Mika started his motor racing career at
the age of six, driving 50cc karts. By the
age of nine he was contesting the 100cc
Finnish Championship and became Finnish
Champion at the age of 11.

It was a title he was to win a further
four times. In 1986, Mika completed his
National Service - the 11 months he spent
in the army precluding him from any
serious racing.

Competition History


1987 - Despite a limited self-financed
       programme, Mikas first season in
       single-seated racing finished with
       runner-up trophies in the Finnish
       and Scandinavian Formula Ford 1600
       Championships. 

1988 - Having attracted sponsorship, he
       embarked on his first full season
       of Formula Ford 1600 competition,
       becoming European, Scandinavian and
       Finnish Champion. He was on pole 10
       times, won all 14 races he entered
       and set a new lap record at every
       circuit. 

1989 - Moved to the UK to contest the
       highly competitive British Formula
       3 Championship with Alan Docking
       Racing. A learning year, Mika
       scoring five 5th places and one 6th

1990 - Highly successful second Formula 3
       season, finishing runner-up in the
       British Championship with six
       victories and five 2nd places. He
       also scored a superb 2nd place in
       the Macau GP, considered to be the
       World Championship of F3. 

1991 - Without sufficient budget to secure
       a competitive drive in the European
       F3000 Championship, Mika started a
       new career in the All-Japan F3000
       Championship with a Yokohama-backed
       team, scoring one 6th place. 

1992 - Remained with the Japanese F3000
       team - best results a 4th and a 5th 

1993 - Another difficult season in a
       Japanese championship dominated by
       tyre development. Without the
       latest equipment, Mika recorded one
       6th place. 

1994 - The fourth season in Japan started
       well with 3rd place in the first
       round of the All-Japan F3000
       Championship.

       Mika made his Formula 1 debut at
       the Japanese Grand Prix, taking the
       uncompetitive Lotus to a
       magnificent 10th position.

       Lotus retained Mikas services for
       the final Grand Prix of the season
       in Australia, but he retired the
       car with mechanical problems. 

1995 - Signs for the Nokia Tyrrell Yamaha
       team.
