Introduction

When a person starts programming as an interesting hobby, one is usually told to start with simple programming excersises, such as a calculator or a notepad. That's stupid I tell you. One ought to start one's programming hobby with something bigger, like a 3d-game. Well, that's my opinion anyway, and this game is one of the results of this policy. I sincerely hope that you have as fun playing The Forge as I had creating it.

The Forge is a game that doesn't quite fall into any category. Basically the point of the game is to manage your gladiator from crummy division three to the final point of winning the famed division one. Each won fight earns you money to better equip your gladiator to fight even bigger foes.

Installing & Requirements

Installing The Forge is quite simple, simply unzip the files to their own folder and run Forge.exe. At this point you will usually find if the game actually works on your system. By default The Forge is set to 1024*768 screen mode so if the game doesn't run try setting the first number in the file cfg.cfg to 1.

To work The Forge requires that you have a direct3d compatible 3d-accelerator as your primary display driver and that you have installed Directx 7 on a Windows 9x. The Forge was developed with a 300 Celeron so that's propably the minimun processor requirement.

Playing

You will find playing The Forge quite straightforward. Perhaps the most difficulties will be in swordfighting where you have to use the keyboard to move around and the mouse to swing your sword. It is also possible to adjust the camera by pressing: home, end, delete or page down.

FAQ

-The screen with the smith and all looks like mosaic. Or lego blocks. You get it.

This is due to some graphics adapters not accepting big textures. The menu screen uses a texture size 640*480 so if your adapter can't handle that, the texture is downsized.
-Ain't there no cheat codes?
Nope. None whatsoever. But there are quite a few other cheats available that I have found. Ain't gonna reveal them. You got to find them yourself.
-So you are not going to support any other operating systems then?
I would if I could but I just haven't got the time for that.

Credits & Contacting

Well, most credits go to me, Ville Mönkkönen. Sounds were made by Ari Mönkkönen. Thanks to Olli Ryytty for "few" ideas on the gladiators. Also Matti Tuomainen and Mikko Mönkkönen for beta-testing. Teemu ain't got a computer now so I ain't gonna thank him this time.
