characters you can choose, varying from attack helicopters to superheroes, and
even gods! To move through menus, press the keys marked in YELLOW.

For all eight sets of characters the control mechanism is:

Player 1 (Keyboard)

Q - Accelerate (let go of key to decelerate)
A - Fire (holding down will NOT result in a long salvo of shots)
Z - Rotate anticlockwise
X - Rotate clockwise

Player 2 (Keypad)

* - Accelerate (let go of key to decelerate)
9 (PgUp) - Fire (holding down will NOT result in a long salvo of shots)
4 (Left) - Rotate anticlockwise
6 (Rght) - Rotate clockwise

Each set of characters is slightly different from the rest (apart from the
way they look and sound!). For example, the blobs are smaller and more
manoeuverable, and the planes cannot stop in mid-air!

MEMORY REQUIREMENTS

This game should run on most people's computers, because it needs about 520K
of base memory. However, if you're having trouble getting the sound to work,
the game will use EMS, if available.

SOUND SETUP

You can setup the game to produce fantastic music and sound effects on all of
the following sound cards:

Sound Blaster (V1,V2,Pro and 16)
Gravis Ultrasound
Pro Audio Spectrum

Type SETUP in the Head to Head directory to configure the game to your sound
system. No PC speaker sounds have been implemented - after all, you can pick
up a Sound Blaster compatible sound card so cheaply now... I did!

If you don't know what settings your sound card has, then you should do.
If you don't however, Type SET at the Dos prompt and look for a line which
says BLASTER=A:??? D:? I:? T:? (if you have a Sound Blaster). The numbers
after A: D: and I: are the base I/O address, the DMA channel and the IRQ level
for your sound card. If you don't see this line and you have absolutely no
idea, well....um....load up another game on which you know the sound works
and use those settings!

If you have a slow computer, ie. an old 386SX-12 with a crap video card, and
an amazing sound card, ie. 16-bit stereo 44kHz, then you may find that having
the sound quality level set to "Super-High" will slow down the game a tad.
To solve this, either buy a new motherboard with a decent CPU on it (in fact,
do this anyway - I picked up a Vesa LB motherboard with a 486SX-33 CPU for
about 50 second hand. Yes, OK its not all that fast compared to a
Pentium Pro P200 but its a lot cheaper!), or you could just set the sound
quality level to "High","Medium", or even "Low", if things are looking bleak.

REGISTERING

This game is * C H E A P * to register! Do it NOW! Its only 5!
Why is it so cheap? Well, I'm a poor student trying to raise cash to help
subsidise the monetary problems of university life, and my belief is that
too many people get copies of shareware programs and find that they're about
35 to register and so don't bother. For this game, however, I don't think
that many people will mind parting with a fiver...

The shareware version only includes two of the eight scenarios, but you get
a taster of what the full game is like.

When you register you will recieve a set of pass codes that will:
Unlock the full version of the game,
Get rid of the "Why Register?" screen,
Encrypt the game with your name, so that in the unlikely event of head trauma
and resulting amnesia, Head to Head will tell you your name.

Print out REGISTER.TXT and fill in the survey so I can write games that work
better with the PC equipment of the masses.
For orders outside Europe, send an extra 1 for postage.
I will be getting an email address soon(ish) so it may be possible to send
your registration codes via the net in the future...This will most likely be
in the next version of Head to Head.
