========================================

Rubens Barrichello was born in San Paolo,
Brazil on 23 May, 1972 and is still today
the youngest driver on the Formula 1
circuit.

He began by go-karting at the age of 9 and
came second in his first race at the Sao
Paolo City Championship.

Before going on to becoming Brazilian
Junior go-karting champion in 1983 after
only two years in racing.

With a repeat victory the next year, he
graduated to Category "B" in 1985, winning
his home-town's championship and coming
fourth in the national standings.

In 1986, Barrichello moved up to Category
"A" karting, winning his city's
championships once again and taking the
national title, with repeats in 1987 and
1988.

In the interim, he also took the South
American title in the 125 cc category and
finished third in the World Karting
Championship, at the age of 15.

In 1989, Rubens began his long sponsorship
partnership with the Arisco food company,
entering the Brazilian Formula Ford
championships, taking fourth place in his
initial season. The following year, he left
for Europe and participated in the
Opel-Lotus Championship with the Draco
team.

With six victories, seven pole positions
and seven lap records, he easily won the
championship and moved straight into
Formula 3, with the West Surrey Racing team
in the British Championship. Once again, he
came out on top, with four victories, nine
pole positions and seven lap records.

In 1992, he finished third in the
International Formula 3000 Championship
with the Barone Rampante team, signing his
first Formula 1 contract in November of
that year with Jordan.

After only three races, Rubens was just shy
of climbing on to the podium when he
experienced fuel pressure problems, five
laps before the end of the European Grand
Prix in Donnington.

Nevertheless, he scored his first points in
Formula 1 racing in the next-to-last race
of the season in Japan.

At the opening Grand Prix race of the 1994
season in his native Brazil, Rubens was in
the points with a fourth place, following
up with a third place in the next race, the
Pacific Grand Prix.

By the end of the year he will have
attained fourth place four times and was
ranked sixth at the end of the season in
the drivers' standings.

In 1994, the 22-year old Rubens won his
first pole position at Belgian Grand, the
youngest driver ever to do so, and stepped
up on the podium for the first time at the
Prix in Aida.
