--------------------------------------------------------------

1.  INTRODUCTION AND TERMINOLOGY

Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a stand-
alone program; there is no special executable file you would run to
start FM StepUp. To use the program, you need to properly install
and set it up and, every time you run File Manager, FM StepUp will
run automatically.

FM StepUp *CANNOT* be installed 'locally', to be used by a single
user; this is because File Manager itself is a 'shared' Windows
application, and if an add-on to File Manager is installed, it is
shared by all users of the system. However, every user may
'deactivate' FM StepUp if s/he does not want to use it, after the
software is installed by the System Administrator. Other users will
be able to continue using FM StepUp.

To make the software available for use, the following steps must be
performed:

1. Copying all files from the FM StepUp package into a directory,
   which must be at least 'readable' by all users. It is
   recommended to use a separate subdirectory of the 'win32app'
   directory for this purpose. This step should be performed by the
   system administrator, or another user, who has an appropriate
   privilege level. The Setup utility may be used to perform this
   step.

2. Registering FM StepUp in the System Registry as an add-on to
   File Manager ('enabling' FM StepUp). This step also should be
   performed by the administrator, since regular users are usually
   not allowed to modify the shared part of Registry. The Setup
   utility may be used to perform this procedure.

   After this step is complete, FM StepUp is loaded and used
   automatically whenever a user runs File Manager. Each user, is
   able, however, to deactivate FM StepUp and then activate it again
   any number of times, depending on his or her own preferences.

3. Purchasing a license for continued use of FM StepUp and,
   after paying the license fee and obtaining a registration code, entering the
   registration information into the Registry. If a site license is
   purchased, this step must be performed by the administrator. If
   an individual use license is obtained, this step is performed by
   the user (all other users in the same location will still be able
   to continue evaluation of the program and then register it
   independently on each other). The Setup utility may be used to
   perform this step.

   If a user decides that s/he does not want to use this program,
   s/he must deactivate it (using the Setup utility), and FM StepUp
   will not be loaded for this user. Other users will be able to
   continue using FM StepUp.

The rest of this document provides more detailed information on
performing the installation and registration procedures using
the Setup utility, included in the FM StepUp package. The following
terms are used throughout this text:

'currently installed version' -

   the version of FM StepUp which is currently available for use
   when you start the Setup utility. There may be no such a
   version, if no previous version of FM StepUp has been installed
   in the system before.

'version being set up' -

   the set of FM StepUp files from which the Setup utility is being
   run. All the files included in FM StepUp package must be kept in
   the same directory, and the Setup utility considers the set of
   files in the directory from which it is launched as the 'master'
   set of files. If you have a number of different sets of files
   (for instance, different versions of FM StepUp located in
   separate directories), you can set up each of them by running the
   Setup utility from the corresponding directory.

'enabling(disabling) FM StepUp' -

   making FM StepUp available for use by a certain group of the
   users. This procedure is performed by the system administrator,
   or some other user with the privilege level sufficient to modify
   the shared part of the Registry.

'activating(deactivating) FM StepUp' -

   instructing File Manager to load (or not to load) FM StepUp for
   an individual user. This procedure is performed by the user
   himself by running Setup.exe. It does not influence the
   availability of FM StepUp to other users.

'registering' -

   depending on the context, may mean one of the following:

   - purchasing a license for continued use of FM StepUp
     and obtaining a registration code. Please
     see file REGISTER.TXT for more information and order forms;

   - entering the registration code using Setup utility, and thus
     converting an evaluation copy of FM StepUp into a registered
     version;

   - registering FM StepUp as an add-on to File Manager in the
     System Registry. This is done automatically when you use Setup
     utility to install FM StepUp.

'power user' -

     any user with the privilege level sufficient to modify the
     shared part of the Registry (such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE).
     There may be a number of different user groups with such
     privileges; for the purposes of this text they are
     indistinguishable between each other.

'regular user' -

     any user who is not a 'power' one (see above).

FM StepUp comes with a convenient and flexible Setup utility. You
may run it using the 'File-Run' command of Program Manager or File
Manager, or double-clicking its icon. If you have a number of
different versions of FM StepUp, BE SURE to run Setup.exe from the
directory containing the version you want to set up! You cannot set
up a new version of FM StepUp by running Setup.exe from the old set
of files, if there is one.

After you run Setup.exe and click on the 'OK' button in response to
the 'Welcome' screen, the main screen is displayed, containing
information about the version of the software you are setting up and
directory in which it's located, the currently installed version, if
any, and the following buttons:

  Administrative Setup

  Individual User Setup

  Exit

The rest of this document provides detailed information on using
these options.

