After graduation from senior high-school,
Ukyo trained as a mechanic at the Tsukuba
Circuit in Japan. That was in 1982 and 
marked the start of his career in motor
racing which saw him switch to driving - 
taking class and championships in FJ 1600,
after winning his very first race from pole
position.

COMPETITION HISTORY


1985 - Graduated to All Japan F3 Series
       with Nissan Hasemi Motorsports team
       and finished 6th in the championship. 

1986 - After visiting France the previous
       August and breaking the course
       record at the Formula Renault Racing
       School, Ukyo moved to France to
       contest the National Formula Renault
       Series, before moving up to the
       French F3 series in 1987. 

1988 - Returned to Japan to contest the
       Japanese F3000 Championship with
       BA-TSU Racing, finishing 11th. Raced
       at Le Mans 24 Hours for the first
       time with Courage Competition. 

1989 - A busy season with Ukyo in action
       for the Footwork Team in Japanese
       F3000, while entering four FIA
       International F3000 events in Europe
       and the Japanese Touring Car
       Championship. 

1990 - Beginning his successful partnership
       with CABIN, Ukyo finished 5th in
       Japans F3000 Championship with
       CABIN Racing. 

1991 - Ukyo s F3000 championship-winning
       year with CABIN. He scored two wins,
       three runner-up placings and was a
       top-10 finisher in every event, but
       for a single retirement. 

1992 - Performing well in his Formula One
       debut season with Venturi Larrousse,
       Ukyo twice finished in the top-10. 

1993 - With continuing support from CABIN,
       Ukyo moved to Tyrrell for his second
       year season of Grand Prix racing. 

1994 - The season which saw Ukyos
       potential expressed. Strong
       qualifying performance were followed
       by impressive races among the
       leaders. 

1995 - Ukyo drives for Nokia Tyrrell Yamaha
       in his third season with the team.
