Instructions for activating sound with BRIDGE CREW version 1.12d

Sound is run out of one of the BCTERM terminals (usualy BCTERM-A)

To use sound with the program BCTERM several conditions
must be met:
1. The terminal running BCTERM must have a Soundblaster card.
2. The Sound files must be in .VOC format (some are supplied).
3. The total size of all files must fit into memory.
4. The SBSIM driver must have been previously loaded (once only).
5. The SBSIM.CFG file must be configured correctly (see below).
6. The BCTERSET program must be run to tell BCTERM the sound card is there.
7. The version of bridge crew must be 1.12a or higher to get sound.
The version of bridge crew must be 1.13b or higher to get
beam, missile and other sounds marked with **.

NOW FOR DETAILS

1. The terminal running BCTERM must have a Soundblaster card.
We have only tested genuine Soundblaster cards and its supplied drivers
(SBSIM and CT-VOICE). While in theory you could use any compatible card
you will require the files SBSIM.COM and CT-VOICE.DRV supplied with the
   Soundblaster.

2. The Sound files must be in .VOC format.

The following sound files are supplied:
     BC1.VOC - Hit on ship
     BC6.VOC - Condition Green
     BC7.VOC - Condition Red
     BC8.VOC - Condition Blue
     BC9.VOC - Condition Yellow

These must be copied into the C:\BCTERM directory on the PC
     running BCTERM with The soundblaster
     eg >COPY BC*.VOC

As far as we know all users customise their own sounds. Most start
with the above and then slowly put together their own suite of
sounds often recorded from their favourite source.

3. The total size of all files must fit into memory.
This will vary from machine to machine; usually about 64K.
We have no idea what would happen if you loaded an
individual sound file of greater than 32000 bytes.
The duration of all sounds should be less than 2 seconds.

4. The SBSIM driver must have been previously loaded.
Loading SBSIM twice is bad, for this reason it is normal to load
   the driver in the autoexec.bat

SBSIM.COM is usualy found in c:\SB\SBSIM and is run
   by the following commands
   >cd c:\SB\SBSIM
   >SBSIM

When sbsim is run it will require CT-VOICE.DRV which is
   usualy found in C:\SB\DRV

5. The SBSIM.CFG file is usually found in c:\SB\SBSIM.

The SBSIM.CFG file must contain the lines:
   [MemVoice]
   DMABufferSize=8
   ExtendedMemory=off
   SBSIMhandles=10

6. The BCTERSET program must be run to tell BCTERM the sound card is there.

Run the program BCTERSET.EXE on BCTERM-A - it is found in the
   directory C:\BCTERM

This program is best used with a mouse
(watch the serial port - it may not have a mouse in it!)

Take the menu option CHANGE (click mouse on top Line)
Click on the field sound type in use
   Select soundblaster
   click on OK
   Take the menu option FILE
   Take the menu option SAVE
   Take the menu option FILE
   Take the menu option EXIT

You have now advised BCTERM that a sounblaster is in use. When
it next runs it will look for SBSIM.COM and activate the bridge
   crew sounds.

7. The version of bridge crew must be 1.12a or higher to get sound
The version of bridge crew must be 1.13b or higher to get
beam, missile and other sounds marked with **

NOTE - SBSIM and CT-VOICE are supplied by Creative Labs with
       soundblaster cards

NOTE - Our testing covered sound files of 1 to 2 seconds duration
The program could behave unpredictably for sounds of
        longer duration.

NOTE - When you install your soundblaster card the following DOS
       environment variables are setup
BLASTER and SOUND these will vary from system to system but
should be configured as described in the soundblaster
       documentation.

NOTE - The easiest way to test sounds is to change your condition
       eg >CONDITION GREEN
       or
          >CONDITION BLUE

NOTE - It does not matter how many PC's are running BCTERM, only one
should have sound enabled. (ie BRIDGE CREW only supports one
       BCTERM terminal with sound)
