SBOS Sound Blaster(tm) Emulation for UltraSound MAX v0.21
---------------------------------------------------------

This Zip file contains the following files:

SBOSON.BAT - RUN this to get SBOS Emulations
SBOSOFF.BAT - RUN this to turn off Emultaions and to unload the
			 driver from memory
     DRIVER.EXE - SBOS driver
LOADER.EXE - required by the SBOS driver
SBOS512.SBS - Sound Library for SBOS to use with 512K bytes
			 of GUS memory
SBOS1024.SBS - Sound Library for SBOS to use with 1012K bytes
			 of GUS memory

Installations:
--------------
Simply unzip and the files into an empty directory. For example:

     C:\ULTRASND>md maxsbos <ENTER>
     C:\ULTRASND>cd maxsbos <ENTER>
     C:\ULTRASND\MAXSBOS>pkunzip a:\maxsbos.zip . <ENTER>

Using SBOS
----------
Simply type SBOSON in the directory where you have put the files before
you run the game, and choose Sound Blaster(tm) in the games that you want to
play.

What's the difference?
----------------------
Just run it and you can immediately hear the difference! Now the SBOS
make use of all the memory you have on board (512K and 1024K) to improve
sound quality.

Note that you will no longer hear "SBOS installed" when the driver
is loaded successfully.

Comments on this version of MaxSBOS
-----------------------------------

1) We have identified a very subtle defect in Rational's DOS4GW
DOS extender and are working with them to get it fixed. The current
version of MaxSBOS has a workaround for this problem. Examples of
   symptoms that it fixes are:

		Severe slowdowns.
Doom, Doom2, Raptor, Rise of the Robots
			ShadowCaster.
		No Sound.
			Theme Park
			Magic Carpet
		Dies.
			Cyberia
			Warcraft
			Menzoberranzan
			Dark Forces
		Flakey.
			Relentless
			Ravenloft

2) Games with some versions of HMI (SOS) sound drivers have problems
when using them with MaxSBOS. The HMI drivers corrupt the IRQ7
vector and if SBOS is using that one for the synth (for example,
ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,5), it will NOT work. If you flip the IRQS and
have the synth IRQ be 5 (ULTRASND=220,1,1,5,7) then it will work
OK. Magic Carpet has this problem. You can use upper IRQs for it
also. We are working with HMI on this problem.

3) Noctropolis. This game uses a DOS extender that requires the use of
the /C option in the loader, e.g., by typing SBOSON /C. Other
games that use this extender include EarthSiege and Harpoon2. Such
games can be detected by scanning the executable for the string:

We are currently investigating ways of eliminating the need for
the /C switch in future versions.

4) One remaining problem is the Dark Forces demo. The digital audio can
be heard if the /c option is used, but the music is not of very good
quality and it may be better to just turn it off.

5) Although this version of SBOS requires an UltraSound Max for the
digital audio, we will release versions of it in the future that
     support all UltraSounds.
