WHAT?
-----

Congratulations! You are really reading this.

You have NERO 3 and now you want to know how to use it?

You already noticed those "fireworks" when started the program, and
that you could continue by pressing any key of your keyboard? It was
said there, but you didn't read it: "USE ARROW KEYS AND ENTER TO MOVE
AND ESC FOR MENU." Right?

MOVING YOUR PIECES
------------------

When program starts, it's your turn to move. You are white. Place the
cursor on the piece, you want to move and PRESS ENTER. Then place the
cursor on the square you want to move that piece to and PRESS ENTER AGAIN.
Then wait until computer has moved, and make your next move. And so on.

Frames of the clocks show you whose turn it is. When computer is
thinking its clock has red frames, and its time runs. When it's
your turn, PLAYER's clock has green frames, and PLAYER's time is running.

When computer is thinking you can INTERRUPT it by pressing ESC-key
and force it to move immediately.

ABOUT THE MENU
--------------

Go to the menu by pressing ESC-key.

PRESS C,N,L,V,B,S,W or Q to do following things. (ANY other key,
if you want to go away from MENU.)

C = COMPUTE! means that the computer must make the next move. Sides are
switched and the board is turned.

N = NEW GAME starts a new game. If you had switched sides (by COMPUTE!)
and computer had white pieces, it will have them also in the new game.

L = CHANGE LEVEL Choose the number of the level you want. IN levels 0-5
average move time is (5 sec, 10 sec , ... ) Level 6 is infinite mode
(exactly 30000 minutes per move) and if you choose it, you most
probably have to interrupt computers thinking after some minutes/
hours/days and force the computer make a move BY PRESSING ESC.
Levels 7-9 are 'ALL MOVES IN X MINUTES'-type. Both sides have same time
controls. If either side loses on time, it's announced by the text
"Lost on time" and beeping sound. In this case Nero doesn't start
automatically a new game. (Like it does after mates and draws.)
It shows you the menu and you can decide, if you want to start a new
game, change the level or just skip it ignoring that time is up and
continuing the game. In this last case you will be shown 'time up'-
message and menu after each move made. So I recommend starting a new
game or changing the level after time loss.

V = VIEW/HIDE SCORES You can switch, whether you want to see some
search information or not. In my opinion it's fair to switch this off.
While thinking Nero shows the best move it has found in each depth in
its iterative deeepening process. When Nero's move is made, it'll show
the score of that move and the number of legal moves it had in the
position. In the first 13 moves the text 'Book' announces that you have
played a line included in one of Nero's 300 opening lines. If Nero shows
a positive score, it thinks it has better position. If its score is
negative, you have better game. Nero's scores are based almost only for
material situation. Score is 1.0, if it's one pawn up, and so on. Score
near 300.0 shows that you will be mated soon! If it's almost -300.0,
you will have a mate in few moves!

B = BEEP ON/OFF  Doesn't need any explanation?

S = SETUP BOARD Make your own positions. If you want to play a game
without NERO's opening book, just go to SETUP and do nothing to
the initial position. IN THE SETUP WHITE IS ALWAYS AT BOTTOM.

W = WATCHER MODE sets the computer off. You can play two humans games
OR give initial moves of a game and continue with computer by COMPUTE!
After each move the board is turned. (You may first feel this a little
confusing, and also the fact that Nero doesn't show the coordinates of
the board, but I think this helps you to learn better to visualize them
by yourself.)

Q = QUIT Back to the DOS.
