THE NEW FORMULA: RENAULT'S RS7
-----------------------------------------------------------

The Renault V10 RS 7 engine, which will be fitted to the
Mild Seven Benetton B195 for the first time this year, is
the latest in a long line of racing engines from the
championship winning manufacturer.

Renault is one of only two manufacturers to have won the
Formula One World Championship, the World Rally Championship
and the classic Le Mans 24 Hours. Today, Renault Sport
employs 150 personnel who, throughout the course of the
1994 season, built a total of 80 engines.

The 1995 Formula One technical regulations have meant a
reduction in engine size to three litres, necessitating a
complete rebuild of the cylinder unit.

The lower and narrower cylinder block incorporates all new
cylinder heads made of aluminium, with the cylinder block,
crank case and timing cover in light aluminium. The RS 7
continues to run with four valves per cylinder.

The engine itself retains its 67 degree V10 configuration
from the RS6, and its 623mm length. Having slimmed 10mm to
540mm in width, it has also shed approximately 3kg in
weight.

The reduction in engine size has also led to new moving
parts introduced with a view to reducing friction. The new
regulations have prompted a search by engine manufacturers
to find ways of reclaiming the power loss of around 15 per
cent caused by the change.

Renault Sport's Technical Director Bernard Dudot said:
"We've had to work really hard to help this! The new engine
size enables us to actually run the speed of the engine a
little bit faster, around 500 - 800 more revs per minute."

Magneti-Marelli have maintained their association with
Renault, whose engine retains the electronic engine
management and static ignition systems. They have also been
associated with the development of the new injection
computer and data logging unit. A major advance over the
RS 6 comes from the introduction of the electronically
controlled accelerator, which will not only help the
driveability of the engine, but also its sensitivity on
difficult circuits. "Last year's engine was very good."
added Dudot. "This year's will be even better!"
