FORD AND SAUBER: A NEW PARTNERSHIP IN FORMULA ONE
-----------------------------------------------------------

The 1995 season will see the opening of a new chapter in
Ford's Formula One history as the world's second-largest
motor manufacturer joins forces with Peter Sauber's
Swiss-based Grand Prix team. As the company's officially
supported "works" team, Sauber will have sole use of the
new 3.0-litre Ford Zetec-R engine.

When Ford management set about selecting a new Formula One
partner, they took into consideration three key factors.
The most important of these was felt to be a "winning
spirit". The Sauber team fulfills this requirement
admirably, the company's illustrious history in sports car
racing culminating in a pair of outright victories at Le
Mans and consecutive World Sports Car Championship titles,
in 1989 and 1990.

Secondly, there was the question of facilities and
resources. Again, full marks go to Ford's new Formula One
partner. Sauber's headquarters, at Hinwil, near Zurich, are
the equal of anything available to the very top teams in
Formula One, while the organisation's technical department,
under the guidance of Technical Director, Andre de
Cortanze, and Chief Designer, Leo Ress, already posseses
the in-house knowledge and expertise necessary to field
frontnmning Grand Prix cars.

Finally, there was the issue of progress. Formula One is at
the technical pinnacle of motorsport and no team can expect
to enter ahd be instantly competitive. Initially, it is
necessary to learn from the involvement and then turn the
lessons into progress up the grid. It is a measure of
Sauber's capabilities that it can be easily forgotten the
team has only competed in Grand Prix racing for two
seasons. That's less than any other World Constructors'
Championship points-scorer in 1994.

In addition, Sauber has already established itself at the
front of the "chasing pack" in Formula One, underlining the
fact that it is a team of exceptional potential. In the
last three races of the 1994 season, for instance, lead
driver, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, put his Sauber on the second
row of the grid twice.

Historically, it is worth noting that Peter Sauber's early
sports cars, including the original C1, as well as the C2,
C3, C4 and C6 models, were all powered by Ford engines. The
1995 Formula One car, the Sauber-Ford C14, is currently
under construction at Hinwil and is scheduled for its first
run in February.

"We could not be more pleased with our new relationship
with Sauber,' comments Peter Gillitzer, Ford's Director of
Motorsport Strategy and Formula One Operations. "Even at
this early stage, we believe it is the start of something
special.

"At the same time, we know and understand the value of
long-term relationships - at this level of motorsport, you
don't become a success ovemight. In 1994, Ford achieved its
goal of winning the World Championship. Our next goal is to
do it again and add to the unrivalled 13 titles we've
already captured. We're certain that with our partners,
Sauber and Cosworth, we can accomplish just that."
