I have just uploaded a beta test version of CD_GRAB.EXE to cdrom.com
This is a handy little utility that performs the following functions:

report MSCDEX version & no. of drives installed
    report drive/driver capabilities
show contents of raw CD i.e. track no., length, type etc.
show contents of ISO 9660/High Sierra header (if CD-ROM)
    close/eject/lock/unlock door
    play audio track
play audio section & optionally repeat
watch audio position & mark time (for later playback of particular section)
read sectors direct from CD to a file
read tracks direct from CD to file/files

This is a FREE bit of software, and may be distributed at your discretion.

There is a PRO version avaliable which has the following additional features:

read DA (Digital Audio) sectors in RAW format
read DA sectors to a SoundBlaster VOICE (.VOC) file
read DA sectors to a Microsoft WAVE (.WAV) file

There will be a charge for these features, as we feel that the only people
who would be interested in them are professionals who are going to use them
as tools in their work. They were also the most difficult and expensive to
implement, and there is a lot of scope for additional development in this
area, which obviously has to be paid for... If you are interested in the PRO
version, please e-mail me for further details.

Please let me know of any problems/suggestions with the Beta version...

Have fun!

cheers,

gosh, this is novel! i'm replying to one of my own postings...

i got a whole heap of mail asking more or less the same question - i think,
therefore, that this would be a FAQ:

Q: Will your proggy work with my hardware setup?

    A: I don't know!

BUT: If you download the utility (from cdrom.com - it should be in /cdrom
by now...) and run the command 'CDGRAB d' you will get some output
         like this:

            Drive: F:
            Device Handle: MSCD001
            Device Type: CHARACTER
            IOCTL Support: SUPPORTED
            Output 'till Busy: NOT SET
            OPEN/CLOSE/RM: SUPPORTED
            Dev is CLOCK: NOT SET
            Dev is NUL: NOT SET
            Dev is STO: NOT SET
            Dev is STI: NOT SET
Door Status: CLOSED & UNLOCKED (DISC IN DRIVE)
            Read Support: COOKED & RAW
            Write Support: WRITE NOT ALLOWED
            Audio/Video Support: DATA READ & PLAY AUDIO/VIDEO
            Interleaving: SUPPORTED
            Prefetching: SUPPORTED
            Audio Manipulation: SUPPORTED
            Addressing: HSG & REDBOOK
            R-W Sub Channels: NOT SUPPORTED

if your 'Read Support' line looks like this:

            Read Support: COOKED & RAW

i.e. it says 'COOKED & RAW' and not 'COOKED ONLY' then it should
support reading of DA as well as ROM. if it says 'COOKED ONLY' then
it will support reading ROM only.

to all those who requested more info: please do the above and contact me again
with the output from your setup.

cheers,
