EDDIE IRVINE

Edmund Irvine was born 10 November, 1965 in Newtonwards, Northern Ireland. In 1983, at the age of 17, he entered his
first race with his father's Crossle FF1600. He was an independent in the Irish and British FF1600 championships before being
given a factory car in 1987 by Van Diemen, with the backing of Duckhams, winning both the RAC Championship and the Esso
FF1600 Cup.

In 1988, Eddie participated in the British Formula 3 Championship at the wheel of an Ralt-Alfa Romeo for the West Surrey
Racing team, grabbing six second places and ending the season as fifth-ranked driver. At the end of the season, he entered the
Macao Grand Prix, establishing a new lap record, leading Jean Alesi during the first part of the race before going off the circuit.

In 1989, Eddie graduated to Formula 3000 International with Pacific Racing, but failed to do better than a third place during
the season. In 1990, he joined Eddie Jordan Racing and ranked third overall, with a victory at Hockenheim. At the end of the
season , he returned to Macao to join the Cerumo F 3000 team, racing in Japan for the next three years. He was to win one
race in each of the seasons to end up seventh overall in 1991 and eighth in 1992.

In 1993, he was more successful, almost winning the Japanese F 3000 championships (accorded to Kauyoshi Hoshimo after a
controversial decision by the judges, which resulted in Eddie losing valuable points) and driving a Toyota factory car at Le
Mans, establishing a new lap record on the prestigious circuit. Despite technical problems, he managed to finish fourth in the
event.

The main event that year, however, was to be Eddie's successful trials with Eddie Jordan at the Estoril circuit in Portugal and
driving in the last two races of the season for Sasol Jordan, resulting in a tremendous sixth place at Suzuka, thus becoming the
first driver since Jean Alesi to mark points in his Formula 1 debut. In 1994, Eddie was hired as a full-fledged driver by Jordan.

In his first Grand Prix of the season, Eddie met with misfortune, suspended by the judges for a Grand Prix after a minor
accident. The team appealed, but the suspension was increased to three races. Eddie was forced to sit on the sidelines until the
Spanish Grand Prix , where he once again finished in the points at Barcelona with a remarkable sixth place. The second part of
the season was marked by several interrupted races. These disappointments were largely compensated by Eddies incredible
performance at Le Mans where, as part of a team with Krossnoff and Martini, the Toyota drivers managed to grab first place
at the beginning of the race, before slipping to fourth place following mechanical problems. During the 23rd hour, however,
Irvine attacked madly and managed to hoist the SARD Toyota team to second place at the end of the race.

Il fut nouveau dans les points, au volant de sa Formule 1, vers la fin de la saison: 4e au Grand Prix d'Europe, en septembre,
Irvine termina en 5e position la manche suivante, au Japon, se classant finalement 16e du Championnat du monde des
conducteurs.