2. ADMINISTRATIVE SETUP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before anyone can start using FM StepUp, it must be installed by the
system administrator,  or  another  user,  whose  privilege level is
sufficient to modify the shared part of the Registry.  If  Setup.exe
is   run   by   a   user   without  the  necessary  privileges,  the
'Administrative Setup' button is grayed out and is not accessible.
After you press the 'Administrative Setup' button, a new screen pops
up, providing a number  of  choices  to perform various installation
procedures:
  Install -
     choose this button to quickly install FM StepUp in its  default
     configuration.   You  may  wish to use this facility if you are
     running Setup for the first time,  from a diskette or a CD-ROM.
     You will be prompted for a new directory  to  place  the  files
     into,  and  the  files  will be copied in the chosen directory.
     You will be  also  prompted  to  create  a  Program Group for a
     number of FM StepUp files, such as Setup.exe,  Readme.txt,  and
     some  others.   Finally,  FM  StepUp  will be registered in the
     Registry as an  add-on  to  File  Manager.   After this step is
     completed, FM StepUp is ready to  use  by  all  users  of  your
     system.
     Do  not use the 'Install' option if you have already placed all
     FM StepUp  files  in  the  destination directory.  Instead,
     choose the 'Enable' button to enable FM StepUp (see below).
     NOTE: FM StepUp uses CTL3D32.DLL file  to  produce  3D  effects
     when  displaying dialog boxes.
     If you do  not
     have  this  file  installed  in  your  system,  you  may do it
     manually, either  before  or  after  installing  FM StepUp.  To
     install  CTL3D32.DLL,  copy   it   into   your   WINNT/SYSTEM32
     directory.  Yes, it's *that* easy!
  Enable -
     use  this button to change the availability of FM StepUp to the
     users of your  system.   You  may  make the changes immediately
     after you have installed FM StepUp, or you may exit  Setup  and
     run it again later on to change the settings.
     After  you  choose  'Enable',  a  dialog  box  with a number of
     options is presented.  It is important  to keep in mind that if
     you are running Setup  from  a  directory  different  from  the
     directory in which the currently installed version of FM StepUp
     is  located,  then  pressing  'OK' in this dialog box will make
     version 'being setup'  the  'currently  installed' one.  If you
     want to change one of the settings in this dialog box, be  sure
     to  run  Setup from the directory where the currently installed
     version is located.
     By default, Setup makes FM  StepUp  available to all users.  If
     you leave it that way, each user will be able to deactivate  FM
     StepUp,  if  s/he does not want to use it, by running Setup.exe
     and performing the 'Individual  User  Setup' (see below in this
     file).
     The second choice also allows you to make FM  StepUp  available
     to  all  users.   The  difference  is  that  FM  StepUp will be
     initially activated and ready  for  use  only to 'power' users,
     whereas 'regular' users will need  to  explicitly  activate  FM
     StepUp by running Setup.
     The  third  choice  differs  from  the  previous two in that FM
     StepUp will  be  initially  deactivated  for  all  users of the
     system (including Administrator!).  Each user wishing to  start
     using FM StepUp, will have to run Setup and explicitely activate
     the software.  All users, both 'power' and 'regular' ones, will
     be able to activate FM StepUp.
     The  fourth  option  in  this group makes FM StepUp enabled and
     activated for 'power' users  only. None of the 'regular' user will be
     able to activate FM StepUp  for  his  or  her  own  use.   This
     option,  for  instance,  allows your organization to purchase a
     site license for use FM StepUp only by 'power' users.
     Finally, the fifth option  disables  FM  StepUp by removing the
     relevant information from the Registry.  Use this option if you
     wish to temporarily prevent all users from using FM StepUp,  or
     if  you  have  decided  to completely remove FM StepUp from the
     system.
  Register -
     use this button after you have purchased a site license for use
     FM StepUp  in  your  organization,  to  enter  the registration
     information from your Registration Acknowledgment.   After  you
     have completed this step, the name of your organization and the
     number  of  users  it is registered to will be displayed in the
     'About FM StepUp'  screen,  instead  of the words 'Unregistered
     copy'.  Please refer to REGISTER.TXT for  more  information  on
     purchasing a license for continued use of the software.
     NOTE:  if  you  have  purchased  a  license for individual use,
     rather than a site  license,  the registration information from
     your   Registration   Acknowledgment   (your   name   and   the
     registration code) must be entered in the Individual User Setup
     mode (see below in this file).
  Back... -
     this button returns you to the main screen.
3. INDIVIDUAL USER SETUP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Individual User Setup button on the main screen opens a dialog
box with a number of choices related to the user who is currently
logged on. Note that if the Administrative Setup has not been
previously done, or FM StepUp has not been enabled by the
administrator, the Individual User Setup button will be grayed out
and unavailable.

The first time the user chooses the 'Individual User Setup' button,
s/he is asked to enter his or her first name. After that a dialog
box with the following choices is displayed:

  Activate/Deactivate -

    choose this button to change the state of FM StepUp for the
    current user. If you deactivate FM StepUp, it will not be
    loaded by File Manager when you run it; all the other users will
    still be able to use FM StepUp as long as it is enabled (by the
    administrator, see the 'Administrative Setup' section above in
    this file). Every user may activate and deactivate FM StepUp
    for his/her own use any time and any number of times.

