NOTE: This pak contains Soldier of Fortune Inc. start/select skill 
Map and the SOF1 map. SOF2 and SOF3 maps will follow shortly to 
Complete this mission. Watch for them starting early November.

STORY:

In the summer of 1988, Matt Shepherd led an elite commando team 
on a top-secret mission to a classified location in South America.  
Intelligence had it that an unscrupulous group of genetic scientists 
were tampering with the very laws of nature in an effort to provide 
rebel forces with a deadly bio-weapon.  Shepherd's orders were 
simple: scope out the facility, determine the nature of the threat, 
and, if necessary, reduce it to rubble. In the end, Shepherd was the 
only man to return alive.  His story was incredible, unbelievable...
unspeakable...until now.


When Shepherd made it back and told his commanding officers what he 
had seen, they were unfazed.  He later learned that, soon after his 
escape, government agents had landed in the area and collected all 
remaining documents, experiments and the bizarrely twisted corpses 
of the creatures Shepherd had destroyed.  He was never asked to file 
a report, he was never even questioned -- it was almost as if the 
mission had never happened.

He now only relives the experience in his nightmares.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:
* Explore the helicopter a bit after the fighting dies down
* Watch for bubbles...they can indicate underwater passages etc.
* The start scene is slightly difficult in skill 0 but just hide out
  and let your buddies do a lot of the fighting and you'll be ok.
* Talk to the crucified Amazonians and the poor chap on the fire, they
  will give you clues [if necessary] and fill in the story for you.

Known Bugs/non-bugs	
		- You MAY get slightly squish damaged in the 
		helicopter at the start of SOF1. If so, just stay to 
		the back of the helicopter and slightly away from your 
		'buddies' and the sides of the chopper.
		- Until you have the SOF2 pak you will have the game 
		lock-up if you push the <spacebar>after the credits at 
		the end of SOF1. This is because it's targetted to a 
		level you don't have yet:] Just use the <esc> key 
		instead.
		-The monster count is off in this version?...see above
			  
Distribution: This level may be electronically distributed 
only if sof.txt is included and at NO CHARGE to the recipient, 
and may not be used or modified in any way without written 
permission from the author. I would also like to request 
anyone who reviews and/or lists "SOLDIER OF FORTUNE INC." at

*** HOW TO RUN "Soldier Of Fortune Inc." *** 
(with the reg. version of Quake)
	- you should allocate 16 megs to Quake. Info on changing
          that is in your Quake>techinfo.txt or see below.
	
As per following diagram, create a directory in Quake parallel to Id1 
named 'soldier' and extract the pak0.pak contained in 'sofbeta.zip' 
directly into the space directory. 
* DO NOT extract into the id1 directory *

Start quake with the parameter: QUAKE -game soldier

THEN...select SINGLE PLAYER then select NEW GAME

NOTE: I am unfamiliar with Quake commands when running directly
from DOS...if you have any problems, most major SP Review sites have 
good info on running Quake add-on levels and PAKS.

+++ SPOILER WARNING - READ NO FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT HINTS +++

SOF Start Map
* HQ room. Push chair that is by the wall towards the file cabinet. 
Jump onto the upper part of the chair back and then onto the file 
cabinet. Behing the vent there is a silver key that will let you 
out of the room. Select your skill in the security room. Security
door is opened by jumping up on chair in HQ room and opening the MCU 
[Mobile Command Unit]. Push button on security room wall to open
bedroom door.... and then go to bed.

SOF1
* There is a large boulder blocking the ledge path above where the 
helicopter lands. You must find your way through an underwater passage 
to a waterfall. Behind the waterfall is a rocket launcher which will 
remove the rock from the path and allow you on your way.
* Explore the helicopter a bit after initial fighting stops.
*To open the large wood gate after the indian village...find the wood 
mask totem on the wall of one of the huts in the village. Get close to 
it and it will say "underwater grate opened". Then go to into the pond 
in front of the village and there you'll find an underwater passage. 
Take a big breath then swim down it to a little underwater room. Make 
sure to get close to the red-painted face on the wall there and a 
message will say, "large gate has opened". Then swim out the heading 
the same direction you were going as you swam in.
* There is a barrel with a red explosive warning sign on it near the 
level's end. This MUST be shot with a rocket to blow a hole in the 
rock wall.
* There is only one silver keycard required and it's to open the last 
door. It is in a pit trap at the end of the wooden bridge. The pit has 
two stakes that skewer you unless you jump onto the lowest one to get 
out of the other one's way. Then jump up on the other one and out.
