                              Football Manager
                              -----------------

In this game, you are manager for an English football (soccer) team. A maximum
of six persons can playthe game simultanously, as manager for different teams.
In order to play you need a VGA monitor.

After choosing your language, each manager shall choose his/her teams. When
this is done, you have to choose your players. This can be done by typing
their names, or choosing from a list of names. All teams can have a maximum of
20 players, and a minimum of 13 players. It is recommended, though, to have
at least 15-16 players in case of injury.

For each player you must indicate his position (keeper, defence, midfield etc.)
and offer him a contract. Whenever there is money invloved in this game, we're
always using English pounds (). Weekly salary is paid to the player every
week, while match salary is paid for each match he plays. Both salaries should
be dependent of the teams division, and the players skill.

After choosing all the players, the fun can begin. Matches are played in both
cups (League and FA), as well as league matches. Before each match you must
choose what bonus to offer your players. This bonus is given to all of the
playing dudes if they win the following game. In case of draw or loose, no
bonus is paid. The function of the bonus is the encourage the players to give
100% all the time. Most people perform better if promised a reward, and so is
the intention with the bonus in this game. Of course, the effect of the bonus
is not unlimited. For every player the bonus is not the primary measure of
their performance, but more a way to get a little extra. Just like the
salaries, bonuses should be dependent of the team's division.

After choosing your bonus offer, you must select which players should enter
the field. You do this with your left mouse button, and can buy players if you
do not already have 20 players. When your team is complete, click OK.
NB! There should always be 11 players and 2 reserves chosen. Make sure the
players chosen agrees with the chosen formation.

When choosing a formation, the players available is of course important. But
a few other considerations should be taken into account. It is pretty obvious
that 5-3-2 normally creates a stronger defense than 4-3-3. 3-5-2 puts a lot of
pressure on the midfielders. If these are in good shape, able to keep it all
up, you'll get both a strong defense and a poisonous attack. However, if they
are weaker, your team will loose weight in both ends of the field. 4-2-4 is a
formation rarely used in reality, since it gives a weaker midfield. It can
typically be used when you expect to control the game anyway, and want to
really put pressure on the opponents defense.

So, what happens if you have to put a player out of position ? In football,
the midfielders are considered all-rounders. A midfielder can often play both
defense and forward without screwing up, while a keeper can hardly be put
anywhere else than in the goal. Both forwards and defenders can play out of
position without weakening the team very much, but they probably play best
at their designated place. Alltogether this means that the keeper is the
only real fragile part of the team.

As a manager you must of course take care of both your players and your
economy. If the board is not happy with the way you are taking care of
business, they may fire you.

All juniors are displayed with their ages, while there is no way to find the
ages of other players. The simulation of this game is not based upon the ages
of players. This means that you do not have to worry about the ages of your
players, since this is irrelevant. For the juniors, however, the age is taken
into consideration during their first season on your team. A young player is
less experienced than an older one, and is therefore expected to need more time
to adjust to a higher level of competition. This does not only go for the
physical aspect, but also for all tactical considerations.