  Register/Unregister -

    use this button after you have purchased an individual use
    license, to enter the registration information
    from your Registration Acknowledgment. After you have
    completed this step, your name will be displayed in the 'About
    FM StepUp' screen, instead of the words 'Unregistered copy'.
    Please refer to ORDER.TXT for more information on purchasing
    a license for continued use of the program. Every user of the
    system may register FM StepUp for individual use independently
    on all the other users.

     NOTE: if you have purchased a site license for your
     organization, the corresponding registration information must
     be entered in the Administrative Setup mode (see above in this
     file).

  Back... -

     this button returns you to the main screen.

4. UNINSTALLING FM STEPUP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  If you do not wish to use FM StepUp,  you  may  deactivate  it  by
  running  Setup  and choosing 'Individual User Setup - Deactivate'.
  This will prevent File Manager  from loading FM StepUp during your
  sessions, while allowing other users to continue using it.  If you
  decide later on to start using FM StepUp again, you  may  activate
  it  in the same way: run Setup and choose 'Individual User Setup -
  Activate'.
  To completely uninstall FM StepUp  and  remove it from the system,
  please run Setup and enter the 'Administrative  Setup'  mode  (you
  must have an appropriate privilege level to do this).  Then choose
  'Enable'  and, when the dialog box pops up, select the last option
  - 'Disable for all  users'.   Finally, after exiting Setup, delete
  all  files  from  the  directory  in  which  you  have  previously
  installed FM StepUp.
5. TROUBLESHOOTING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The following information is provided to help if you encounter
problems when using FM StepUp for Windows NT.

5.1. File Manager suddenly fails to run
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
	If you are using the New Shell (Windows 95-ish) with WIndows NT
    3.51, make sure you are running the latest version of the shell,
    which can be downloaded from ftp.microsoft.com.  FM StepUp is
    known to fail with the first alfa-release of the shell, but runs
    well with the second one.
    If the above is not the case, disable FM StepUp by removing
    information about it from the Registry in one of the following
    ways:
    -  run  Setup  from  FM  StepUp  directory   and,   using   the
       'Administrative  Setup'  mode,  choose  'Enable', and then -
       'Disable for all users'.  Or, you can perform this operation
       manually:
    -  run Regedt32.exe (located  in your WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory)
       and find the following key:
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/
                Current Version/IniFileMapping/winfile.ini
       Find the value 'AddOns' under this key, it points to the key
       in the Registry which contains information about  addons  to
       File Manager.  By default, this location is specified as
          SYS:Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\File Manager\AddOns
       where  SYS:  stands  for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/.  Find
       this key; the values  it  contains  describe add-ons to File
       Manager, which are currently enabled in the system.
       FM StepUp is specified by the string variable  'FM  StepUp',
       which points to the location of file FMSUNT.DLL.  To disable
       FM StepUp, delete this value from the Registry.
       If,  after  you  have disabled FM StepUp with one of the methods
       described above, File Manager still fails to run, the problem is
       *not* related to FM  StepUp.   Please  refer  to your Windows NT
       documentation for troubleshooting information.
       If, however, the problem goes away after you  have  disabled  FM
       StepUp, it indicates that one of the following files, FMSUNT.DLL
       or CSLIBNT.DLL, has been corrupted by some reason.
       Solution:
       ~~~~~~~~~
       Delete all files from the directory in which you have installed
       FM StepUp and repeat the installation using the 'fresh' set of
       files (from the installation disk).

       Also, make sure that file CTL3D32.DLL in your WINNT\SYSTEM32
       directory is not corrupted.

5.2. File Manager still does not work properly
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If you have installed a newer version of FM StepUp in the system
    where a previous version was used, make sure that the 'old'  and
    'new'  files are not mixed: all files in the directory where you
    have installed FM StepUp should have the same date/time stamp.
    Another  possible  reason is the corruption of the user-specific
    configuration  data,  which  is  stored  by  FM  StepUp  in  the
    Registry.
    Solution:
    ~~~~~~~~
    run Regedt32.exe (located in your WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory) and
    find the following key:

        HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Chaosoft/FMSTEPUP.INI/

    delete the FMSTEPUP.INI subkey (all its subkeys will be deleted
    as well). All settings of FM StepUp will be automatically
    restored to their defaults next time you run File Manager.

5.3. Undefined function ... in module CTL3D32.DLL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    This message indicates that an  older version of CTL3D32.DLL
    is currently installed in your WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.
    Solution:
    ~~~~~~~~~
    install a newer version of this file (copy this file from the FM
    StepUp set of files into your SYSTEM32 directory) and reboot
    system.

5.4. This application uses CTL3D32.DLL which is not properly installed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    This  message  indicates that there is another copy of this file
    somewhere on your disk,  which  is  loaded prior to the 'master'
    copy installed into the SYSTEM32 directory.
    Solution:
    ~~~~~~~~~
    Perform a global search for the file CTL3D32.DLL on all your
    disks (you may wish to use the 'File-Search' command of File
    Manager for this purpose) and eliminate all the files found,
    except the one in the SYSTEM32 directory.
