(1) Introduction

(1.1) What's Quake done 100% Quick?

Quake done 100% Quick is a movie by the QdQ team that was requested many
times by people who watched our previous movies, "Quake done Quick" and
"Quake done Quicker" (available from our web page). It is a run of
Quake on Nightmare skill, going through all the levels (including the secret
ones) and getting all the kills and all the secrets, as fast as possible.

Since this is much longer and involves a lot more careful aiming than our
previous speedruns, don't expect every second to be as optimized as QdQr -
we are sure you will still enjoy it very much, though. If you think you can
beat any of the demos in Qd100Q, go ahead and try, and send us your demo if
you succeed. Make sure you use QdQStats to start with the same stats we
started with.

There will be a movie version of this run, filmed from a camera
perspective with special effects. At the time of writing some refilming
remains to be done. Once released it will be available for download
from our page at <http://PlanetQuake.com/QdQ/>.

(1.2) Installation instructions

Unzip qd1q7245.zip into a directory under Quake and then run:
quake -game qd1q7245 (or whatever you called the directory). This will start
the demo. To play from one specific level, type in the console:
playdemo <levelname> - replace <levelname> with the level (e.g. playdemo e2m4
or playdemo end). To start the whole demo from the console, type:
playdemo qd1q7245.

Previously, we've found that some versions of Quake exhibited unusual
playback problems when playing multilevel demos such as this one. We
believe we have now fixed all such problems, but cannot test this demo
on every existent version of Quake. If you *do* get a crash, you can
restart Quake from the level where it crashed with
quake -game qd1q7245 +playdemo <levelname>
and this should continue as you require.

The utilities we used included:

LMPC by Uwe Girlich (http://www.physik.uni-leipzig.de/~girlich/games/) for
decompiling & recompiling demos so we could use the convenient LS format.
Also Uwe's DEM specs were very useful for us in creating our own tools.

A utility by Stefan Schwoon to do 90% of the editing needed to make such a
run. (This is currently not publically available yet, so don't ask for it.)

Some in-house utilities; DemoRelise and QdQstats to make demos that fit into a
continuous run.

DEMentED to do some more quick and easy demo editing.

(2) More details about the movie

(2.1) Timing

Just a quick explanation of why we say we completed Quake in 72:45.
We recorded every demo separately and then connected them together,
adding the times for the four episodes plus the end level.

(2.2) How the run was recorded

We recorded each demo separately, on skill 3 (Nightmare), of course without
any cheating. To start with the correct stats we ended the previous level
with, we used a QuakeC patch that allowed us to select the statistics we
started with.

We recorded Quake as one big run because Quake was made to be played each
episode in a row, and not as separate levels. There are no weapons in the
higher levels, because you should have them already from previous ones. And
we did it by connecting single demos together because the final product is a
lot more interesting that way and entertaining, and we could include some
very cool tricks that we couldn't do had we recorded it in one sitting.

The E4M1 demo was originally Yonatan's winning entry for Kuha's Sewer
System Challenge, a contest run by the Quake Marines clan.

We made three small fixes to bugs in Quake with relation to 100% demos.
First, we fixed the fish bug so that fish no longer count twice in the
total kills figure. Also, we changed the total kills possible for e2m4
from 78 to 74 since there are 4 scrags in the level which cannot be
killed (a typo prevents them from teleporting in.) Lastly we made the
demo notice when we kill Shub: Quake has a bug with registers Shub as
a possible kill but doesn't give you the credit for killing her.
